Fit Kit Software Provides Fitting Routines for Accurate, Efficient
Numerical Analysis

November 6, 1992--FIT KIT helps users manipulate and analyze sets of data
in the form of x,y pairs, yet requires only a minimal understanding of the
internal processes used. It fits a variety of numerical expressions to a
set of data, using fitting routines such as linear regression, polynomial
fit, multilinear regression, and nonlinear regression. Linear combinations
include Legendre and Chebyshev polynomials and Bessel functions.

Developed by Timothy W. Haywood, University of North Carolina, Wilmington,
FIT KIT generates the derivative or integral of a data set, smooths data,
and takes a cubic spline or fast Fourier transform of the set. It will
find the convolution, deconvolution, or correlation between two data sets.
In addition, users can adjust entire data sets by an additive or
multiplicative constant and can add, subtract, multiply, or divide two
data sets.

"Students are usually introduced to simple numerical analysis in their
first advanced laboratory, where they may be required to write a simple
program," says Haywood. "Unfortunately, their exposure to numerical
analysis often stops there, because more complex algorithms are generally
not available in course software. Some techniques, such as nonlinear
regression, are found only on mainframe computers, where more in-depth
programming knowledge is required."

FIT KIT is ideal for advanced undergraduate physics majors, who are
expected to adapt established algorithms to their work by writing new
programs for new tasks. FIT KIT brings a set of standard analytical
procedures together in an accessible interface so that users can see these
algorithms at work without necessitating extensive programming
experience.

Reviewers agree that FIT KIT supports a wide range of fitting needs. "This
is a professionally done program with a modern interface," says Clint
Sprott, University of Wisconsin, Madison. "It offers a lot of flexibility
in manipulating and analyzing two-dimensional data sets." Mark Williams,
Salisbury State University, says, "FIT KIT offers the undergraduate
experimenter a good set of fitting routines." And Thurman R. Kremser,
Albright College, calls the software "An outstanding data analysis program
offering a large variety of linear, polynomial, and nonlinear fits."

FIT KIT is published and distributed by Physics Academic Software, which is
a project of the American Institute of Physics in cooperation with the
American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers
as part of a continuing series of educational software from PAS.

FIT KIT operates on IBM PC, XT, AT, and PS/2 personal computers with at
least 640K of RAM memory and CGA, Hercules, EGA, or VGA graphics. FIT KIT
can perform all functions without a graphics card except generating plots.
A math-coprocessor and a graphics-capable printer are recommended.

FIT KIT may be purchased from Physics Academic Software for $49.95 plus
$3.50 shipping and handling for the first package ($7.50 foreign) and $.75
for each additional package. Lab Packs, which include ten copies of the
software and one User's Manual, are available for $149.95.

For a limited time, you can purchase the entire PAS collection, with or
without Lab Packs, and save up to 33% off the regular price. Physics
Academic Software offers a no-risk guarantee by providing a full refund
for packages returned within 30 days.

PAS also offers a Standing Order Plan, which brings the latest in
innovative physics courseware to your door, along with exceptional
savings. When you join the Standing Order Plan, you will automatically
receive each new PAS program, with or without Lab Packs, and save up to
33% off the list price.
