KODAK SHIPS COLORSENSE COLOR MANAGER SOFTWARE FOR THE MACINTOSH COMPUTER

Simplifies Color Management for Desktop Presentation, Publishing and
Design

January 6, 1993 -- SAN FRANCISCO -- Eastman Kodak Company, the pioneer in
color science, today announced the immediate availability of the Kodak
ColorSense color manager, which includes hardware and software for
Macintosh computer systems. ColorSense color manager provides a growing
segment within the desktop market--graphic designers and business
professionals working with color a simple, affordable way to print
consistent and pleasing color hard copies. ColorSense color manager is
also compatible with Apple ColorSync software.

Working with color on the desktop has traditionally been difficult,
time-consuming, inaccurate and expensive. ColorSense color manager
simplifies the process--providing consistent color results for
newsletters, presentations, design compositions and Photo CD images.
ColorSense color manager features a powerful, yet intuitive user interface
that applies Kodak's color expertise to the process of desktop color
management. It supports the widest range of scanners, displays and
printers, allowing consumers to leverage their investment in desktop
hardware and tools for color work without being locked into a single
vendor solution. In addition, it can be used with all major software
applications.

"The allure of desktop color has created strong demand from graphic
designer and business professionals alike for a reliable, easy-to-use
color management system," said Dick Lorbach, vice president and general
manager of Kodak's Digital Pictorial Hard Copy and Printer Products
Division. "ColorSense color manager eliminates the frustration and
complexity of working with color on the desktop by providing an
easy-to-use, cost-effective package that produces great results."

ColorSense color manager also includes a monitor calibration package that
supports the leading monitors, including displays from Apple, NEC, Radius,
RasterOps, Sony and SuperMac. The highly accurate monitor calibrator
measures the color response of the monitor to ensure color fidelity and
consistent color accuracy over time. A highly accurate target,
manufactured in Rochester, N.Y., is also included to measure and account
for individual scanner variations.

Wide Compatibility

Apple designed ColorSync software to work with products like ColorSense
color manager for customers needing advanced color management. Available
in the next release of System 7 Apple's ColorSync software architecture is
a system-level set of extensions to QuickDraw, that provides base-level
color management to third-party color management systems and peripherals.
ColorSync software provides the "hooks" for users to plug into the
different resources and devices they require to produce professional color
work on the desktop.

"We felt it was critical to provide an open color management architecture
in our operating system so that companies like Kodak who specialize in
color could develop value-added products like ColorSense color manager
that address the needs of color professionals," said Michael Hopwood,
ColorSync software product manager for Apple.

ColorSense color manager is compatible with the most widely-used input,
display and output products from vendors such as Apple, Canon,
Hewlett-Packard, Kodak, Microtek, Radius, RasterOps, Sharp, Sony, and
Tektronix.

Photo CD Support

In addition to supporting RGB, TIFF and PICT2 files, ColorSense color
manager also color manages Kodak's Photo CD images. ColorSense color
manager reads and displays Photo CD images directly from the disk. It
color corrects Photo CD images at any of the five Photo CD resolutions and
supports simple correction capabilities such as rotate and mirror.

ColorSense Color Manager Core Technologies

ColorSense color manager incorporates two core technologies a color
matching method (CMM) and an extensive set of device color profiles. The
color matching method translates color data using profiles of different
devices to a standard color space. The color matching method efficiently
transforms the data using the appropriate profiles to ensure that the
color displayed on the monitor can be printed accurately. Device color
profiles, commonly referred to as DCPs, are the specifications that
describe how different input, display and output devices interpret color.
ColorSense color manager incorporates a library of highly accurate DCPs
that characterize the gamut of colors each device can produce and how that
color is achieved. ColorSense Color Manager Key Features

* Monitor calibrator and software: Software and hardware specifically
designed to compensate for and correct individual monitor variations.

* User interface: An intuitive, graphical-user interface that makes it easy
for users to view and modify multiple images, save a color correction in a
file or adjust the color, brightness or contrast of the display.

* Print simulation: To predict how actual printed color will look, users
can simulate on the monitor how an image will appear when printed to a
particular device. Users can make changes to the image or display multiple
simulations to ensure that the hard copy print is the exact color image
desired.

* Scanner calibration software: Software and highly accurate target
specifically designed to compensate for and correct individual scanner
variations.

* System extension: A component that allows simulation of printed output in
all applications, and color correct printing in applications that use
QuickDraw software to print, including Microsoft PowerPoint and Aldus
Persuasion software.

* Preferred viewing conditions: Software to change the color temperature
and gamma of the monitor to offer a variety of viewing conditions such as
daylight (D5000).

Environmentally Safe Packaging

The ColorSense package was designed with the environment in mind, using
minimal materials which are entirely recyclable.

Pricing Availability and System Requirements

ColorSense color manager features a list price $499. It will be available
through major distributors and dealers such as Merisel and Ingram Micro.
ColorSense color manager runs on any Macintosh 11, LC, LCII, SE/30 or
Macintosh Quadra computer running System 7 or greater. It requires an 8-
to 24-bit color monitor and a supports three or four-color, color
printer.

In addition to its traditional film, chemical and health business, Kodak is
a major manufacturer and marketer of imaging products, systems and
services for business and government uses. Kodak products include
scanning, image storage, software and printing devices for a range of
document and color imaging applications.
