UnixWare OS Supports DPT SCSI Controllers
DPT and Univel Join Forces to Provide Total SCSI Solution

November 23, 1992 -- Maitland, Florida - Distributed Processing Technology
(DPT), a leading manufacturer of SCSI peripheral controllers, is
announcing that it's high-performance SmartCache Plus controllers have
been integrated into Univel's UnixWare Operating System. DPT's SmartCache
Plus EISA SCSI controllers will allow users to take full advantage of
UnixWare's 32-bit capabilities. SmartCache Plus also provides access to a
wide range of SCSI peripherals, including disk, tape and CD-ROM.

DPT started working with Univel early in the development cycle of UnixWare
to ensure high performance and compatibility with a wide range of
peripherals. Performance enhancing features such as support for concurrent
I/O processing, which allows multiple read and write requests to be
processed simultaneously; scatter/gather data transfer, which increases
data throughput; and support for hardware-based disk caching and disk
mirroring have been added.

"One of DPT's primary goals is to provide a total SCSI solution with
industry-wide compatibility," says Dave Race, vice president of marketing
at DPT. "The work we have done with Univel provides UnixWare users with
the mass storage connectivity they have been asking for -- that is, the
ability to use a wide variety of SCSI mass storage devices such as disk
tape and CD-ROM drives."

With the support of vendors like DPT, Univel will provide end users with
access to a wide variety of mainstream software and hardware solutions for
UnixWare. UnixWare will bring the power of UNIX to the end user, so they
can run productivity, custom and semi-custom applications on industry
standard hardware with seamless integration to NetWare, as well as
existing UNIX networks.

Background information:
SmartCache Plus - Award Winning SCSI controller from DPT

SmartCache Plus is the only SCSI controller on the market that can be
configured as either a non-caching or a caching controller. The
entry-level-priced, non-caching configuration is converted to a high-end
caching controller by simply adding DPT's unique plug-on caching module
and up to 16 megabytes of cache RAM to the base controller. An add-on
mirroring module provides support for a software-independent array of
mirrored drives. This scalable architecture provides manufacturers and
integrators a complete range of price/performance options, suitable for
systems ranging from standalone workstations and small networks up to
multiprocessor-equipped file servers. SmartCache Plus EISA is the SCSI
adapter of choice for manufacturers such as AST, NEC, Dell, AT&T/NCR,
Intel, Wyse, Wang, and Siemens.

DPT corporate background

near Orlando, Florida with a government sales office located near
Washington, DC. European sales offices are located near London and Munich.
DPT manufactures intelligent, peripheral controllers and connectivity
software for microcomputers. DPT's revenues make it one of the largest
peripheral manufacturers in the world. DPT's technology innovations
include the first caching disk controller for minicomputers and PCs, the
first software independent disk array solution for the PC, and the first
cache-convertible controller for the PC. DPT controllers are sold
worldwide through a network of major distributors and OEMs.

Univel corporate background

UNIVEL, founded in December of 1991, is a partnership between Novell, Inc.
and UNIX system Laboratories, Inc. The company is chartered with growing
the UNIX system and network computing market by providing open system
software solutions for distributed enterprise-wide computing. Univel's
UnixWare family of products will incorporate the most powerful UNIX
operating system available today, seamless integration to NetWare and a
graphical user interface which allows access to the broadest range of
applications.
