Now Shipping S-PLUS Version 3.1 Data Analysis and Statistics Software

SEATTLE, Washington--November 18, 1992--Statistical Sciences, Inc.
(StatSci) is now shipping Version 3.1 of S-PLUS, the company's successful
data analysis and statistics software for UNIX workstations and 386/486
personal computers using the DOS or Windows operating system .

Important improvements and enhancements in S-PLUS 3.1 include: 1) faster
performance when analyzing and computing data sets, 2) additional
mathematical computing functions, 3) quality control (QC) charting, 4)
support of color PostScript, and 5) compatibility with S+INTERFACE,
StatSci's new software toolkit for building custom applications with
S-PLUS.

StatSci's flagship product, S-PLUS is a revolutionary data analysis tool
that combines more than 1,200 statistical, math and analysis functions
with an object-oriented programming (OOP) language. It is revolutionizing
the way scientists, engineers. economists and other scientific users
analyze technical data.

S-Plus enables researchers to move their data analysis off mainframe
computers and onto modern, interactive, graphically-oriented desktop
computers. Compared with competitive programs, S-PLUS allows users to
delve more deeply into their data so they can better understand its
meaning and generate higher quality research results.

Typical applications include: NASA analyzing data to determine the effects
of clear-cutting in the Amazon, Centers for Disease Control performing
advanced AIDS research, and most of the top financial institutions
performing a range of studies from market trend analysis to controversial
"chaos" theory .

Major New Features--The most important new feature of S-PLUS 3.1 is faster
execution speeds with less use of memory. Users benefit because they can
analyze larger data sets or perform simulations with less RAM in less
time. Depending on the analysis technique used, performance improvements
of up to 75% are possible.

A significant new set of mathematical computing functions has been added.
These include functions for integration, optimization, finding roots,
multivariate minimization with bounds, and nonlinear least squares with
bounds. Complex numerical linear algebra is also supported.

With the addition of OC charting, S-PLUS 3.1 can now produce Shewhart and
other QC charts of the following types: xbar, s, np, p, c, and u. These
functions are of importance to anyone in manufacturing process control, or
other applications that require the monitoring and analysis of quality
assurance factors.

PostScript color support adds greater control to presentation quality
graphics. Using the number-one industry supported graphics standard,
S-PLUS users can now determine the colors, fonts, and international
character sets in their printed output for a broad range of printers and
plotters.

S-PLUS 3.1 is compatible with S+INTERFACE. This new product from StatSci
provides users the ability to quickly create custom menu-style interfaces
to S-PLUS, or call any of the over 1000 proven data analysis functions of
S-PLUS from another C application.

Other enhancements to S-PLUS 3.1 include new robust techniques for ANOVA
and related statistics, fractionally differenced ARIMA models, model-based
Gaussian hierarchical clustering, new data control functions for
manipulating data sets, and better static loading. Also supplied is a new
programmer's manual to assist users in developing their own custom
analysis functions with S-PLUS's object-oriented data analysis language.

StatSci--Statistical Sciences, Inc. was founded in 1987 to market and
support an enhanced and extended version of AT&T's S statistical language.
Currently the choice of thousands of academic, research, and data analysis
professionals worldwide, S-PLUS is used at AT&T, Boeing, Ciba-Geigy,
Hewlett Packard, Merrill Lynch. Oxford University, Texas Instruments, and
the University of Illinois.

Free Trial--StatSci offers a free 30-day trial program of the complete
product, as well as a free instructional video explaining advanced, modern
data analysis. S-PLUS is available for most popular UNIX workstations and
386/486 personal computers. Pricing and upgrade information is available
from StatSci Sales at (800) 569-0123 or (206) 283-8802, FAX (206) 2838691,
or UNIX email at mktg@statsci.com.
