SYBASE ANNOUNCES PRODUCT DIRECTIONS THROUGH 1993

New Server Products Are Designed For the Next Phase of Client/Server
Computing, as Outlined in Sybase's Enterprise Client/Server Roadmap

EMERYVILLE, CA, November 10, 1992 -- Sybase, Inc. today unveiled its
Enterprise Client/Server Roadmap, outlining its vision of the next phase
of client/server computing. A key piece of the Roadmap is SYBASEX System
10, the company's next generation of server products for building and
deploying global, enterprise-wide business applications. SYBASE System 10,
an integrated family of server software products, will be delivered to the
market in 1993.

SYBASE System 10 provides functionality that extends the SYBASE
architecture to address Enterprise Client/Server computing. According to
Sybase, Enterprise Client/Server is the next phase of client/server
computing. It represents the integration of departmental and corporate
Information Systems (IS), enabling a new class of applications that span
the enterprise and leverage existing central and "line of business"
systems.

Mark Hoffman, Sybase president and CEO, commented, "Many of our large
customers have started the transition to enterprise-wide client/server
computing. These corporations are working closely with us as they develop
their transition plans and begin to execute. Our next generation products
are designed to meet the needs of those customers. By unveiling SYBASE
System 10 now, we are providing product direction that will help people
plan to build and deploy client/server applications on a global scale not
possible before."

Sybase worked with design partners from both vendor and customer
communities to develop SYBASE System 10. As a result, it provides a new
class of capabilities, tested against real world requirements, to manage
the transition to a new architecture for enterprise-wide computing.

SYBASE System 10

SYBASE System 10 consists of a modular family of integrated products:
SYBASE SQL Server 10, SYBASE Navigation Server, SYBASE OmniSQL Gateway,
SYBASE Replication Server, and SYBASE Control Servers. These products are
designed to address the five critical areas of Enterprise Client/Server
computing: proven advanced technology, scalable high performance,
interoperability between applications, reliable distributed systems, and
operational control.

Stewart Schuster, Sybase vice president of marketing, commented, "We've
worked closely with our customers to prioritize the real world
requirements our products need to address. SYBASE System 10 takes into
account real world circumstances -- it assumes that there will be a
variety of incompatible applications and databases, that networked
computers may fail, and that systems need to adapt to changing business
requirements. Customers who have seen the products are telling us that we
are the first vendor to provide the functionality required for a new
generation of client/server applications to meet their mainstream
operational needs."

SYBASE SOL Server 10

The SYBASE SQL Server product, available since 1987, is Sybase's high
performance relational database server and was designed specifically for
client/server computing. SQL Server software is deployed in large, mission
critical client/server applications at over 5,600 directly-supported
customer sites worldwide.

SQL Server 10 will feature new capabilities such as 100% compatibility with
ANSI Standard SQL89, including declarative referential integrity and
cursor support; new control features such as charge-back accounting;
increased security features; and very large database support providing
sub-second response time for single row activities, improved consistency
checking, and high speed back-up, loading and recovery capabilities. SQL
Server 10 passed the NIST (National Institute for Standards Testing) test
for ANSI SQL89 in October, 1992.

David Truch, past president of the Sybase International User Group and
senior technical specialist at BP Exploration, commented, "The new release
of SYBASE SQL Server provides important new capabilities to its customer
base. Sybase has done a good job of listening to our needs, working with
its customers, and enhancing its products to help us solve real world
problems."

SYBASE Navigation Server Product

The SYBASE Navigation Server product allows customers to manage business
growth by providing a platform for scaling standard computer systems to
match company growth. Customers can make a low cost initial investment in
client/server computing on standard computers. As applications grow,
customers can then rely on Navigation Server capabilities to scale the
system to support terabytes of data, thousands of transactions per second,
and thousands of users.

Navigation Server is a software product that transparently extends SQL
Server capabilities to take full advantage of massively parallel open
systems hardware environments, such as the NCR Model 3600. The product was
developed in partnership with NCR Corporation.

Tom Mays, senior vice president of NCR's General Purpose Products Group,
commented, "NCR's joint development with Sybase offers an open systems
computing environment for applications requiring large databases,
including OLTP and parallelized SQL for decision support."

Navigation Server software works with SYBASE SQL Server systems to provide:
excellent price/performance on massively parallel systems; parallel query
and transaction processing; parallel backup and recovery; and, integrated
design, administration and configuration management tools.

Sybase will make Navigation Server available on other UNIX and open systems
platforms.

SYBASE OmniSQL Gateway Product

Companies building enterprise-wide systems must integrate a variety of
business functions. Consequently, Enterprise Client/Server applications
must simultaneously integrate the various DBMSs and applications used to
support those business functions. OmniSQL Gateway is a turnkey product
that provides the transparent interoperability capabilities required to
achieve this integration.

United Leeds Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom, is an early user of
the OmniSQL Gateway software. Ian Frost, Leeds' Director of Information
Services, commented, "We've set a goal to implement a client/server,
distributed information system throughout our hospital. Sybase's OmniSQL
Gateway helped achieve this goal by presenting a single logical database,
irrespective of the data source, that users -- including developers,
clinicians and administrators -- can transparently access by the tools of
our choice."

The OmniSQL Gateway product is the first connectivity server to provide a
single procedural language interface between a variety of different
databases, including SYBASE, DB2, RMS and Oracle. OmniSQL Gateway allows
SYBASE stored procedures to be used with non-SYBASE data. In addition, the
product provides transparent read/write access and transparent distributed
joins which allows ad hoc queries to be executed using OmniSQL Gateway
with no knowledge of data location or type of database.

The OmniSQL Gateway release, like Sybase's other gateway products, is based
on SYBASE Open Server, a server application toolkit that integrates
heterogeneous data sources and services into a cohesive client/server
environment.

SYBASE Replication Server Product

The SYBASE Replication Server software is the first software product to
provide for the reliable delivery of data and transactions in a
distributed RDBMS environment, even if one or more sites go down. As
companies build business-critical, distributed applications, they need the
assurance that if one site goes down, other sites can continue to operate
effectively.

Replication Server software provides the tools to enable the sharing and
administration of data reliably across distributed client/server sites. It
is designed to work with heterogeneous data sources including SYBASE, DB2
and Oracle. Replication Server software is installed at primary and remote
sites. It then automatically replicates transactions and data to remote
sites and automatically updates sites after system or network outages so
that the data becomes consistent.

Sybase developed the Replication Server product with several key customers
as design partners, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Strategic Air
Command and the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae).

Jack Bayse, technical director of Intelligence Support for the U.S.
Strategic Air Command, commented, "Our mission-critical applications, used
in support of the U.S. Strategic Command's Intelligence Mission, are being
designed to operate in a secure open client/server environment. Users need
to be able to instantaneously access data that may originate anywhere in
the world. And we need to be able to administer and control that data
distribution. The Replication Server's high reliability means that our
users can be confident they get the information they need, when they need
it. And it means that we have a cost-effective, reliable way to administer
our distributed applications."

SYBASE Control Servers

The SYBASE Control Server family of software products is designed to
provide operational control in a distributed environment. According to
customers, control and administration are two of the most important
capabilities required in running mission critical applications in a
distributed, client/server environment.

Sybase has responded to this through a family of products that provides for
systems administration, performance monitoring, configuration and capacity
design, and backup and recovery capabilities. SYBASE Control Server
products are the first and only products automating control functions in a
RDBMS client/server environment.

The SYBASE SA Companion software, which has been available since May 1990,
provides systems and database administration functionality.

The SYBASE SQL Monitor software provides for remote monitoring and tuning
the performance of client/server applications. SQL Monitor provides
real-time graphic displays about transaction activity, CPU and device
utilization, and network traffic.

The SYBASE Configurator product provides capacity planning and design
modeling for database environments. The software analyzes usage
statistics, capacity requirements, application design information, and
throughput requirements, then recommends hardware configurations, selects
database partitioning and estimates performance. These capabilities are
particularly important for sites with massive amounts of data and high
transaction and query volumes. The first release of Configurator is
designed to work with the Navigation Server, and was developed in
partnership with NCR Corporation. Subsequent releases will support other
SYBASE SQL Server environments.

The SYBASE Backup Server software provides high performance, efficient
backup, loading and recovery capabilities, especially for very large
databases. It also provides for backups to remote devices for disaster
recovery and multiple simultaneous unattended dumps for remote or
after-hours continuous operations.
