	PC Blackboard Overview

PC Blackboard is a presentation utility that can be used to display
either a collection of images that have been pre-prepared for use or
individual images that need to be accessed in an ad-hoc manner. This can be
done in both a local and remote setting. If you are connected to another PC
via a modem, whatever happens on either screen is displayed on the other
screen. The PC Blackboard utility can be used very easily in a boardroom
situation or in conjunction with a videoconferencing system to enhance your
meeting. PC Blackboard employs a toolbox to load the presentation, sequence
through the slides, select an individual slide from the middle of the
presentation, as well as, rudimentary tools that can be used for annotation
in a blackboard setting or directly on top of your presentation slides. PC
Blackboard was designed to be very small so that it can be run in conjunction
with just about any other program. If the user wishes to run a pre-prepared
presentation during their Blackboard session, the presentation must first be
created using Serial Solutions EditShow utility.

	Startup

When the user initiates PC Blackboard, the logo is displayed and
will remain on the screen until the system is initialized.

Once the initialization is complete, the viewing screen and the
toolbox will be displayed. The viewing screen can be sized to your
preferences. Use the maximize, minimize or window sizing to create the
viewing area that is most desirable to you.

The other window that is displayed on the screen at startup is the
toolbox. The toolbox contains the icons that are used as controls for
PC Blackboard.

This manual will be presented by describing each icon in the toolbox
in detail. The toolbox is comprised of eleven icons that each serve a
different purpose in the operation of the Blackboard utility. The icons are:
Previous Slide, Next Slide, Select Slide, Load Presentation, Change Tool,
Tool Attributes, Undo, Blackboard, General Configuration, Modem Setup, Call,
Hangup, File Transfer, About, and Exit. Each icon will be described in
detail below.

	Previous Slide

The previous slide icon is for moving backwards in your presentation
by one slide. Selecting previous will load the image that is immediately
preceding the slide that is currently on the screen. If there is no
presentation loaded or if you are at the first slide in the presentation,
selecting previous slide will have no effect. If you are at the first slide
in your presentation but you have brought up either the blackboard or an
ad-hoc image that is not in your presentation, selecting the previous slide
icon will display the first image in your presentation.
If you are connected to a remote location and the presentation exists
on their machine, this will then access the image immediately preceding the
  slide that is currently chosen.

Note: If you have a presentation loaded, you can select the previous
slide by pressing the F3 key on the keyboard.

	Next Slide

The next slide icon is for moving ahead in your presentation by one
slide. Selecting next slide will load the image that is immediately following
the slide that is currently on the screen. If there is no presentation loaded
or if you are at the last slide in the currently loaded presentation,
selecting next slide will have no effect. If you are at the last slide in
your presentation, selecting the next slide icon will display the first image
in your presentation.
If you are connected to a remote location and the presentation exists
on their machine, this will then access the image immediately following the
slide that is currently chosen.

Note: If you have a presentation loaded, you can select the next
slide by pressing the F4 key on the keyboard.

	Select Image

The select image icon is for loading any image that is currently in
your presentation regardless of the position of the slide in the presentation.
The select image icon will bring up a directory of the slides in your
presentation. Each slide is in a thumbnail format so that you can pick out
which slide you wish to load at a glance. Below the slide viewing area is a
slide bar which allows the user to scroll through their presentation. There
will only be a scroll bar if the current presentation has more than four (4)
slides. Below the scroll bar are four buttons: "Cancel", "Load First Slide",
"Load Slide" and "Load From Disk".
If you are connected to a remote location and the presentation exists
on their machine, this will then load the selected image on the remote as
  well.

Cancel - Selecting the Cancel button will return you to your
presentation without changing your position in the presentation.

Load First Slide - Selecting Load First Slide will load the first
image in the presentation. This option is very helpful if you are in the
middle or the end of your presentation and you wish to re-start. The current
slide position will now be the beginning of the presentation.

Load Slide - The Load Slide button will load the currently highlighted
image. The highlighted image will be the one that has the dark gray band
around the thumbnail sketch. The selected image will be displayed and your
presentation position to the currently selected slide. You can move the
highlight box to the slide of your choice by using the window slider along
the bottom of the window and clicking once on the image once it comes into
view.

Note: Double clicking on an image in the window will automatically
load the image that was selected.

Load From Disk - Selecting the Load From Disk button will bring up
the file dialog box (See the section following on loading a slide or
presentation). This option is very helpful in loading an image that is not
pre-loaded in the presentation but may be relevant to the discussion. Once
you change the screen that contains an image that was loaded from disk (Next
icon, Previous Icon or Blackboard), the image will need to be re-loaded from
the disk.

	Load A Presentation/Image

The load a presentation/image icon allows the user to load the
presentation or image that they wish to view. Selecting the load icon will
bring up a standard windows file dialog box. The user is prompted to select
or enter the presentation or image that they wish to load.
If you are connected to a remote location, this will load the desired
file on the remote (as long as it resides on their PC also).

Presentations - If the user decides to load a presentation, they must
either highlight the file or type in the file name. Once a valid presentation
is selected, the presentation will be automatically loaded with the first
slide being displayed in the image viewing area. The only presentation file
type that can be loaded is a .prs file (a file type defined by Serial
Solutions), which would have been created using the EditShow utility
(supplied with the distribution diskette).

Images - If the user decides to load an image, they must either
highlight the file or type in the file name. Once a valid presentation is
selected, the image will be automatically loaded and displayed in the image
viewing area. The only file types that are currently supported by PC
Blackboard are .PCX and .BMP.

	Close Presentation

The close presentation button will close up a previously opened
presentation and delete all memory used by the presentation. After the
presentation has been closed the main viewing windows title bar will return
to the standard PC Blackboard title bar.
If you are connected to a remote location and the presentation exists
on their machine, this will close the presentation on the remote PC.

Drawing Tools - Pencil And Pointer

The Drawing tools icons are used like a toggle. The tool that is
currently showing is the tool that is active. To change to the other tool
simply select the tool button and the icon will change to the new tool.

Pencil - The pencil is the drawing tool. The cursor will be a pencil
that will move around the screen. When you wish to write on the screen,
simply press the left mouse button and move the mouse. The pencil will write
with the currently selected color and line width. (see the section on tool
attributes to change drawing color and line width). To stop drawing, release
the mouse button and the cursor will now move freely around the screen.
If you are connected to a remote location, all the drawing will be
displayed at the remote location as well..

Pointer - The pointer will allow the user to highlight something on
the screen. The pointer cursor moves around the screen like the default
windows cursor. When you reach an area of the screen you wish to point, press
the left mouse button and the cursor will become an enlarged pointer. There
are no pointer attributes, the pointer is just a white cursor with a black
outline. To change the cursor back to the small arrow, simply release the
mouse button.
If you are connected to a remote location, the pointer will be
displayed on the remote PC as well.

	Tool Attributes

The tool attributes button allows the user to select new attributes
for the drawing tool. At the present time, the only tool that allows its
attributes to be changed is the pencil. When you select the tool attributes
button, a menu will pop on to the screen.

The tool attributes menu has the icon of the currently selected tool
in the upper left corner of the menu.

Drawing Color - The first selectable item on the menu is the tool's
drawing color. Directly to the right of the drawing color button is a sample
color chip of the currently selected color. If the tool cannot have its color
changed, the drawing color button and the color chip will be grayed. To
change the drawing color, select the drawing color button. A color selection
menu will pop onto the screen. This menu lets the user select the color that
they wish to use for drawing.

The current drawing color chip is shown in the small box to the left
of the menu. The entire current color palette is shown at the right. To
select a new color the user only has to position the cursor over one of the
colors on the palette and select the left mouse button. Once the user selects
the new color, it will be shown in the color chip box at the left of the menu.
To keep the newly selected color, select the "OK" button at the bottom of the
menu. To return to the tool attribute menu without changing the color, press
the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the menu.

Line Width - The second selectable item on the menu is the tool's
line width. Directly to the right of the line width button is a sample line
width in the currently selected color. If the tool cannot have its line width
changed, the line width button and the line width sample will be grayed. To
change the line width, select the line width button. A line width selection
menu will pop onto the screen. This menu lets the user select the line width
that they wish to use for drawing.

The current line width size chip is shown in the small box to the left
of the menu. The line width sample is shown to the right of the size, in the
current drawing color. Below the line segment is a slider bar that the user
will use to select the line width. To adjust the line width, the user selects
on either of the arrows, or slides the slider up and down the bar. The line
width will adjust itself as the user moves the positioning. To keep the newly
selected line width, the user would select the "OK" button at the bottom of
the menu. To return to the tool attribute menu without changing the color,
the user would select the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the menu.

Fill - The fill option is not currently implemented with any of the
existing tools.

To keep the new tool attributes the user should select the "OK"
button at the bottom left of the tool attribute menu. Selecting "OK" will
send the user back to the main drawing screen with the newly selected
attributes as the current configuration.

To return to the main viewing screen without changing any of the tool
attributes, the user should select the "Cancel" button.

Note: The user can select the tool attribute menu from the main
viewing screen at any time by selecting the F2 key on the keyboard. The tool
attribute menu will represent the currently selected tool.

	Undo

The Undo button allows the user to take away any annotation that may
be covering up an image. Selecting the undo button will clear all drawing on
the screen but will leave any image that was loaded (either presentation
image or ad-hoc image).
If you are connected to a remote location, this will undo all
annotation.

	Blackboard

The blackboard will allow the user to clear the screen so that they
can draw something on a blank screen. If the user has a presentation loaded,
they can press the next or previous buttons to bring up the next or previous
slide from the blackboard. To select the slide that was previously on the
screen, the user should the select a slide button and go to any slide they
wish. If the user had an ad-hoc image loaded (not part of a presentation),
they will have to re-load the slide.
If you are connected to a remote location, this will put the remote
location into blackboard mode as well.

	General Configuration

The general configuration menu allows the user to configure the
toolbox as they wish as well as add a traditional windows menu if they would
prefer. If the user selects the general configuration box, a general
configuration menu will pop onto the screen.

ToolBox Configuration - The general configuration menu gives the user
three choices for toolbox selection. The first is the default choice of
horizontal. The horizontal menu lays flat, with the buttons going across the
screen. The second choice is a vertical toolbox. The vertical toolbox is a
single row of buttons that move down the screen. The third choice of toolbox
configuration is user defined. If the user selects the user defined type of
toolbox, they must select which icons will be in the tool box. To select the
icons for the tool box, the user should select the define tool box button at
the bottom of the Toolbox configuration group. The define toolbox button will
be unavailable if the user does not select the user defined toolbox radio
button.

If the user selects the define tool box button, a user defined menu
will pop onto the screen. An example of this menu is shown below.

The define toolbox menu allows the user to select the exact toolbox
that they wish to use. To select or de-select icons from the menu, the user
should select the check boxes of the corresponding icons and they will appear
or disappear from the user defined menu.

At the bottom of the define toolbox menu is a Preview Menu check box.
Checking this box will give the user a preview of the toolbox they are
creating. De-selecting this box will take the preview toolbox off the screen.
The preview toolbox is an active window and can be moved to any position on
the screen. None of the preview toolbox buttons will actually carry out their
function however. To the right of the preview menu box is a toolbox
positioning group. This set of radio buttons will put your custom toolbox in
either a horizontal or vertical layout. This will also be reflected if the
preview menu box is selected.

Once the user creates the toolbox they wish to use, they can save the
new toolbox and return to the general configuration menu by selecting the "OK"
button at the bottom left of the define toolbox menu.

Note: If the user selects "OK" with no icons defined the toolbox will
automatically revert to the default horizontal style toolbox with all the
icons included.

Note2: If the user creates a toolbox that does not include either the
stop icon or the general configuration icon, the only way to re-create the
toolbox is to use the system defined menu which is accessed by selecting the
top left box of the main viewing area. The last entry is Default toolbox.
Selecting this item will give you a default, horizontal toolbox.

If the user wishes to return to the general configuration menu without
changing their previous menu selection or return to their previous selection,
they should select the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the define toolbox
menu. This will return the user to the general configuration menu without
changing the toolbox configuration.

Menu Present - The Menu Present check box in the middle of the general
configuration menu will toggle the presence of a standard windows menu at the
top of the main viewing area.

The menu basically mirrors the functionality of the toolbox. The
File menu will allow the user to go to previous slide, go to next slide,
select a slide, load an image or close a presentation. The Tools option will
allow the user to change a tool's attributes, undo a screen or go to the
blackboard. The General option will allow the user to call the general
configuration menu, call the about box or exit the program. If the menu is
present, the user can call all the same functions from the menu as they can
from the toolbox.

If the user wishes to save the configurations set in the general
configuration menu, they should select the "OK" button at the bottom of the
menu and they will be returned to the main viewing area with their selections
reflected in the configuration of the system.

If the user wishes to return to the main viewing area with the
selections they had coming into the general configuration and disregard any
changes they have made, they should select the "Cancel" button at bottom of
the menu.

	Modem Setup

This option allows the user to setup his/her modem. It has five
components: Com Port, Baud Rate, Modem Type, Setup Modem, and Initialize.

The Com Port value can be between 1 and 4. Check your manual if you
do not know which com port your modem is connected to. Just select the
appropriate Port.

The baud rate is the speed at which the data is transferred. The
higher the baud rate, the quicker the transfer. Check your modem manual to
find the fastest speed at which your modem can operate. Currently, the user
can choose from 1200 bps up to 56000 bps. Select the appropriate speed.

The Modem Type is the specific kind of modem which is in the users PC.
PC Blackboard currently supports 118 specific modems. If your modem is not
listed, check your manual to see if it suggests a similar modem type which
does appear. If it does not, you can either select Hayes Compatible (if your
modem is Hayes compatible) or use the Setup Modem option to add your modem to
the list. (Check your modem manual for specific requirements and then look
at the Setup Modem selection below.)

PC Blackboard also provides for a Null Modem connection. This is
when you have two PCs connected by a cable.

Finally, we also encourage the use of the AT&T Paradyne DataPort
modem. This provides the ability to do both voice and data on a single
telephone line.

The Setup Modem option allows the user to add a modem the modem list
if his/her modem type does not already exist in the list. It is also used to
change the initialization string, dial prefix, answer command, and/or hangup
command.

Finally, the Initialize button allows the user to initialize the
modem once he/she has made all the appropriate selections. Once this button
is selected, the user will get a message that PC Blackboard is attempting to
initialize. If it initializes correctly, the user will be notified. If it
fails, the user will see that the initialization timed-out. This usually
means that the modem is either not turned on or the correct com port was not
chosen.

	Call

The Call option allows the user to connect to a remote PC. If the
Null Modem type is selected, PC Blackboard will attempt to connect on its own.
However, if a true modem type is selected, the user will need to input the
number to be called. The user can dial in two ways. First, he/she can input
it manually with the displayed key pad. Just enter the number like you were
dialing a phone, or you can type directly from the keyboard. Then hit the
dial button. The comma is used if you need a delay after a particular number,
such as dialing a "9" to get out of a PBX system. The second way is to go to
the phone book (the bottom right icon) and select the desired remote location
(see the phone book section below).

The Clear button will clear the current phone number.

The Cancel button will return the user to the main toolbox.

The Phone Book allows the user to save specific information about
sites that are called frequently. The phone book allows the user to save a
person's or company's name, audio number, data number, modem speed, and a
comment field. The audio number is for the user, it serves no purpose to the
call function. The data number is the number which will be dialed when a
particular record is selected. The modem speed cane either be set to a
specific speed or to "Default". "Default" means it will use the speed
currently chosen, otherwise it will setup the modem to the specified speed of
the record chosen. The comment field allows the user to make a note about
this particular person or company.
If the user wishes to create a new record, select the New button and
enter the information. Then select Save to save the new record. If you wish
to delete a record, select the desired record in the phone search and select
the Delete button. Make sure you hit Save if you wish this change to be
permanent.
The Dial button will automatically dial the site that is currently
selected in the phone search box. The Cancel button will return the user to
the Dial box.

	Hangup

This does just as you would think. If you are connected to a remote
PC, this will disconnect the call.

	File Transfer

File Transfer allows the user to send a file to a remote PC. Once
this option is selected, the user will be asked to select a file. Once a
file has been selected, PC Blackboard will attempt to transfer the file to
the remote PC with the XMODEM protocol. An information box will appear
listing the name of the file being sent, as well as the size of the file in
bytes. It also shows the percentage of the complete transfer. That is, it
will begin at 0 percent and increase as each block is sent. Thus, at 100
percent, the entire file has been sent and received. This box also lists the
number of bytes and blocks transmitted, as well as an error count. The error
count tells the user if the program is having trouble sending the data to the
remote PC.
NOTE: the file will be saved at the remote PC in current working
directory. If the remote user wishes to have it saved in a
specific location, he/she should change to that directory before
	      the transmission begins.

	About

The About box is used for getting the most current Copyright and
version information about the PC Blackboard program. Selecting the about box
will bring up a simple dialog box that lists all the current program
information.

	Exit

The exit option is used for leaving the PC Blackboard utility.
Selecting the exit icon will bring up a dialog box that will ask the user if
he/she would like to exit the program or not.

If the user selects "Yes", PC Blackboard will close up all opened
files and return you to the Windows presentation manager. If the user selects
"No" or "Cancel", the user will be returned to the PC Blackboard main viewing
area.

The PC Blackboard Image Viewing Area

The PC Blackboard image viewing area is the main window of the
application. If a presentation is currently loaded, the title bar of the
image viewing area will tell the user the programs name and version number,
as well as, the name of the slide, and the position of the slide in the
presentation.

The main viewing window is just like any window in that it can be
moved or sized into any location the viewer chooses, for optimal presentation
effect.

When the user exits the system, all current settings are saved for
the next session. This includes toolbox and menu configuration, current tool
and tool attribute, as well as the image viewing area positioning and toolbox
positioning. The user can set the PC Blackboard system back to its default
state by deleting the BLACKBRD.INI file that is located in the directory that
PC Blackboard is being run from.

	Function Key Assignments

PC Blackboard does have a couple of function key assignments that can
be used as shortcuts to the toolbox or system menu. The function key
assignments are described below.

F1 - ToolBox Toggle. The toolbox toggle will allow the user to hide
the toolbox and, when appropriate, bring it back. The primary use for this is
in a standard presentation format. The toolbox can be hidden so that it does
not cover up the image (if the image is full screen). The toolbox can then be
brought back if a new tool is needed.

F2 - Tool Attribute Menu. The tool attribute menu function key will
bring up the menu, which allows you to change the tools attributes. The
primary use for this key is to allow you to change tool attributes (color and
line width) without having to go through the toolbox. This comes in handy if
you have the toolbox hidden, and you are only using the pen for screen
drawing.

F3 - Previous Slide. The previous slide key emulates the previous
slide button on the toolbox. The primary use for the previous slide key is to
allow you to run through your presentation easily if the toolbox is hidden
from the screen.

F4 - Next Slide. The previous slide key emulates the previous slide
button on the toolbox. The primary use for the previous slide key is to allow
you to run through your presentation easily if the toolbox is hidden from the
screen.

	PC Blackboard Error Messages

The following is a list of the errors that can occur in the PC
Blackboard program. The error is listed followed by a description of what the
problem could be.

Error Loading Presentation File - Not Loaded - This error will occur
if the user tries to load an invalid presentation file. The file could be
invalid due to either a corrupt data file or the file may not be compatible
with the Serial Solution's presentation file format. Try to load the file in
EditShow to determine if the file is compatible.

Error Loading .BMP File - Not Loaded - This error will occur if the
file that is being loaded by the user is not a .BMP file that is compatible
with the defined standard of that file format.

Error Loading .PCX File - Not Loaded - This error will occur if the
file that is being loaded by the user is not a .PCX file that is compatible
with the defined standard of that file format.

Presentation File Was Not Found - This error will occur if the user
tries to enter the path and file name of the presentation file in the dialog
box. The easiest way to get past this error is to locate the file by searching
with the file dialog box, and loading it through selection. You can also
double check the path name and file name and try to enter the name again.

Error Opening Presentation File - This error usually occurs if there
is an error in the data file. You should backup all files that are important
in the event of this error occurring. You may have to go back to the EditShow
utility to repair the problem, and try again. Another possible cause for this
error is there are not enough file handles available for the file. You may
try and increase the file handles defined in the CONFIG.SYS file.

Error Reading Presentation File - This error will come from Windows.
This error can occur if there is a error in the file or, there is not enough
memory available on your system. To solve this problem, you may have to
increase the amount of memory on your system.

Error Closing Presentation File - This error will come from a Windows
error. The error usually occurs because of a problem in memory. If you get
this error you may want to close the program, exit from Windows and
re-initialize your system. This initialization should clear up this problem.

Error Allocating Memory - Aborting Load - This error occurs while the
system is setting up the internal structure for the presentation. The error is
due to the fact that there is not enough memory to hold the memory needed to
be resident for the presentation. The only way to resolve this error is
increase the amount of memory in your system.

Error Creating Storage For Slide - This error will occur while you
are progressing through your presentation. This error indicates that your
system is running low on memory, due to the size of the image that is being
loaded, there is not enough memory to handle it. The only way to remedy this
problem is to increase the amount of memory that is available to the program.

Slide Determined To Be Invalid - This error will occur if an
individual slide in a presentation is invalid. The cause of this error is
usually a corruption of the data has taken place. The way to fix this error
is to edit the presentation in the EditShow utility.

Presentation File Was Invalid - This error will generally occur if the
presentation that is being loaded has been determined to be incompatible with
Serial Solution's presentation file format. PC Blackboard will only recognize
presentations that have been created with EditShow.

Error Releasing Slide - Not Released - This message is more
informative for the user. The message indicates that a problem has occurred
in memory and the memory that is being used is not getting released. If you
get this message, you should exit the program, and enter again to initialize
the system.

Error Constructing Image - This error message will cause the loading
of the slide to fail. This message indicates that the header for the image
has become corrupted. The best thing to do when you get this error is to use
the EditShow utility to repair the presentation file.

Unable To Display Image - This message usually occurs when an image
