Apple Announces Details of SNMP Support for AppleTalk and TCP/IP Networks

SAN FRANCISCO, California--October 28, 1992--At Interop Fall '92, Apple
Computer, Inc. today announced pricing, packaging and availability for new
AppleTalk and TCP/IP network software products that incorporate the
standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The two new products
will enable system administrators to manage Macintosh personal computers
on their global networks using existing SNMP management consoles.

AppleTalk Connection for Macintosh and TCP/IP Connection for Macintosh
bring SNMP manageability to any Macintosh computer running Apple's System
7 operating system. Both products provide a new System 7 service called
the SNMP Manager, which is designed to support SNMP agents from Apple and
Apple developers, including products such as WatchTower from InterCon
Systems Corp. and LANsurveyor from Neon Software Inc.

"Apple recognizes the need to integrate industry standards such as SNMP
into AppleTalk and System 7," said Morris Taradalsky, vice president and
general manager of Apple's Enterprise Systems Division. "This is just one
example of Apple's drive to develop the robust networking products
required by today's large organizations."

The SNMP agents provided with AppleTalk connection and TCP/IP connection
include the Network Agent, which collects data on the network data links;
the AppleTalk Agent and TCP/IP Agent, which collect data about their
respective transport protocols; and the Macintosh Agent, which collects
data about the Macintosh computer hardware and software configuration.
These agents allow system administrators, using a variety of different
platforms, to track Macintosh computers over a network and to easily
identify and diagnose network-related problems. All management information
provided by these agents is available to Third Party SNMP consoles over
both TCP/IP and AppleTalk protocols.

SNMP is an industry-standard protocol for network management defined by the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Together, the IETF and Apple have
defined two standard MIBs (Management Information Bases) for AppleTalk
which ensure that Macintosh computers will fit into existing SNMP
management systems.

AppleTalk Connection for Macintosh

The AppleTalk Connection for Macintosh is a complete networking product
that includes data link drivers for LocalTalk, Ethernet, and Token Ring,
the AppleTalk transport protocols, NBP built-in naming service, and SNMP
network manageability. It provides a foundation for network printing and
file sharing, as well as for collaborative and client-server applications
such as electronic mail and database service. The AppleTalk connection
product provides a convenient way for Macintosh customers to add SNMP
manageability while updating the AppleTalk software that comes bundled
with their systems.

AppleTalk is the network system built into every Macintosh computer. It
operates over LocalTalk, Ethernet, Token-Ring and many other network
datalinks. AppleTalk ensures resources are viewed in a consistent manner,
independent of the computing platform on which the resources reside.
AppleTalk services from Apple and Third Parties, including file, print,
mail and calendar services, are known for their ease of installation and
use.

According to International Data Corp., AppleTalk is one of the most widely
used network protocols worldwide with over 3.8 million nodes installed in
1991 and a 40 percent compound annual growth rate since 1989. This
projects to about 5 million AppleTalk nodes installed worldwide by the end
of 1992.

TCP/lP Connection for Macintosh

TCP/IP Connection for Macintosh provides the software necessary to connect
a Macintosh personal computer to a TCP/IP network, and to manage the
Macintosh computer from a console using the SNMP. The product includes the
MacTCP Transport protocol; SNMP management agents for the data link,
TCP/IP protocol, and Macintosh computer hardware and software; data-link
drivers; a DNR hosts file interface; and a ping test application (MPing).

TCP/IP connection provides the standard interface for all Macintosh-based
TCP/IP network applications such as FTP, Telnet, NFS, and others. It
allows either the users to set their own IP address, or the administrator
to provide preset addresses to TCP/IP users. Driver software is included
for Apple's LocalTalk, Ethernet, and Token Ring data links. TCP/IP
connection is the source for the latest version of the TCP/IP network
protocol for the Macintosh computer. It is available in a single-user
package as well as in multi-user license extension products, which offer
economical option for large organizations.

Apple also offers an administrator's kit for both AppleTalk connection and
TCP/IP connection which provides comprehensive documentation and utilities
for centralized configuration of the SNMP and TCP/IP software modules.

Pricing and Availability

AppleTalk Connection for Macintosh will be available in three versions for
desktop users; the single-user package will be available for US$39, the 20
user package for US$200, and the 200 user package for US$1,400. The
AppleTalk Connection for Macintosh Administrator's Kit will be available
for US$129.

TCP/IP Connection for Macintosh will be available in three versions for
users. The single-user package will be available for US$59, the 20-user
package for US$500, and the 200-user package for US$3,000. The TCP/IP
Connection for Macintosh Administrator's Kit will be available for US$199.
All of the prices listed represent the manufacturer's suggested retail
price.

All of these products will be available in Spring 1993 from Apple
authorized resellers in the United States or by calling Apple Direct at
1-800-795-1000.
