MULTI-TECH NOW SHIPPING HIGH-SPEED POCKET MODEM & FAX/DATACOMM SOFTWARE FOR
APPLE COMPUTERS

MOUNDS VIEW, MINN., September 16, 1992--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading
manufacturer of data communications equipment, is now shipping a
high-speed pocket modem for Apple computers and communications software
for both data and fax transmissions. According to Multi-Tech President
Raghu Sharma, "The Apple PowerBook computer's increasing popularity
heralds it as the choice for portable, high-performance computing, but
many of the new compact modems on the market lack the features required
for taking full advantage of its capability. Our MultiModemU provides the
transmission speed to keep the traveling professional's long-distance
communications costs as low as possible. In addition, features and
operational indicators, together with Quick Link II Fax communications
software, offer PowerBook users a complete computing package for use
anywhere there is a phone line."

The new MT1432MU-MAC supports the fastest transmission speed standardized
for data (CCITT V.32bis/V.32 14.4K and 9600 bps) and fax transmissions of
9600/4800 bps with any Group 3 or Group 2 fax machine, fax card, or
fax/modem in the world. It comes with Quick Link II Fax communications
software from Smith Micro Software of Huntington Beach, Calif. The new
fax-capable communications software comes with all Multi-Tech modems for
the Apple market. MultiModemU, designed for the fast growing
laptop/notebook computer market, offers many of the same features, speed
and LEDs provided by the full-sized MultiModemU, as well as the same power
and versatility found in the full-sized version.

The new modem's power conservation feature offers the traveler extensive,
uninterrupted use. This feature is the modem's stand-by mode. In stand-by
mode the modem is on, but no communications activity is in process. This
might be the case where a user is waiting for a dial-in auto-answer call.
The MultiModemU uses a standard 9-volt battery which operates the modem
for 1.5 hours on line or 6 hours in stand-by mode in addition to a
standard AC adapter.

An attached serial cable equipped with a mini-DIN connector comes with
MultiModem for Apple compatibility. In addition to complying with the
CCITT's V.32 bis standard for 14.4 Kbps data communications, the modem is
downward compatible with lower standard speeds. It provides V.42 error and
V.42bis data compression yielding asynchronous throughputs up to 57.6
Kbps. Fax transmissions are at 9600-/4800- bps with any Group 3 or Group 2
fax machine, fax card or fax/modem in the world. It also responds to the
EIA Class 2 command set, which is the de facto industry standard for
high-performance fax software.

The MultiModemU uses industry standard "AT" commands for modem
configuration and dialing; it has a built-in dialing directory for storing
up to 10 phone numbers. Firmware upgrades are simplified through a special
design feature that accepts a downloaded file from our Bulletin Board
Service (BBS), eliminating the need for a PROM change. And remote
configuration capability provides an ever-present link for tech support
assistance no matter where the user may be. The modem has a built-in RJ11
jack for connection to the phone line.

Available for shipment now, the new modem is priced at $729.00.
