HIGH SPEED, WINDOWS DISPLAY SYSTEM ANNOUNCED BY PIXELINK
Includes Gray Scale Graphics Controller From Number Nine To Run Windows 10X
Faster At 1600 X 1200 Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC, November 9, 1992 -- A new ultra-high resolution, gray scale
document display system that can run Microsoft Windows applications 10
times faster than current PC-based offerings was debuted at the Federal
Document Imaging Show here by Pixelink Corporation. Called the 120XDS, the
display system allows users to view two pages of a document, at 120 dpi,
and to double the size of on-screen images at the touch of a key, all
while enjoying dramatically accelerated windowing performance and a solid
76Hz CRT refresh rate.

A key component of Pixelink's 120XDS is a new graphics controller designed
and manufactured by Number Nine Computer Corporation. An on-board Texas
Instruments TMS 34020 graphics coprocessor and two ASICs (Application
Specific Integrated Circuits) enable the controller to take over the
graphics functions normally required by the PC. Performance of both
text-based and Graphics applications are improved by an average of 10
times, while the host CPU is off loaded for other tasks. In addition, the
controller runs cooler and uses less power because of reduced use of heat
producing and costly ICs.

While the 1600 X 1200 resolution provides more document "real estate" on
screen, a special HawkEye zoom feature enables the entire screen to be
magnified by 2x. Thus if users want to closely examine specific areas of a
document, they can zoom in at the touch of a key, then scroll and pan over
the magnified document with their mouse.

The complete Pixelink 120XDS system consists of a 20-inch, two-page gray
scale monitor operating at 120 dpi, a flicker-free 76Hz refresh rate; and
displaying 16 gray shades; the accelerated graphics controller with
Windows drivers; cabling, installation software and documentation. The
complete system is priced at $2695 and Pixelink will begin shipping in
December.

"This represents a major price/performance improvement for Windows-oriented
document display applications," noted Bill Ingraham, Marketing Director of
Pixelink. "Users can now view more on-screen details, in much less time,
for less cost than with current generation systems," he added.

In a separate announcement Pixelink also introduced a UNIX/X Windows
version of the 120XDS. Based on the same accelerated coprocessor
architecture, the UNIX version delivers up to 70,000 Xstones while
displaying 1600 X 1200 images, the industry's highest performance for
PC-based X Windowing systems.

About Graphics Coprocessors:

The acceleration claims offered by various document display systems may
seem confusing simply because all graphics accelerators are not created
equal. Their usefulness and performance depends upon the specifications of
the exact processor chip and its support circuitry; the size of the pixel
bus; the software supported; the on-screen resolution provided; and
whether the performance ratings are for color, gray scale or monochrome
monitors. For example: an accelerator designed to run Windows 10-fold
faster in black and white may seem fast. But in reality it is typically
slower and less useful than a system based on a discrete hardware
coprocessor that runs Windows, Unix/X Windows, TIGA, and other graphics
software 5 times faster in 16 shades of gray.

The intelligent graphics controller used in the 120XDS comes from an
impressive family tree based on the Texas Instruments TMS 34020 graphics
coprocessor. Designed and manufactured by Number Nine Computer
Corporation, it is a design cousin of the fastest full featured color
graphics adapter in the industry--the #9GXi, the largest selling graphics
controller in the industry last year (source: International Data
Corporation). The controller in the Pixelink 120XDS marks the first gray
scale implementation of the respected #9GXi design.
