NEC INTRODUCES THE ULTRALITE AUTOGRAPH
An i486SL Pen Tablet Computer for the Mobile Worker NEC

(Boxborough, Mass., November 9, 1992)--NEC Technologies, Inc. redefines the
standard for pen computing platforms with its introduction of the
feature-rich UltraLite Autograph pen tablet. In a small, lightweight form
factor, the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet packs the equivalent power of a
mainstream notebook computer and offers exceptional computing capability
in environments where traditional notebooks cannot be used.

"The first generation of pen computers have been viewed almost exclusively
as data collection devices because of their limited feature sets. This has
seriously hindered overall market acceptance of pen computers until now,"
said Bob Levin, director of marketing, for NEC Technologies' Portable
Systems Group. "We have designed the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet
without compromising portability; packing in equivalent features of
leading edge notebook computers that make the UltraLite Autograph pen
tablet a true business productivity tool for mobile professionals."

Uncompromising Design

Designed to provide uncompromising performance for even the most demanding
field-based applications, the 3.89 pound UltraLite Autograph pen tablet
uses the new notebook processor of choice -- the i486SL introduced today
by Intel Corporation. Offering twice the computing performance at half the
power consumption of the equivalent 386SL systems, the 3.3 volt i486SL
offers users the ultimate in value-based performance while running at
20MHz. The UltraLite Autograph pen tablet offers 4MB RAM (expandable to
12MB), a 40MB HDD, a 9.4" transflective display for clear viewing indoors
or outdoors, a full complement of ports including an Enhanced Parallel
Port and an external VGA CRT port capable of displaying simultaneous
video. In addition, the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet provides two PCMCIA
type II slots for easy user configuration of industry standard I/O
peripherals such as fax modems, local area network cards, flash memory
cards and wireless communication devices.

Dual Functionality

Running either Windows for Pen Computing by Microsoft Corporation or
PenPoint by GO Corporation, the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet offers
users versatility with its optional 83-key portable keyboard and Notebook
Carrying Case. When used as a general purpose productivity tool, the
UltraLite Autograph pen tablet can reside in its Notebook Carrying Case
(which holds both the keyboard and the tablet in notebook style). By using
its built-in hinge, the UltraLite Autograph Notebook Carrying Case is
capable of supporting the display at a comfortable viewing angle, allowing
for stationary input of general purpose applications such as word
processing and communications, similar to the way today's more traditional
notebook computers are used.

"We've spent the last couple of years listening to customers who have
either implemented or who are actively considering a pen-based
application," said Renee Bader, strategic marketing manager, responsible
for NEC Technologies pen-based products. "Based on their input, NEC has
designed the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet to meet not only very specific
mobile pen computing needs, but we have also empowered the UltraLite
Autograph pen tablet to be a true, general purpose business productivity
tool."

Innovation

The Autograph sports an impressive list of technology innovations:

-Local Bus

Video NEC has implemented the first local bus video on a portable platform
to date. Users should expect to experience anywhere from 50 to 100 percent
improvement on video performance with this added feature.

-PCMCIA Type II Slots

With the most aggressive implementation of PCMCIA slots by a systems
manufacturer to date, users may install peripherals offered by NEC or
third party developers as easily as they load a floppy disk into their
portable computers. This includes the addition and removal of peripherals
while the system is on and booted in the Windows operating environment.

-HotZone Icons

Similar in concept to keyboard function keys, NEC has innovated
programmable HotZone icons that allow quick, easy access to frequently
used functions. By simply tapping the active HotZone icons with the pen, a
user can access various pre-defined functions such as: access to the
system setup menu, turn the backlight on and off, reverse the video, as
well as several other common items. The programmable HotZone icons allow
VARs, ISVs and corporate developers to integrate more commonly used
functions into their software applications.

-Low Power Design

As one of the first implementations of 3.3 volt processor technology, NEC
has integrated the 3.3 volt design technology throughout the UltraLite
Autograph pen tablet, giving users significant improvements on battery
life independent of usage. Combined with NEC's aggressive implementation
of Advanced Power Management, the Autograph may last from 3 to 5 hours on
the standard NiMH battery pack. If this is not sufficient, the user may
opt to use the double capacity battery pack that adds approximately 1/2
pound and doubles the expected battery life up to 6 to 10 hours. The
combined features with these technologies will help elevate the UltraLite
Autograph pen tablet to the new standard for pen computing platforms.

UltraLite Autograph Pen Tablet Applications

The UltraLite Autograph pen tablet is ideal for mission-critical
applications where there is an overwhelming need to automate mobile
processes ranging from data collection to signature capture.

Industries that can immediately benefit from the versatility, mobility and
connectivity of the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet include: Medical
applications, ranging from patient chart automation to remote patient
monitoring; Insurance applications where the UltraLite Autograph pen
tablet can be used by adjusters for real-time, on-site repair cost
estimation or agents conducting one-on-one situational analysis with
prospective clients; Pharmaceutical applications, for logging a
physician's signature prior to dropping off a drug sample; Consumer
Packaged Goods applications, for collection of real-time inventory
information at the store fronts, creation of memos and business letters.

All of these industries have an immediate need for pen capabilities. but
yet also have a very real need for a business productivity tool. The
UltraLite Autograph pen tablet offers both by allowing for collection of
customer call reporting, managing contacts and personal information and
communication back to the home office.

Configuration

Scheduled to ship in January, the UltraLite Autograph pen tablet with
Windows for Pen Computing, a 40MB HDD, 4MB RAM and an external 31/2"
floppy disk drive has a suggested retail price of $3,999. The UltraLite
Autograph pen tablet with the same configuration (excluding WFPC), but
with PenPoint 1.01, has a suggested retail price of $4,099. The Autograph
is available through NEC's nationwide network of authorized dealers.
