===================== IMPORTANT INFORMATION ===================== This file contains information that updates, clarifies, or emphasizes information found in the User's Guide (GUIDE.TXT). Please see the User's Guide for complete details on using Magic Desk. INSTALLING MAGIC DESK: Magic Desk is distributed in a compressed format and cannot be run directly as is. You must first install it on your hard drive. To install it: 1. When you see the C> prompt (or a similar prompt that identifies your hard drive), insert the program disk in disk drive A (or B). 2. Type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL) and press the ENTER key. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen. (Magic Desk may also be installed from your hard drive if you have already copied the compressed files onto your hard drive.) STARTING MAGIC DESK: After installation, the command to start Magic Desk is MAGIC. This runs the MAGIC.BAT file that kicks things off. Do not start the program with the MDMAIN command. Running MDMAIN.EXE directly will appear to work fine until you try to launch a program from Magic Desk. At that point, the program will simply terminate and leave you at the DOS prompt. USING MICROSOFT WINDOWS ICONS: To use a Windows icon in Magic Desk you must first read it into Painter, the icon editor built into Magic Desk. After reading the icon and making any desired changes to it, write it back to disk without the ICO extension. Magic Desk will create a new icon file with an ICN extension, then you can use it. NOTE: Magic Desk includes 30 sample icons that have a ICN extension. These are already in Magic Desk format and do not need to be imported through Painter. The registered version of Magic Desk includes a collection of 400 Windows icons, as well as a utility that will convert all the Windows icons in a specified directory to Magic Desk format in a single pass. RUNNING BATCH FILES: If you are running a batch file (a file with a BAT extension) from Magic Desk, be sure you have set the Batch File button for that program to YES. If the Batch File button is set to NO, Magic Desk will not reappear after the batch file is finished. REARRANGING ICON BUTTONS: You can change the arrangement of the icon buttons on the screen by dragging them around with the mouse or keyboard. See the User's Guide for details. After you've put the buttons fairly close to the position, you can press ALT+A to have Magic Desk line them up neatly in the new order. RUNNING DOS 6.0 MEMMAKER: If you have commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to automatically run Magic Desk when you turn on your system (as described in the User's Guide), you may need to temporarily remove the commands while running the MEMMAKER program included with DOS 6.0. SEE UTILITY: This disk includes the SEE file viewing program. It is a very useful utility for viewing and printing text files (such as this README.TXT file). The SEE program was created by Pinnacle Software and is used by permission. For more information about Pinnacle Software, please see the text file AMAZE.TXT.
