Apple Unveils Color Scanner and New Ofoto 2.0 Image Capture Software

SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 6, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today
introduced an easy-to-use, 24-bit color scanner designed and priced to
appeal to mainstream Macintosh users. The Apple Color OneScanner offers
innovative, easy-to-use software, as well as advanced, custom hardware for
simple one-button operation and professional quality color imaging. It
carries a U.S. suggested retail price of $1,349.

"Until recently, color scanning has been the province of graphic artists
and high-end desktop publishers," said John Moon, Apple's vice president
of Imaging Products. "But with the Color OneScanner, Macintosh users can
easily incorporate color images into their documents. The Color OneScanner
is one of the first steps in fulfilling our goal to offer color solutions
throughout our product line."

Developed in conjunction with Light Source, Inc. of Greenbrae, Calif.,
Ofoto 2.0 image-capture software brings quality and simplicity to color
scanning. The Autoscan feature allows all aspects of the scanning
operation to be completed with the push of a single button--from setting
brightness and contrast, and straightening and cropping images, to
adjusting images for the printer or output device being used. Ofoto's
Autoscan feature removes the complexities of scanning while ensuring
high-quality images, and it frees users from the frustrations experienced
with many other scanning applications. Ofoto's flexibility also allows
more experienced OneScanner users to manually control the scanning process
to achieve special effects and other individual variations.

Ofoto 2.0 both improves upon the features of earlier versions of the
scanner software and brings new capabilities to scanning. Some of the new
features include the following:

Highlight/shadow control measures the darkest and lightest point in an
image, providing a wide range of shades in between for more detailed
images.

Color cast correction adds or removes a color from an image. This feature
is typically used to remove a "cast" from a photo such as an orange tone
caused by poor lighting conditions, or a blue haze caused by fog, smog or
cloudy conditions.

Printer specific sharpening compensates for the blurring of a printer image
because of ink spreading on the paper. Ofoto software automatically
adjusts for this.

Image focusing "sharpens" pictures that are slightly out of focus.

Background processing lets the user work in other applications while Ofoto
scans and processes the image in the background.

"We've teamed with Apple to build a product that does the best possible job
reproducing color and grayscale photographs and line art, from scan to
print," said Michael Solomon, Light Source president. "We expect to enable
a whole new set of users with the ability to create image-rich documents
that will have the same striking visual impact on the business world as
did the original desktop published documents."

Every aspect of the Color OneScanner's hardware was designed to ensure
precision color imaging that is rivaled only by high-end, high-priced
color scanners. The OneScanner's more notable features include a
custom-designed lens that provides sharpness not only in the middle of the
scanning bed but also at the edges; a color-correcting application
specific integrated circuit (ASIC), which adjusts data on the fly to
produce more vibrant and accurate colors; motors designed to minimize
mechanical vibration and specially designed color sensors, which enable
more precise scans and color registration for sharper and clearer images;
and single-pass scanning that lets the user see the image as it's being
scanned.

Also included with the Color OneScanner is Apple's ColorSync color matching
software. ColorSync works in conjunction with the scanner and Ofoto
software to improve color fidelity and consistency from scanner to
computer screen to printer. ColorSync helps Color OneScanner users achieve
"what you see is what you get" color (or the closest approximation), which
even more sophisticated scanners on the market rarely offer.

The Color OneScanner is compatible with a wide variety of optical character
recognition (OCR) software applications. Caere Corporation's OmniPage
Professional and Direct programs use Caere's AnyPage technology to enhance
the optical character recognition capabilities of the OneScanner. For more
information call Caere Corporation at 800-535-SCAN. Graphics can be
scanned directly into Adobe Photoshop using the ScanTastic ps plug-in from
Second Glance The ScanTastic ps plug-in is available for $99 by calling
Second Glance at 714-855-2331.

The Color OneScanner has a suggested retail price in the United States of
$1,349 and will be available in February 1993. Pricing and availability
will vary outside the United States.
