O'REILLY & ASSOCIATES AND BANTAM BOOKS ANNOUNCE UNIX POWER TOOLS JOINT
VENTURE

SEBASTOPOL, CA -- December 14, 1992 -- Tim O'Reilly, publisher of O'Reilly
& Associates, and Kenzi Sugihara, vice president and publisher of Bantam
Electronic Publishing, today announced that their companies would jointly
publish UNIX POWER TOOLS (March 1992/1100 pages/one CD-ROM
disk/$59.95/ISBN 0-553-35402-7). This book/software package for power
users of the UNIX computer operating system is the first joint venture
between these respected trade and professional publishers. Authored by
Jerry Peek, Tim O'Reilly, and Mike Loukides, with contributions from many
others, the book is slated for a March release.

This co-publishing arrangement draws upon each company's respective
strengths. O'Reilly & Associates, the leading publisher of books for the
UNIX system, created the book and will be responsible for direct sales to
consumers and corporate bundling. Bantam Computer Books, well known for
its Power Tools series with over 800,000 copies of DOS POWER TOOLS and
over 150,000 copies of WINDOWS POWER TOOLS in print, will be responsible
for sales through wholesalers and retailers, and internationally. The two
companies will cooperate on marketing.

UNIX POWER TOOLS collects the advice of UNIX experts, culled from
O'Reilly's best-selling Nutshell Handbooks on UNIX, from Usenet, and from
contributors such as Jerry Peek, Tim O'Reilly, Mike Loukides, Chris Torek,
Dale Dougherty, Bruce Barnett, Jonathan Kamens, Larry Wall, Gene Spafford,
Simson Garfinkel, Linda Mui, and others. The book is written in a unique
"browser's format," which enables users to start anywhere, and jump around
to find thousands of tips, scripts, and techniques for using UNIX more
effectively.

The Power Tools' CD-ROM disk provides powerful public domain programs that
add even more flexibility to the standard UNIX command set. Every script
and program from the book is on the disk, so users can add it right to
their own set of Power Tools. Included are power utilities like Perl, Gnu
Emacs, bash and gawk, and many other public domain programs, such as an
interactive spelling checker, a simple-but-powerful spreadsheet, and a
version of grep that catches things that are only "approximately" right.
All programs are available not only in source form, but also
pre-compiled.

"As O'Reilly & Associates began our rapid ascent into the computer
publishing scene, we were approached by many companies who wanted to do
joint ventures of various kinds," said Tim O'Reilly. "We were excited by
Bantam's suggestion that we do something as part of their Power Tools
series because of the great success those books have experienced in the
trade market. And, frankly, it seemed like a fun book to do.

"One of the hallmarks of the Bantam Power Tools series is the companion
disk containing software," said O'Reilly. "Doing this for UNIX is quite a
challenge because there is no universal computer architecture of
distribution format. We solved the problem using CD-ROM. The huge storage
capacity lets us include not just program source code but pre-compiled
binaries for all of the most common UNIX platforms. All the user has to do
is install the version that matches the system being used."

"In many ways," said Ron Petrusha, Bantam Electronic Publishing's editorial
director and editor of UNIX POWER TOOLS, "we see this publishing
relationship as a natural outgrowth of our joint commitment to high
quality computer books, of O'Reilly & Associates' vast expertise in the
UNIX system, and of Bantam's experience with the book/disk as a publishing
medium.

"In UNIX POWER TOOLS, I think that we have successfully combined our
talents to produce a work that is unlike any other computer book that I've
ever seen. UNIX POWER TOOLS will definitely be an instant classic of UNIX
publishing."
