Multi-Tech Introduces the 386SX-based MultiModemLAN with Remote-Control and
Fax Capabilities

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA-- October 13, 1992 -- Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a
leading manufacturer of data communications equipment headquartered in
Mounds View, Minnesota, announces that the MultiModemLAN (model MT1432ECT)
networking modem now includes a 386SX processor and is equipped with both
10BASE2 (Thinnet) and 10BASET (twisted pair) Ethernet connectors. This new
model of the company's popular MultiModemLAN attaches directly to Novel
IPX/SPX LANs, and includes all software necessary for dial-in and dial-out
operations. The MT1432ECT features both a CCITT V.32bis/V.32 (14.4K & 9600
bps) data modem and a Group 3 (9600/4800 bps) fax modem. It is bundled
with MultiExpress data communications software and MultiExpressFax fax
software. A second modem can be attached to the MT1432ECT for simultaneous
dial-in and dial-out operations. It will be available for shipment in
December of 1992, priced at $1995.00.

"With the increasing need for remote access to LAN data involving
compute-intensive applications, comes the need for a more powerful
application processor," states Raghu Sharma, President of MultiTech
Systems, Inc. "The MultiModemLAN answers that need. With its V.32bis
modem, 386SX processor, and up to 16 megabytes of memory, the
MultiModemLAN can connect directly to an Ethernet-based Novell LAN. Once
connected, it provides the remotely-controlled application processing
required by compute-intensive sessions like those involving graphics
programs. When the MultiModemLAN is not being used as a remote-control
host, it can be shared by LAN users for fax or data communications. By
bundling MultiExpress datacomm software and MultiExpress Fax Server
software, we're offering a product that connects directly to an Ethernet
network and operates as a complete data, fax, and remote-control
communications system within one small cabinet."

With the MultiModemLAN package, a PC on the LAN can run a terminal
emulation and use the MultiModemLAN to exchange files or send/receive
faxes with a remote location. If you can dedicate a PC as a fax server,
the MultiExpress Fax Server software will queue incoming and outgoing
faxes. The outgoing faxes will be held until the MultiModemLAN presents an
available modem. Incoming faxes are queued to a directory designated by
the system administrator. Traveling employees can remotely control the
MultiModemLAN to access or modify files on the network. With an optional
external modem attached to the MultiModemLAN, any two of the above
sessions could occur simultaneously. The remote-control operations can
utilize the on-board 386SX processor as the host applications processor or
they can be hosted by a LAN PC with the proper arrangements. This means
you don't have to dedicate another workstation PC or Single Board Computer
(SBC) for the process, but if the remote user will want to access
information or applications that reside on a LAN PC's hard drive, his LAN
PC can be set up to receive the remote-control call in lieu of the
MultiModemLAN's 386SX.

The MultiModemLAN hardware consists of a 386-based PC that comes with 2
megabytes of memory expandable to 16 using standard 4 Meg SIMMs, a
V.32bis/V.42.bis modem with an on-board fax modem, and Ethernet Network
Interface electronics that supports either twisted pair or Thinnet
interfaces. It provides a standard RJ11 jack to connect the internal modem
to the phone line, a RJ45 connector and a BNC connector for twisted pair
and thin coax connections, respectively, a 9-pin D-style connector to
attach an external modem or DSU to the internal PC, a power switch and a
DIN jack for power. It also provides internal connections for a keyboard
and VGA monitor by removing the cover.

When the MultiModemLAN is powered up, its pre-configured files are booted;
namely, the operating system, Novell's Internet Packet Exchange (IPX),
Netx (the NetWare shell for the appropriate version of DOS on the PC), and
the background modem-sharing software. Once these programs have been run,
MultiExpress will automatically be loaded onto the internal PC to support
a dial-in remote-control session via the on-board modem and PC. It is
configured to wait for a connection, but does not require the reservation
of a modem to do so. While it is waiting for the remote-control call,
other datacomm, fax, or remote-control sessions may be initiated by LAN
PCs.
