SEMINAR EXPLORES USERS' PERSPECTIVE OF OPEN SYSTEMS

Seminar Sessions During UNIX EXPO, Sept. 22-24, Will Provide Show Attendees
with Corporate Case Studies of Open Systems

(Fort Lee, NJ, Aug. 31) -- The experience and perspectives of corporate end
users implementing Open Systems in their information systems shops (IS)
will be the focus of two unique seminar sessions during UNIX EXPO,
September 22-24, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.

Both sessions are entitled "Open Systems Payoffs and Pitfalls: The User
Perspective," and will be moderated by Jennifer Richards, vice president
of Open Systems Advisors, Inc., based in Boston, MA. The first seminar is
scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m., and the second session is
scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 3:30 p.m.

Ms. Richards said the IS executives will explain how they became involved
in Open Systems and offer their perspectives on the transition to Open
Systems. The end users will focus on four areas in relation to their
experiences, according to Ms. Richards.

The four areas of discussion will be: the fit between business strategy and
Open Systems strategy; the technical issues encountered during systems
selection, development and installation; a nutshell view of comparative
cost analysis and justification; and the organizational ramifications of
adopting new technology.

"Contrasting the four case studies," said Ms. Richards, "will give
prospective users a valuable chance to assess what they're getting into
with a move to Open Systems."

The panelists in the Tuesday session will be: Kevin Reilly, director of
operations and technology for Hyatt Hotels Corporation in Oak Brook, IL;
and Mark Factor, MIS director of Au Bon Pain, the $68 million retail food
business based in Boston, MA.

The panelists in the Wednesday afternoon session will be: James A.
Stikeleather, director of systems development for Kash n' Karry, a $1
billion Florida supermarket chain, with headquarters in Tampa; and Scott
Meadow, director of executive information systems for Liz Claiborne, Inc.,
in North Bergen, NJ.

Mr. Stikeleather will describe how Kash n' Karry executed a complete
turnaround in just one year from a mainframe-based company to an Open
Systems shop. Moving to Open Systems will save costs and increase end user
productivity over the long term, he explained, but considerable time was
invested on training -- with a resulting loss in productivity -- and the
company lost personnel.

"What we discovered is that there was a very large cultural impact on our
organization, in terms of training and lost personnel," said Mr.
Stikeleather. "You basically become your own systems integrator. These are
things we did not quite understand when we made the transition to Open
Systems."

The two sessions are part of the UNIX EXPO Seminar Series, which will
feature 56 conference sessions and 15 tutorials. The conference program
will open with a keynote address by James A. Cannavino, vice president and
general manager of personal systems of IBM Corporation. Mr. Cannavino will
discuss, "The Expanding Universe of UNIX," in his speech, at 1 p.m., on
Sept. 22.

UNIX EXPO will feature more than 275 exhibitors of computer hardware,
software and services for UNIX and Open Systems. More than 28,000
attendees are expected at the three-day event.
