Applied Engineering's DataLink PB - PowerBook Voice, Data and Fax Modem

Dallas, TX (October 21, 1992)-Applied Engineering announced today powerful
new technology for mobile computing, DataLink PB, a new internal
voice/data/fax solution for Apple Computer's PowerBook portable
computers.

When using Applied Engineering's new DataLink PB modem, the PowerBook is
transformed into a complete mobile personal communications system. The
DataLink PB modem couples the performance of high speed data and
send/receive FAX capability with two-way voice support, enabling users to
implement voice messaging on a portable machine for the first time.

The DataLink PB provides high speed throughput with data transmission
speeds of 14,400 bps, and with compression, effective user throughput can
reach 57,600 (v.42bis). These capabilities are ideal for the mobile user
dialing in to a network for remote access or downloading large files when
not in the office. DataLink PB includes free data communication software
and on-line time, plus membership to various services such as American
Online, CompuServe, GEnie and NewsNet.

The DataLink PB supports fax transmission up to 14,400 bps, the highest
speed on the PowerBook today, with auto fallback speeds at 9600 bps for
transmission to slower fax machines. The fax software is an improved
version of the FAXstf send and receive package. Optional Optical
Character Recognition (OCR) allows translation of fax messages to word
processor files. The software also supports group faxes, time delayed
faxes, custom cover pages, background faxing for both send and receive
and a fax log.

To round out the needs of the mobile computer user, the DataLink PB
introduces full voice capabilities to the PowerBook user with two-way
phone, speaker phone and digital answering machine. Applied Engineering's
powerful new CommPhone telephony software includes a fully featured phone
book with import/export and auto dial. CommPhone's digital answering
machine lets you digitize incoming messages and memos, time and date
stamp the message, access them directly or remotely and even change the
settings and message remotely - virtually everything available from
today's top of the line answering machines. In addition, multiple
outgoing messages can be recorded which are indexed by each Caller ID or
access code. Any number of messages can be dictated for selected
individuals. The user can put the PowerBook to sleep, and while
unattended CommPhone will answer calls, deliver individualized outgoing
messages and record new incoming messages. The CommPhone software is
designed to significantly enhance the productivity of the mobile user by
bringing true voice messaging automation to the portable computer.

Best of all, connect DataLink PB to a cellular phone via Applied
Engineering's new Axcell cellular phone interface and send voice, fax and
data across cellular channels. Axcell enables PowerBook users to connect
any PowerBook voice, data and/or fax modem to cellular phones from OKI,
NEC, AT&T and others. The PowerBook equipped with DataLink PB and Axcell
becomes a complete mobile personal communications station. The DataLink
PB's MNP-10 error correction protocol ensures that data gets there
reliably.

"We feel that our advancements in data, fax and voice messaging
technologies are vital to personal mobile users. Automation of voice, the
most frequently used telecommunication medium, is long overdue," states
Robert J. Carroll, CEO and President of Applied Engineering. "Combined
with the Axcell cellular interface, PowerBook users now have a completely
portable integrated solution for voice, data and fax communications at a
cost which compares favorably with other manufacturers' modems alone."

DataLink PB retails for $619 and the Axcell interface retails for $299.
The two products together have a special introductory price of $849.
These and other Applied Engineering products are available from Ingram,
Merisel, Tech Data and through AE's 2,800 dealers including mail order
and the CompUSA and Computer City super stores. Apple's warranty requires
that DataLink PB be installed by an authorized Apple dealer or by Applied
Engineering.
