INTRODUCTION OF MAXELL FLOPTICAL DISK MOVES FLOPTICAL TECHNOLOGY CLOSER TO
INDUSTRY STANDARDIZATION

Major Media Supplier Introduces Quantities Of Very High Capacity
21-Megabyte Floptical Disk To End Users Through Worldwide Distributors

Cupertino, CA -- November 16, 1992 -- The Floptical Technology Association
today announced the mass market availability in December of the
21-megabyte 3.5-inch Floptical disk manufactured by FTA member Maxell
Corp. of America, Fairlawn, New Jersey. Maxell is a major supplier of
magnetic media, and availability of their branded Floptical disks
worldwide gives Floptical technology the lead in the race toward industry
standardization for very high capacity storage.

The new 3.5-inch BaFe Floptical disks include all the features of Maxell's
advanced binder technology, which is designed to enhance reliable
operation even under high-density writing and recording. The Floptical
disk is capable of storing over 14 times more data than a 1.44MB disk and
28 times more than a 720KB disk.

Designed for use in 3.5-inch Floptical disk drives manufactured by Insite
Peripherals and Iomega Corp., the Floptical disk is available next month
from all authorized Maxell distributors for a suggested list price of
$31.50 each, or $63.00 for a two-pack.

"Floptical technology meets the high capacity needs of end users, providing
a more convenient medium for storage of large data files, better value per
megabyte and higher reliability than conventional floppies," said Dave
Berry, manager of new product development for Maxell's Computer Products
division.

A spokesman for the Floptical Technology Association said, "The
availability to end users of quantities of Maxell's Floptical disks gives
Floptical technology a big lead in the race toward industry
standardization. Users are the big winners, with a true migration upward
from standard disks to great flexibility in applications, from I/O to
near-line storage and backup."

Features of Maxell's new BaFe (Barium Ferrite) Floptical disk include a
flex shutter which ensures ultra-smooth opening and closing without shell
wear to help maintain a virtually contamination-free environment; a
composite shell for optimum head contact; high-output, high-energy
magnetic particles to ensure perfect alignment; neo cross-linkage magnetic
layers for optimum stability and an improved disk surface for longer life.
In addition, the superior data storage capabilities of BaFe will
eventually enable the capacity of single disks to be increased up to 100MB
and beyond.
