SAN FRANCISCO, September 22, 1992--At the Seybold Conference and Exposition
today, Aldus Corporation announced Aldus TrapWise 1.0 for Windows.
TrapWise will perform professional-quality, spot and process color
trapping (i.e., produce spreads and chokes) on color-conforming
encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files.

TrapWise is designed for use by prepress professionals in service bureaus,
prepress houses, commercial print shops, in-plant print production
departments, and publishing operations. It was developed as a joint effort
between Graphic Edge Inc. and Aldus, and has been marketed under the name
RipPrep since March 1992. Aldus acquired all rights to the product--and
its patent pending--in July of this year. Current RipPrep customers will
automatically receive TrapWise.

"Our guiding principle in designing TrapWise 1.0 has been to take an
already great prepress product and make it even better," said Ranjit
Mulgaonkar, business manager of the Aldus Prepress Group. "We're
simplifying the user interface and improving the workflow and
documentation."

TrapWise builds on the capabilities of RipPrep to trap almost any object
within a color-conforming EPS file. While RipPrep offered trapping only
for process color printing, TrapWise will produce precision traps for both
process and spot color printing by handling all three color-ink
scenarios--spot to spot, spot to process, and process to process. It will
also handle complex trapping situations, such as graduated fills, very
small text, and several intersecting colors. Customers will be able to use
TrapWise for jobs with up to eight inks: the four CMYK (process color)
inks plus four spot color inks.

TrapWise will also enhance the way RipPrep manages the prepress workflow.
Operators will, for example, be able to save time by creating predefined,
customized sets of trapping configurations for use on particular jobs and
paper stocks.

"Our goal is to provide a complete desktop prepress solution for the
prepress professional," Mulgaonkar continued. "With both Aldus PressWise
and TrapWise, we're bringing page imposition and trapping capability to
our customers."

Trapping and how TrapWise fits in

Trapping is a process in color printing that compensates for potential
misregistration as paper passes through a printing press. Without
trapping, printed output may have slight gaps between color elements that
allow the underlying paper stock to show through. With trapping, however,
the edges of color objects are enlarged or reduced just enough to cover
any gaps that might occur.

TrapWise will produce these traps by automatically applying appropriate
spreads and chokes to objects in color-conforming EPS files. Such files
can be generated by PostScript-language applications such as Aldus
FreeHand, Aldus PageMaker, QuarkXPress, and Adobe Illustrator.

Because TrapWise has an open architecture, it will be able to trap files
produced on any computer platform that can create color-conforming EPS
files--including Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX computers. Once processed
through TrapWise, the resulting EPS pages can be output to any
PostScript-compatible device, including imagesetters, platesetters, and
printing presses. Customers will also be able to pass the trapped EPS
files to other Macintosh or Windows applications for further processing--
for example, to impose the pages in PressWise.

"TrapWise is easier and better than traditional methods or high-end
systems," said Ed Underwood, technical manager of Sandford PrePress
Systems Inc. "All of its digital calculations are perfect, and its
trapping of vignettes is incredible."

Pricing and availability

Aldus TrapWise 1.0 will be available in the U.S. and Canada directly from
Aldus, OEMs, and graphic arts resellers in the fourth quarter of 1992.
Pricing will be announced at a later date. Registered owners of RipPrep
will receive a free update to TrapWise, and all TrapWise customers will
receive 90 days of free technical support and a 60-day money-back
