Apple Brings Color Printing Technology to Macintosh Users

SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 6, 1993 -- Apple Computer, Inc. today
introduced the Apple Color Printer, a large format color printer that
brings ease of use, high-quality color output, and versatile
paper-handling to Macintosh computer users who want to use color in
everyday documents and presentations.

"With our first color printer, we've focused on giving mainstream Macintosh
users a good, solid printer that will handle almost any type of report,
presentation, or business document," said John Moon, Apple's vice
president of Imaging Products. "The Apple Color Printer makes it simple
for anyone to use color in everyday documents. And, it's an important step
in our long-term color imaging strategy, which is to make the use of color
easy and routine for all users."

Ease of Use

From its one-button installation to its no-mess ink cartridges, the Apple
Color Printer is designed for ease of use. Like all of Apple's printers,
the Apple Color Printer features a one-click installation, making it
simple to set up. It's also easy to share with other users because it
ships with Apple's new GrayShare printer software. GrayShare allows users
to share any QuickDraw-based printer, like the Apple Color Printer, over a
network. The printer also takes advantage of ColorSync's color matching
capabilities, which ensures that users get color output that closely
matches the colors created on the computer's display. Another feature that
contributes to the printer's ease of use is its no-mess ink cartridges.
Four self-contained ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) are
easy to change without the mess typically associated with color printers.
The printer also features a self-cleaning printhead that senses
automatically when the ink jets need to be cleaned, and does so without
user intervention, ensuring high quality output at all times.

High Quality Color

The Apple Color Printer achieves high-quality color output through the
combined benefits of its proprietary GrayShare and ColorSync software. The
GrayShare printer software gives the printer the ability to render fine
shading of colors, giving images a more realistic and detailed look.
ColorSync ensures accurate color matching so that colors users see on the
display are reproduced on the printer, or the closest possible
approximation. In addition to reproducing exceptional color, the printer
also achieves high-quality blacks--something that is difficult to do in
mainstream color printers. The printer is based on Canon's BJ820C engine
and produces output at 360 dots per inch (dpi) and 65 screen lines per
inch--over 40 percent greater resolution than 300 dpi printers in its
class. The printer also ships with Apple's full library of TrueType fonts
-- 64 fonts in all--giving the Apple Color Printer one of the largest and
broadest offerings of any mainstream color printer.

Versatile Paper Handling

One of the most versatile color printers in terms of paper handling, the
Apple Color Printer supports tabloid size (11x17, A3) -- especially
important for customers such as engineering professionals who need to
print large drawings--as well as letter, A4, and legal size formats for
general purpose use in the United States or international markets. A
single paper tray holds all of the different sizes, eliminating the time
and expense of handling multiple paper trays. And because it prints to
transparencies, the Apple Color Printer is also an ideal solution for
mainstream business users who want to produce color presentations straight
from the desktop.

Special paper is not required with the Apple Color Printer, however Apple
recommends it when printing "best" quality documents. Plain bond paper is
acceptable for many everyday documents incorporating images and
non-overlapping solid color areas.

The Apple Color Printer takes advantage of ColorSync, Apple's color
matching software, and complements the capabilities of Apple's new Color
OneScanner Together, these products provide mainstream business and
education customers with a complete color solution--from getting sharp
color images into the computer to printing them out in vivid color.

System Requirements, Pricing and Availability

The Apple Color Printer is compatible with any color-capable Macintosh
system running System 7. For best performance, Apple recommends 4
megabytes (MB) of RAM or greater on the CPU. The Apple Color Printer will
be available worldwide immediately. Its U.S. suggested retail price is
$2,349. Pricing may vary outside the United States.
