"Little Black Book of Computer Viruses" is Applauded by Security Pros and
Programmers

Mark Ludwig's explosive, controversial, best-seller The Little Black Book
of Computer Viruses has been acclaimed as a necessary tool-of-the-trade by
security professionals, law enforcement officials, computer programmers,
network and systems personnel, and even anti-virus programmers and
developers. It is the first book ever published that contains computer
virus code!

"Computer viruses are not evil, and programmers have a right to create
them, possess them and experiment with them," Ludwig said. Furthermore he
continues, "These viruses are designed so that security people can see
what a virus looks like and how it behaves. How can anyone realistically
be in charge of security without having ever seen a virus?"

The 178-page Volume One covers The Basic Technology, and includes chapters
on the basics of the computer virus, types of viruses, the functional
elements of a virus, and tools needed for writing viruses.

There are four case studies: a simple COM file infector, a sophisticated
executable virus, a simple boot sector virus, and a sophisticated boot
sector virus. The case studies cover the basic structure of the viruses,
the copy mechanism, the search mechanism, taming the virus and much more.

Seven appendices provide the assembly language listing of all the viruses
discussed in the text, including: the TIMID Virus, the INTRUDER Virus, a
Basic Boot Sector, the KILROY Virus, the STEALTH Virus, the HEX File
Loader, and BIOS and DOS Interrupt Functions.

Professionals can also order the Program Disk which includes complete
source code (ASM, PAS and BAS files), as well as HEX listings and
compiled, executable programs for all of the viruses and related programs
in the book.

Volume Two, scheduled for publication in early 1993, discusses the
scientific applications of computer viruses. There is a new field of
scientific study known as artificial life (AL) research which is opening
up as a result of the invention of viruses and related entities. "Since
computer viruses are functionally similar to living organisms, biology can
teach us a lot about them, both how they behave and how to make them
better", says Ludwig.

Military applications will be discussed in the Third Volume which will be
published in late 1993. Ludwig says that this volume ". . . will probe
military strategies and real-life attacks, and dig into the development of
viral weapon systems, defeating anti-viral defenses, etc." Some high level
officials in various countries already believe their computers have been
attacked for political reasons. This Third Volume will be welcome by
military establishments worldwide.

DIANE Publishing, the largest distributor of computer security books in the
