LAGUNA HILLS, CA, Sept. 14, 1992--In a major expansion of its business
direction and corporate strategy, Network Software Associates, Inc. (NSA)
today entered the IBM AS/400 midrange computer connectivity market with
the announcement of the Elite/400 family of PC-to-AS/400 communications
products. This constitutes the largest set of new product announcements
ever introduced by the 12-year-old firm.

Five new software products were unveiled: Elite/400 for Windows,
Elite/400DSP for Windows, Elite/400 LAN Gateway, HLLAPI Toolkit for
Windows, and APPC Toolkit for Windows. Among the new offerings is a
PC-to-AS/400 file transfer facility, and the industry's first Windows
PC-to-AS/400 connectivity solution that eliminates the need to run IBM's
AS/400 Personal Computer Support (PCS/400) software on both AS/400 servers
and PC clients.

NSA is a leading supplier of PC to mainframe solutions. "Our expansion into
the midrange connectivity arena marks a major milestone for the company,"
said NSA Chairman Earl D. Jacobs. "Our focus has always been on IBM
customers with large mainframe-based Systems Network Architecture (SNA)
networks. With the rapidly-expanding market for AS/400 systems operating
as applications and network processors within corporate SNA networks, we
view this as a natural growth area. The AS/400 is the most successful
midrange computer of all time, with over 150,000 system already
installed."

While the Elite/400 family is NSA's first offering for the midrange
marketplace, it embodies fourth generation, APPC-based 5250 emulation
technology. The Elite/400 development team has an extensive track record
in the implementation of 5250 protocol solutions, and NSA is an industry
pioneer in APPC technology.

Elite/400 runs on IBM compatible PCs under Microsoft Windows. It lets PCs
access AS/400 applications and databases by emulating IBM's 5250 family of
terminals and printers. The software supports multiple sessions and AS/400
file transfers. It builds upon the extensive capabilities of IBM's PCS/400
software facility.

Elite/400DSP is a lower-priced version for users who do not need the full
complement of PCS/400 features. When communicating via Novell's NetWare
for SM Local Area Network (LAN) Gateway, Elite/ 400DSP is the only Windows
PC-to-AS/400 connectivity solution on the market today which eliminates
the need for IBM's PCS/400 software on the host and on the PCs.

"Many enterprise network customers want to use AS/400s as application
servers while continuing to use existing NetWare LANs for remote file
access, email, and other LAN based services", said NSA Director of Product
Marketing Russ Hertzberg. "Elite/400DSP with NetWare for SAA or the
Elite/400 LAN Gateway is an ideal solution for Windows users in this
environment. It delivers basic AS/400 application access, retains the
benefits of NetWare LAN services, and removes the system overhead and
administrative burden of PCS/400."

Both emulators were designed for ease of use, featuring automatic session
configuration, automatic font and window sizing, and a
productivity-enhancing ShortCuts facility for user-defined,
mouse-activated host functions. Both communicate over 802.2, SDLC and
twinax links, and LAN gateways such as NSA's Elite/400 LAN Gateway and
Novell's NetWare for SM Gateway.

The Elite/400 LAN Gateway can be used on Token-Ring, Ethernet, Arcnet, and
peer-based LANs. It lets multiple PCs share a single, economical link to
the AS/400 for client-server applications, supporting both Elite/ 400
clients and third-party emulator clients.

The HLLAPI Toolkit for Windows is an optional software development package
for rapid and easy creation of Windows interfaces to existing AS/400
applications using IBM's High-Level Language Application Programming
Interface (HLLAPI) and Microsoft's Visual BASIC.

The APPC Toolkit for Windows is a similar development package for use with
the APPC API for Microsoft Windows. Both toolkits can be used for
PC-to-AS/400 applications development via the Elite/400 family, or for
PC-to-mainframe applications development via NSA's DynaComm/Elite family
of 3270 and APPC software for Windows PCs.

"The PC-to-AS/400 products announced today will position NSA as a
significant competitor to the existing vendors," said Cindy Santisario,
senior research analyst for PC connectivity at IDC. "This announcement is
strengthened by NSA's commitment to AS/400 toolkits".

"With our 5250-protocol PC-to-midrange family joining our established
AdaptSNA and Elite families of 3270, APPC and RJE PC-to-mainframe
solutions, we now provide our SNA enterprise customers a single-source
solution," said NSA President and CEO Zak Kong. "Our open standards
approach now allows a single PC to concurrently access both AS/400s and
large System/370 mainframes using a variety of SNA protocols, data links,
LAN transports, and third party-gateways."

The Elite/400 family will be available for delivery starting October 1,
1992. Elite/400 for Windows has already been successfully test-marketed in
Europe since July under the brand name Tango.

Elite/400 for Windows is priced at $395 while Elite/400DSP for Windows is
$295. Both corporate and network licenses are offered. The Elite/400 LAN
Gateway ranges from $595 to $3,995. The HLLAPI for Windows and APPC for
Windows Toolkits are offered at $495 each.

Network Software Associates, Inc. develops, markets and supports a full
range of PC software and hardware connectivity products for IBM networking
environments. In addition to IBM, NSA is also a strategic partner of
NCR/AT&T. The company is headquartered at 39 Argonaut, Laguna Hills, CA
