VERDIX Establishes VERDIX Application Center for Network Security

Center Supports the Network Security Community with a Testbed, Research
Programs, and Information Resources

CHANTILLY, Virginia, October 29, 1992 -- VERDIX Corporation's Secure
Products Division announced today the opening of the VERDIX Applications
Center (VAC), a center for excellence, which provides a comprehensive
"hands-on" testbed facility, leadingedge research and development, and an
information resource center for the secure networking community.

"The center allows prospective users to validate the interoperability of
different vendor's secure products, interconnected with the VERDIX Secure
Local Area Network (VSLAN)," explains Ralph E. Alexander, President and
CEO of VERDIX Corporation. "Users will be able to see, learn, and measure
secure networking first hand."

The center's testbed, located at the new VERDIX Secure Products Division
headquarters in Chantilly, Virginia, uses a broad range of both secure and
non-secure computers, operating systems, and applications as network nodes
along with network environments such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft LAN
Manager. These capabilities allow analysts and guest users to simulate
their operating environments, perform interoperability studies,
performance analyses, tests of security policy options, and applications
demonstrations.

The opening of the VAC is part of VERDIX's launch of an expanded line of
products and services designed to add civilian government and selected
commercial markets to its current Department of Defense installed base.

The VSLAN technology, previously available in products evaluated for
classified information and defense applications, is now available in two
new products: VSLAN 11, a B1 LAN, for secure networks with sensitive and
proprietary information; and, VSIP, the VERDIX Secure IP router, for
interconnecting networks of different security levels.

This product line expansion allows civilian agencies and some commercial
users that process highly-sensitive public information or funds
transactions, to secure their LANs completely, without compromising
performance, ease-of-use, or their choice of computer hardware and
software.

"VERDIX is addressing a vital need of government and private sector
organizations that must protect classified, highly-sensitive, and
expensive information," says Alexander. "We consider this a remarkable
offering for those agencies and segments of the commercial marketplace who
have very serious security concerns, particularly those organizations that
are downsizing from mainframes to networks of desktop computers."

The center's testbed utilizes the resources of the VAC, which also provides
extensive support and testing services for its customers and space for
guest users and analysts. The networks, computers, and applications
software of the testbed are maintained by VERDIX staff and are available
to both in-house and external users.

The testbed's equipment is interconnected using several VSLAN and VSLAN II
networks, which are interconnected using the VSIP. Links outside of the
testbed are provided by a VERDIX Network Terminal Server (VNTS) interfaced
to the VSLAN, by an X.25 interface from the VSIP, and from the internet
via the VERDIX corporate computer system.

The VAC also maintains state-of-the-art expertise in secure networking.
Together with VAC affiliates, the center participates in internally-funded
and contract research to stay in the forefront of developments affecting
the deployment of secure networks into operational environments. In
addition, the VAC is a central resource for information relating to secure
networking and it offers a comprehensive library and a program of seminars
conducted by VERDIX staff and affiliates.

VERDIX Secure Products Division provides products and expert services for
planning and building secure networks for government and commercial users
with serious security requirements.
