Directions for use:

Cryptogram - A writing in cipher or code; a cryptograph. (Webster's New
Universal Unabridged Dictionary)

Your challenge is to decipher the short messages which will be encrypted
and displayed to you. They have been encoded by replacing the correct
letter with a letter chosen at random from the alphabet. The replacement
letter may in fact be the same letter by the way, but probably is a
different letter.

You will see letters on the board which don't make sense as they are
written, yet are in the form of an sentence in English. Clicking on one
of the encoded letters will bring up an entry box which you can use to
guess at the correct letter which this coded letter represents. Once
you enter your guess, it will be placed beneath the coded letter on the
board.

The score you receive for each puzzle completed is dependant on:
(a) the ammount of time you take to complete it,
(b) the number of unique letters in a particular phrase and
(c) its length (inversely proportional).

Some specific rules:

1.) If you attempt to define a coded letter with a letter which you have
already chosen for another, you will be asked about this. Only one letter
may represent or be represented by another.

2.) When you change a guess, you will be asked, just to be sure.

3.) You can clear a guess by clicking on the coded letter and entering a
space for your guess of its value.

4.) All guesses can be cleared by selecting "Clear All Guesses" from under
the "Games" pull-down.

5.) There are no numerals in the phrases used. All numbers are spelled out,
for example; 8 would be written out as "eight".

Registering the Cryptogram Challenge:

Why register?

First, is the program useful? Does it perform a task that you find valuable?
Of course you'll get that good feeling that comes with "doing the right thing",
but you'll also get fast responses to questions via e-mail. Additionally, you
may get the occasional free upgrade.

Of course you'll also have the program start without the opening screen and
you'll receive 3 more cryptogram databases; bible quotes, dictionary
definitions, and chemistry... all very difficult.

Pricing.

Whether you purchase through the mail, via check or money order and have the
program mailed back, or register online with a credit card or by other means,
the price will be the same; $14.95. Initially we tried to charge a base price and
adding charges for shipping and disks, or online registration fees. Finally (a)
it became too complicated and (b) one couldn't actually purchase the program
for the base price anyway (unless they came here and picked it up personally).
