Roadside Resources 2.0 The BMUG Internet Collection Welcome to the BMUG Roadside Resources CD-ROM! HOW IS THIS CD-ROM ORGANIZED? (Very well, thank you for asking.) This CD-ROM is divided into 5 main parts: FAQs and Information - Here you'll find information about the Internet, from the Internet, including FAQs (Frequently Asked Question and Answer lists), lists of good stuff on the 'net, indices of Internet service providers, help on the UNIX operating system and more. The Software - This folder contains tools for accessing the Internet. We've included tools for using the Internet via SLIP or PPP (for graphical Internet access), command line interfaces and even UUCP (Unix to Unix Copy). The software you can use depends on your Internet service. We strongly recommend getting SLIP or PPP service if you can - it will let you access the World Wide Web with MacWeb, Anarchie and Eudora - easy-to-use graphical programs. Book and Magazine Excerpts - Here you're find loads of useful information culled from over two dozen Internet and Macintosh books and magazines. We've included at least one chapter or article from every source. Complete Books - In this folder you'll find the complete text of six Internet books. Some, like the Jargon File, are in the public domain. Others, like the Hacker Crackdown and eMarketing, are copyrighted text whose authors have graciously allowed us to put on this CD-ROM. Others, like the Online World Handbook, are shareware. BMUG Essentials - Here you'll find information about BMUG and basic utilities. WHERE SHOULD I LOOK FIRST? Well, that depends on what you want to do... If you want to learn about the Internet, start with the EFF's Guide to the Internet (which you'll find the <> folder.) Then, read anything in the Book and Magazine Excerpts folder that you find interesting. Read a chapter from the Internet Explorer Kit for Macintosh, or chapter one of Your Internet Consultant for some Internet basics. If you want to get connected to the Internet, start by installing MacTCP plus MacPPP or InterSLIP. You'll find all three in "The Software" folder. (MacTCP should be copied to your Control Panels Folder. Config PPP should also go in your Control Panels, and the PPP extension should go in your Extensions folder.) Configuring MacTCP/MacPPP/InterSLIP can be tricky: your Internet service provider will tell you how to configure the software for their system. If you have a command-line Internet account, fire up the shareware program ZTerm to dial in. If you don't have Internet access, look in the The Software->Access Deals for BMUG members folder for two deals from Internet service providers. The Internet Access Company provides a reduced monthly rate for BMUG members, and Northcoast Internet offers free startup and one month of free Internet access for members. If you want to learn how to create web pages with hypertext markup language, look in <Using HTML>>, where you'll find several tutorials and articles on the subject. If you want to access some of the finest BBSes on the Internet, get yourself a SLIP or PPP account then check out <BBS Software->FirstClass->Internet Settings files>>. Here you'll find <> pre-programmed settings files for accessing Internet-connected FirstClass BBSes. If you want to comment on this CD-ROM, we'd love to hear what you have to say. Suggestions for the next edition are especially appreciated. Send your electronic mail to roadside@northcoast.com. SPECIAL THANKS!! BMUG wishes to thank these shareware authors for writing such great programs. BMUG also strongly encourages the user to pay the shareware fees for shareware that you use. Paying your shareware fees is a way of supporting these authors for all their hard work and talent. Aaron Giles Adobe, Inc. Alan Steremberg Apple Computer, Inc.
