SOLECTEK'S NEW FAX/DATA MODEMS FIRST FOR OFFICE AND FIELD

Optional OCR capabilities available for all units

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 21, 1992 - Solectek Corp., makers of the award-winning
Pocket FAX Modem, today introduced the Transportable 14.4/14.4 fax/data
modem -- a sleek, small external desktop modem with optional optical
character recognition (OCR) capabilities, which is the first designed
specifically to perform double duty on the desktop and in the field.

The Transportable 14.4/14.4 fax/data modem is about the size of an electric
razor -- measuring 1" by 3" by 5" and weighing less than four ounces.
Unlike other modem designs that ignore aesthetics, the Transportable
14.4/14.4 modem is encased in lacquered black plastic and has a stylized
tapered design that fits snugly into an accompanying, small desktop base.
Remove the modem from its desktop base and it's ready for any mobile use.

One of a family of new modems introduced today by Solectek, the
high-performance Transportable 14.4/14.4 modem sends and receives data and
faxes at 14,400 bits per second (bps). The others are the Transportable
96/96 modem, which sends and receives faxes and data at 9,600 bps, and the
economical Transportable 96/24 modem, which sends faxes at 9,600 bps,
receives faxes at 4,800 bps, and sends and receives data at 2,400 bps.
Optional OCR capabilities allow faxed text to be integrated into a word
processor for review and edit and are available for all models at an
additional cost. The Transportable modem family operates in
IBM-compatible, Windows and Macintosh environments.

"In the past, people who needed fax and data communications for their
desktop and portable computers were forced to buy separate modems, which
is expensive and redundant," said James DeBello, president and chief
executive officer of Solectek. "Now, with our Transportable family of
fax/data modems, they can buy one device to satisfy both needs."

All three modems are the same size and draw power from either a standard AC
wall plug or an internal 9-volt battery. Compatible with the Hayes
standard for data communications and the Group 3 and Class 1 and 2
standards for fax, each Transportable modem supports leading data
compression and error correction standards such as MNP 2-4, V.42, V.42bis
and MNP 5. Each modem connects to IBM-compatible, Windows and Macintosh
computers via a regular serial port.

All models in the Transportable family feature group broadcasting, call
logging and true background operation. The DOS-version features the
ability to send a fax from within any application without interruption.
Four LED lights, located on the front of the modem, illuminate power-on,
compatible carrier detect, peak high-speed operation, and low-battery
conditions. A speaker is also included to notify the user of the audio
dialing sequences during the initial portions of data and fax
communications.

Three Models for Different Needs

The Transportable 14.4/14.4 modem is the ideal choice for people who need
to transfer large files, such as those with detailed graphics and images.
While the native speed for the modem is 14,400 bps, it has an effective
speed of up to 57,600 bps when the data is compressed using the V.42bis
standard. Speed is important in data communications and faxing because of
the comparative high cost of telephone line times.

The Transportable 96/96 modem is Solectek's mid-range product, suitable for
people who send documents frequently and can benefit by the high speed.
Like the Transportable 14.4/14.4 modem, the mid-range Transportable 96/96
modem supports all key data compression and error checking standards in
hardware to assure high performance.

The Transportable 96/24 modem is priced the lowest, but provides comparable
features in both hardware and software, including compression and error
checking. This economical modem is best suited for people who don't need
high-speed capabilities in a fax/data modem. Pricing and Availability

Despite the advanced capabilities and portability of the Transportable
modem family, it is priced lower than most other brands that are
restricted to either desktop or portable computers. Suggested retail
prices are $599 for the Transportable 14.4/14.4 modem, $499 for the
Transportable 96/96 modem and $199 for the Transportable 96/24 modem. All
include Solectek's five year warranty and toll-free technical support.

All models will be available from leading distributors and retail stores in
October 1992.
