U.S. ROBOTICS INTRODUCES FIVE NEW HIGH-SPEED WORLDPORT PORTABLE MODEMS AND
MODEM FOR HP 95LX

SKOKIE, Ill. -- October 26, 1992 -- U.S. Robotics today announced six new
WorldPort portable modems; five high-speed portable modems and a modem for
the Hewlett-Packard 95LX Palmtop Cradle. These modems make the WorldPort
line the most complete portable modem line available, and expand U.S.
Robotics' strong product offering in the rapidly-growing portable modem
market. The new products will all ship prior to December, 1992, and
include V.32bis 14,400 bps and V.32 9600 bps modems with and without fax
capabilities, a 2400 bps/V.42bis modem for the Hewlett-Packard Palmtop
Cradle and a V.32bis 14,400 bps fax/data modem for the Apple PowerBook.

"The new WorldPort products reinforce U.S. Robotics' commitment to
providing traveling professionals with leading-edge communications
products and to continuing the WorldPort tradition of market leadership,"
said Marshall Toplansky, U.S. Robotics vice president of marketing. "U.S.
Robotics now offers portable modem users the most complete line in the
industry, with sixteen products that span the spectrum from fax/data
modems and high performance V.32bis modems to modems designed specifically
for palmtop computers."

"The new high-speed WorldPort modems are also perfect products for people
who need remote LAN access," added Toplansky. "If users have V.32bis
modems or communication servers attached to their LANs, like our new
Shared Access products, it makes sense that they would take advantage of
that high-speed capability and save themselves time and money."

The installed base of laptop computers is expected to jump to 22.5 million
units in 1995, up from 8.8 million units in 1990 (Source: International
Data Corp.). With the growing number of laptop and palmtop computer users
comes an increasing need for mobile connectivity; the WorldPort line's new
high-speed products are positioned to address that need.

The new products are fully-featured, and include V.42bis and MNP 5 data
compression, V.42 and MNP 2-4 error control and LEDs. In initial testing,
the WorldPort modems have performed exceptionally, even beating
competitors' desktop modems in throughput tests. Each product is a
complete, "plug-and-play" solution, with cabling, an AC adapter, software
and a 9-volt battery.

Battery operation is a key feature for portable modem users concerned with
conserving their laptop battery power. Some modem manufacturers have
chosen to utilize rechargeable batteries, which force users to plan for
recharging time and provide only one-third the battery life of an alkaline
battery. Other manufacturers' modems are powered from the laptop battery,
which affects the computer's usable battery life. U.S. Robotics chose
readily-available 9-volt batteries as their power source, because they can
easily be purchased internationally, and give the user more flexibility.
Of course, the modems may also be powered from the AC adapter, but AC
power is not always available, especially when using the modem with an
acoustic coupler in a phone booth, airport or hotel room.

The new WorldPort fax and data modems will be shipping throughout the
remainder of 1992. The first products to ship will be the WorldPort 2400
V.42bis for Hewlett-Packard Palmtops and the WorldPort 14,400, which will
ship November 1.

The WorldPort 2400 V.42bis for Hewlett-Packard Palmtops is the first modem
designed for the Hewlett-Packard Palmtop Cradle. Another new product
''first'' is the WorldPort 14,400 Fax for the PowerBook, the only external
14,400 bps modem for the Apple PowerBook. The WorldPort product line has a
history of industry-leading products, including: WorldPort 9600, the first
portable V.32 modem; WorldPort 2496, the first portable fax/data modem;
and WorldPort 2400/MNP, the first portable MNP-5 modem.
