This file last modified 8/20/84. Version 2,07 of Multi-Link has been copy protected by a very simple, but effective, method. A normal DOS diskette is formatted for 40 tracks, but most diskette drives can reach out to track 42! Now track 41 on the Multi-Link diskette is not formatted at all, but the 42 track has been formatted and contains data. In sectors 3 of track 42 are two ASCII digits in the first 2 bytes, and the rest of the sectors is spaces, or hex"20". The two ASCII bytes are the last two numbers in the serial number of your copy of MultiLink. In order to copy the diskette and run mlink.com sucessfully, track 42 must also be copied. I have modified the DOS 2.0 version of diskcopy.com so that 42 tracks will be copied. To make your new version of DISKCOPY.COM, place DEBUG.COM and DISKCOPY.COM on a blank disk in the default drive, and type do the following EXACTLY as shown! This patch is for DOS 2.xx Version of DISKCOPY.COM. 0. DEBUG 1. N DISKCOPY.COM 2. L 3. E 211 2A 4. E 355 2A 5. E 35C 2A 6. N CPYMLINK.COM 7. W 8. Q 9.CPYMLINK A: B: 10. that is it !!! If you have never used the io-redirection features of DOS 2.0 here is your chance. Put the following lines in a seperate file called FIXDSKCP.ARF. And issue the command "DEBUG COM, DISKCOPY.COM, AND FIXDSKCP.ARF IN THE DEFAULT DRIVE!! *************************do not include this line******** N DISKCOPY.COM L E 211 2A E 355 2A E 35C 2A N CPYMLINK.COM W Q *************************do not include this line******* Now do step 10 above. Note that the Multi-Link diskette is single-sided, 8 sectors per track. If you wish to use double sided drives, simply copy the Multi-Link diskette with your new version of diskcopy.com, then FORMAT the diskette double-sided, 9-sector! Since FORMAT.COM only formats 40 tracks, track 42 isn't damaged. Now, with the origional Multi-Link diskette in A: and the diskcopied-then-formatted diskette in B:, do a "COPY A:*.* B:" What's tht,t Bunky? You only have one drive? DISKCOPY is a bummer? Well, try this: FORMAT version 2.0 contains the number of tracks to be formatted at offset 0EFAh. It should now be 28h. Change that byte to 2Ah in a COPY of FORMAT that you have renamed to FORMAT42. Now format a diskette with "/8/S" as a para- meter. (No need to do it single sided). With a disk-zapping utility, look for Cylinder 29H, Head 0, Sector 3, Cluster 146. Replace all 128 bytes with 20H except the first two which MUST be the last two digits of your MLINK serial number. If in doubt, look at the original (carefully!) with your zapper. Thats all! Now you can reformat the diskette as a 9 sector if you like (using the original FORMAT program, of course), and COPY the MultiLink distribution disk to your new warm puppy. But, BUT! You say what's a Zapper? Well, that's an exercise left to the student, as my old math prof used to say. Mark A. Sehorne...et al y what's a Zapper? Well, that's an exercise left to the student, as my old m
