Microsoft Excel Software Development Kit
Version 4 for Microsoft Windows and the Apple Macintosh

Now, for the first time, software developers can create custom applications
in Microsoft Excel from a high-level, compiled programming language like
Microsoft C/C++ with MICROSOFT EXCEL SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT KIT (SDK) from
Microsoft Press.

This new book/disk package, developed jointly between the Microsoft Excel
group and Microsoft Press, provides the technical information and
programming tools to create high-performance custom applications, add-ons,
and Wizards for both Windows and the Macintosh using Microsoft Excel.

"Built into the Microsoft Excel 4.0 program is an exposed application
programming interface (API) to the macro language," said Dan Williams, a
product manager for Microsoft Excel. "This API was used in Microsoft Excel
4.0 to implement the Solver and Crosstab ReportWizard features, and
MICROSOFT EXCEL SDK shows independent developers how to take advantage of
the same technology."

Performance, control, and productivity are the main reasons to program
Microsoft Excel from a DLL or code resource instead of the Microsoft Excel
macro language. Using the API, developers can call nearly all the
functions built into Microsoft Excel--such as the mathematical functions
and user interface functions--that were previously available only in the
macro language. Anyone familiar with Microsoft Excel and with programming
for Windows or the Macintosh can start building powerful, integrated
applications right away. MICROSOFT EXCEL SDK includes:

* The new Microsoft Excel application programming interface
on disk, for both Windows and the Macintosh
* The API function reference
* The binary interchange file format for worksheets, charts,
  and workbooks
* Apple Events for Macintosh programming
* Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) and XITable format
* The EXCEL4.INI file, plus startup files for all versions
  of Microsoft Excel
* Information on creating custom help displays

A comprehensive index helps readers quickly locate information on any topic
in the book, and a free wall poster makes it easy to reference Microsoft
Excel API "quick facts" at a glance.

System requirements for Microsoft Windows are an 80286, 80386, or higher
microprocessor (80386 recommended); MS-DOS operating system version 3.1 or
later, Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or later; 2 MB of memory or 4 MB if
creating DLLs; and Microsoft Excel for Windows version 4.0 or later. To
create DLLs, a compiler that can generate DLLs for Microsoft Windows such
as Microsoft C version 5.1 or later or Microsoft QuickC for Windows is
also required.

System requirements for the Apple Macintosh are 1 MB of memory (2 MB if
using MultiFinder or System 7.0; 4 MB and a compiler if creating code
resources); System 6.0.2 or later, Finder 6.1 or later, or System 7.0, and
Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 4.0 or later.
