THE MATHWORKS AND dSPACE INTRODUCE INTEGRATED SOLUTION FOR DESIGN,
SIMULATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF REAL-TIME CONTROL SYSTEMS

Solution Enables Automatic C Code Generation, Slashing Time and Cost to
Develop C Code; Gives Engineers a Way to Cut Time to Market While Building
Higher Quality Products

NATICK, Mass./PADERBORN, Germany, Oct. 26, 1992 - The MathWorks, Inc. and
dSPACE GmbH today introduced a high performance, low-cost, hardware and
software solution for the design, analysis and implementation of real-time
control and embedded systems. This solution is based on The MathWorks' new
SIMULINK C Code Generator, the new SIMULINK Accelerator, and a
comprehensive family of dSPACE hardware offerings including plugin boards
for PCs, expansion boxes with bus interfaces, and Ethernet compatible
expansion boxes for lab or in-vehicle use. Based on established products
from The MathWorks including MATLAB, powerful numeric computation software
with outstanding graphics and visualization capabilities; SIMULINK,
software for modeling and analyzing dynamic systems; and
application-specific toolboxes, this new solution provides automatic
generation of C code for real-time control applications across multiple
platforms with a price-performance ratio dramatically better than
previously available methods .

The SIMULINK C Code Generator enables engineers in automotive, aerospace,
telecommunications, electronics, computer peripherals, robotics, and other
industries to cut time to market for products. In addition, the C Code
Generator has been designed to work in an open environment to give
multiple users access to code and the ability to interface to multiple
hardware devices. Also included in the new simulation environment is The
MathWorks' new SIMULINK Accelerator for compiling systems, linking the
compiled C code into SIMULINK for code verification, and accelerating the
simulation process.

dSPACE hardware and software in the systems are based on digital signal
processing technology that enables extremely fast processing during
real-time operation. dSPACE hardware is based on technologically advanced
Texas Instruments TMS320C30 and TMS320C40 floating-point DSPs, with
computing power starting at 33 MFLOPS.

"The MathWorks' new simulation environment, with the SIMULINK C Code
Generator, enables engineers designing systems-- from anti-lock braking
systems and robots to stability and navigation systems-- to substantially
shorten development time and heighten product quality," said John N.
Little, The MathWorks' president and chief executive officer. "Other
simulation environments are too costly, cumbersome or complicated to be
cost-efficient. Ours fills a pressing need for one that's affordable, easy
to learn, and easily accessible by everyone on the development team."

Dr. Herbert Hanselmann, co-founder and senior managing partner at dSPACE
said, "Until now, being able to implement all sorts of control designs in
minutes has been a fantasy. What we offer requires no coding, no
development of proprietary electronics, no system integration hassel, and
no execution speed concerns. We really have an affordable plug-and-play
solution."

SIMULINK C Code Generator Features

The SIMULINK C Code Generator automatically generates C code for
continuous, discrete-time and hybrid systems modeled as SIMULINK block
diagrams. Users can interface the code directly to hardware for real-time
testing. Previously, engineers had to write C code manually, a
time-consuming process in which new bugs were often introduced. The direct
linking of code into real-time testing environments was impossible or
prohibitively expensive. The SIMULINK C Code Generator can be used for
"hardware-in-the-loop" testing, stand-alone simulation, embedded real-time
control and real-time simulation. It also facilitates rapid prototyping,
in which designs can be rapidly iterated by editing block diagrams and
generating new code.

SIMULINK Accelerator Speeds Simulations

The SIMULINK Accelerator allows users to compile an entire SIMULINK system,
or subsystem, so that simulations run significantly faster than in
uncompiled form. The accelerator automatically creates a compiled version
of the system, links it, and replaces the block diagram model for
simulation. At the same time, all of the interactive simulation
capabilities, including the ability to change parameters and display
results in scope windows "on the fly," remain intact.

Features, Benefits of MATLAB, SIMULINK

MATLAB merges the industry's most powerful and accurate numeric computation
software, an easy-to-use fourth-generation programming language, and
outstanding graphics capabilities, with an extensive family of
application-specific toolboxes.

With this unique combination, users can analyze and visualize data;
prototype, analyze and optimize engineering system designs and algorithms;
and explore new concepts in research. They can also create mathematical
models, solve systems of equations and perform general engineering and
scientific computations - all without leaving the MATLAB environment.
Toolboxes extend MATLAB by adding specialized functions for particular
applications. These include neural networks, signal processing, control
system design and analysis, system identification and optimization.

The toolboxes are created by world-class experts in their respective fields
and represent theory and algorithms at the cutting edge of scientific and
engineering research. SIMULINK is built on MATLAB, offering users
immediate access to MATLAB's comprehensive functionality. It gives
engineers an open-system solution for modeling and analyzing dynamic
systems, including linear, nonlinear, continuous, discrete and hybrid
types.

With SIMULINK, users employ familiar point-and-click techniques to build
models using their choice of block diagrams, differential and difference
equations, and preexisting C, Fortran and MATLAB routines. Users also can
conduct live simulations, displaying results during the process, as well
as change system parameters and see the effects immediately.

Configuration, Pricing, Availability

The MathWorks and dSPACE will join hardware and software into a totally
integrated solution for design and systems engineers. The MathWorks'
simulation software also has an open interface to hardware from multiple
vendors. The entire environment, including MATLAB, SIMULINK, the SIMULINK
C Code Generator, the SIMULINK Accelerator and dSPACE hardware, will be
available in Q4, 1992, at a price of $30,000 in the U.S. (contact vendor
for international pricing) for the Sun SPARCstation. The SIMULINK C Code
Generator will be available in 1993 on the HP9000/300, 400 and 700; IBM
RS/6000; DEC RISC under ULTRIX; the SGI; and on PCs and Apple Macintosh
computers. Quantity and educational discounts are available.
