Shiva Announces LanRover/E
Multi-port Remote Networking Servers for Enterprise-Wide Networks

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., October 12, 1992 -- Shiva Corporation today announced
LanRover/E for NetWare and LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access, the
first multi-port servers that provide transparent, cost-effective remote
networking for PC and Macintosh users. Designed for enterprise networks,
both LanRover/E models are available in four- and eight-port versions.

Shiva's new LanRover/E addresses the needs of mobile and home users for
remote networking, an emerging, high-growth market according to Forrester
Research and International Data Corp. LanRover/E is targeted at network
and MIS managers faced with supporting increasing numbers of mobile and
home users who want access to the corporate network with the same
transparency, ease of use and efficiency they have at the office.

With LanRover/E, remote Macintosh users with AppleTalk Remote Access
software or PC users running DOS or Windows and Shiva's client software
can dial into their corporate network over standard telephone lines and
take advantage of local-area network (LAN) resources such as electronic
mail, file servers, databases and groupware, just as if they were a node
on the network. Users don't need to leave their familiar desktop
environment, whether it's DOS, Windows, or the Macintosh. Since remote
users don't need to learn a new interface or complicated commands to use
LAN resources, corporate training and support costs stay low.

"LanRover/E goes beyond workgroup solutions to address the remote
networking needs of mission-critical, enterprise networks," said Dan
Schwinn, Shiva president and founder. "MIS managers need products that
offer scalability, centralized management and security. LanRover/E meets
those needs and provides a platform for future multiprotocol
environments," Schwinn commented.

Price/Performance

LanRover/E's dedicated, reliable hardware provides the lowest cost-per-port
for enterprise networks. Available in four- and eight-port versions,
LanRover/E allows either four or eight users to dial in simultaneously.
Each port connects to a modem, which lets MIS managers take advantage of
new modem technology and falling modem prices. In the eight-port
configuration, the cost per port is only $375 (not including the cost of
the external modem).

LanRover/E's powerful 16 MHz 68020 processor provides high-speed
performance. Each RS-232 serial port can support up to 64Kbps
connections.

Central Installation & Management

The LanRover/E unit comes with hardware so it can be mounted in a standard
19-inch rack in the corporate wiring closet. It connects directly to
either thick (10Base5), thin (10Base2) or twisted pair (10BaseT) Ethernet.
LanRover/E is designed for high connection density, and with its standard
"1U" rack form factor can provide 100 dial-in lines in a rack in less than
two feet of vertical space.

LanRover/E includes Shiva Net Manager software, which provides central
configuration and management from a PC or Macintosh anywhere on the
network, even a remote computer. Multiple LanRover/Es can be managed and
configured as a single, logical unit, making this solution easily scalable
for enterprise networks. User names, passwords, and callback phone numbers
can be stored in user list files, then downloaded simultaneously across
the network to any number of LanRover/Es. Shiva Net Manager also allows
software-only upgrades on LanRover/E; there's no need to change ROMs or
disconnect LanRover/E from the network.

Security

To restrict unauthorized access to enterprise networks, security features
include automatic callback, and individual user and administrator
passwords. An activity log reports error conditions and keeps track of
when a LanRover/E remote connection is attempted, established or
disconnected. LanRover/E is also compatible with third party security
devices that use hand-held tokens for maximum dial-in security.

LanRover/E for NetWare

LanRover/E for NetWare is the first remote networking server specifically
designed for PC enterprise networks. Following in the footsteps of Shiva's
award-winning NetModem/E, the LanRover/E provides Novell NetWare users
with easy, intuitive and transparent dial-in access to their corporate
LANs.

LanRover/E for NetWare includes client software that lets remote DOS and
Windows users take advantage of network services such as electronic mail,
client-server databases and groupware. The client comes with an unlimited
site license. It also includes DOS and Windows versions of Shiva Net
Manager for central management, administration and monitoring. Network
managers can elect to use Novell NetWare Bindery or an internal LanRover/E
table for user authentication.

LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access

The LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) is a high-performance,
multiport remote networking server for Macintosh and PowerBook computers
running AppleTalk Remote Access software. Building on the technology of
LanRover/L, Shiva's single-port, LocalTalk-based server, the new
LanRover/E provides enterprisewide dial-in to Ethernet networks.

LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access supports a full implementation of
the AppleTalk Remote Access Protocol (ARAP). It also supports Apple
Computer's standard specification for ARA modem scripts (CCLs), which
ensures compatibility with a broad range of modems and security systems.

LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access can mimic the bridging functionality
of a Macintosh ARA server so that the remote Macintosh is an end node on
the network; this approach requires minimal configuration and management.
It can also function as a full AppleTalk router, creating a separate
network for dial-in users; this approach improves dial-in performance on
busy networks. LanRover/E for AppleTalk Remote Access also features
configurable zone access privileges.

Future Plans

Shiva is working closely with Apple Computer, Novell, and the Internet
Engineering Task Force (ETF) on the next generation of AppleTalk over PPP
(Point to Point Protocol) and IPX over PPP, which will enable
multi-protocol, cross-platform support in a single remote networking
server. Future multi-protocol support for LanRover/E will include ARA,
IPX, NetBEUI and TCP/IP.

Pricing and Availability

LanRover/E will be available in November 1992 directly from Shiva Corp. and
from distributors and resellers worldwide. Suggested U.S. list price for
LanRover/4E for AppleTalk Remote Access and LanRover/4E for NetWare is
$1999. Suggested U.S. list price for LanRover/8E for AppleTalk Remote
Access and LanRover/8E for NetWare is $2999.
