An upcoming upgrade of netOctopus, network management software for the
Macintosh was announced April 30, 1992 by MacVONK-USA. The upgrade is free
of charge to all registered users and is expected to ship before the end
of May.

NetOctopus 1.1 is the most powerful network management application for the
Macintosh. It provides an extensive array of functions for the internal
end-user support (Help Desk), Software Licensing/Auditing and Inventory
departments.

The following sheet outlines most of the feature additions for netOctopus
1.1. The most important areas are:

Apple Installer Scripts - NetOctopus now supports virtually all installer
scripts. This means that you can install or update complex applications
and System software across the network. Some of the scripts include
QuickMail, System 7 Tune Up, AppleShare 3.0, AppleTalk Remote Access,
etc.

Software Audit Report - Simply specify how many copies you legitimately
own of each application, driver, desk accessory, etc. and netOctopus
checks it against what is actually installed on the network.

Apple Events - A large quantity of standard and custom Apple Events have
been implemented. This means that you may use scripting tools such as
Frontier to write customized and routine operations. For instance, perform
an automated weekly network audit or detect users as they dial into a
network, etc.

AppleTalk Remote Access - AppleTalk Remote Access is built-in. Service
providers, consultants and others can now remotely administer a network by
opening an ARA connection file from within netOctopus.

Delays and Queues - The new version of netOctopus allows administrators
to perform multiple tasks unattended. When commands are scheduled in the
future, they are automatically entered into the command queue. This means
that administrators may schedule a System 7 Tune Up starting at 8:00 p.m.
and automatically Shut Down users' Macintoshes a few hours later.

The list of additions is quite extensive. If you would like to receive

Software Additions for netOctopus 1.1

1. User Software (InfoReporter)

Asset Management - Ten fields that can contain up to 40+ characters each to
retain information such as equipment serial numbers, phone extensions.
cost center codes, etc.

Multiple Volume Support - NetOctopus now scans all mounted SCSI volumes.

User Privacy - Users may designate up to twenty 'private' folders. These
folders are off-limits to the administrators.

2. Administrator Software (netOctopus)

Apple Installer Scrip - In addition to regular file installations,
netOctopus can now read Installer Scripts to perform more complex updates
or installations. Scripts include System 7 Tune-Up, QuickMail, AppleShare
3.0, Timbuktu, etc.

Software Audit Report - Verifies installed software against licensed
quantities. Simply enter the number of licensed copies of each application
and netOctopus will check it against what is actually present on the
network.

Apple Events - Use scripting tools such as Frontier to write customized
scripts. For instance, take inventory on a weekly basis, synchronize
server clocks regularly, detect Macintoshes when they dial into a network,
etc.

AppleTalk Remote Access - The Connect to Network command allows you to
connect to any network using your modem. Open a connection file, enter
your password and administer Macs remotely.

Delays - Schedule future events for unattended operation. For instance,
install the Tune Up starting at 7:00 p.m., Shut workstations down at 1:00
a.m. and send a descriptive message to networked users at 10:00 a.m. the
next day.

Serialization Scheme - No more serialized InfoReporters. The serialization
is controlled from within netOctopus. All the security is still in place
but the serial numbers are assigned by netOctopus rather than 'burnt' in
to the InfoReporter.

File Info - Standard Get Info (Finder) dialog is displayed for networked
files. This means that you can remotely define allocated application
memory and review the file size, creation and modification dates, version
numbers, etc.

Finder Restart/Shut Down - The user is asked if he/she wants to save
changes before shutting down or restarting just like the Finder).

Parameter RAM - Specify almost all PRAM settings such as sound, mouse
scaling, default boot volume, etc.

Chooser Name - Remotely define user's User/Owner and Macintosh names.
Rename Files - Any file may be renamed remotely. AppleTalk Parameters -
User definable time-out settings.

Additional Information Items - Active EtherNet Address, Network Connection
Type, Disk Drive Type, Selected Printer Type, Selected Printer Name,
Background Printing, File Sharing (System 7 only), Macintosh Name (System
7 only).

Delete Multiple Files - Multiple files may be deleted at the same time.
