INTRODUCTION
The "RSI-Manager" system is designed to prevent and effectively treat RSI
(Repetitive Strain Injury), also called OOS (Occupational Overuse
Syndrome) and CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).

It incorporates many years' research and trials by the world's leading
experts in this field.
It is a Total "Holistic" system. Other products mostly address just one
or two aspects of the causes of RSI (eg wrist-rest, rest-breaks,
keyboards, ergonomics, etc). We have carried out extensive evaluations of
most other systems, and are confident in saying that The RSI-Manager is
the only system that covers ALL aspects in a totally integrated system.

It has also proven very effective in preventing other VDU related
illnesses such as:
  * Eye strain
  * Fatigue
  * Headaches
  * Back pain

The proof is in the results, and The RSI-Manager has consistently
achieved better results than any other method.

"PEDIGREE"
The RSI-Manager system is based on the work done by the Occupational
Safety and Health Service, of the New Zealand Department of labour.

This project brought together many of the world's leading acknowledged
experts in this field, and is based on 7 years development and trials by
these specialists.
The publications resulting from this project are now being accepted
throughout the world as definitive works on the prevention and treatment
of RSI.
This "RSI-Manager" system incorporates all the features developed in this
project.

Those involved in the system's development and trials are:
- Dr R.D. Wigley, MB, ChB, FRCP, FRACP, FACRM
   practicing occupational physician
- Dr B.L. Blake, MB, ChB, FACOM practicing occupational physician
- Mr F.W. Darby, BSc (Hons), MSc (ergonomics)
scientist specialising in ergonomics, OSH, DOL, NZ
- Mrs R. McInnes, NZ Trade Certification Board, Typing and Shorthand
- Ms P. Harding, Sub-editor, Wellington Newspapers Ltd
- Mr D. Brown, Group Occupational Health Centre, Sydney, Australia

Plus *numerous* other occupational health professionals and international
contributors have, over the years, evaluated the system and provided
valuable feedback and recommendations.

Some publications and regulatory codes resulting from this work (and
which The RSI-Manager incorporates) are:
- "Occupational Overuse Syndrome, Treatment and Rehabilitation:
   A Practitioners' Guide"
- "The Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Visual Display
   Units"
- "Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992"

The RSI-Manager software/system itself has been trialed extensively over
a 3 year period by many individuals, plus large and small corporations
(references and testimonials available on request). It has been
responsible for reducing pain in many workers, and getting many people
back to work where other methods have been unsuccessful.

To sum up: Over a period of some years, many keyboard workers who were
"crippled" with RSI have been got back to work (and fairly quickly)
through using this system. It utilises a gentle "holistic" approach, with
no brutal surgery, splints or drugs required.

What can we say? ... it works.

TESTIMONIAL
"I first contracted RSI in August 1990. I underwent several forms of
treatment which did not result in a cure.
In February 1993 through my new doctor, I discovered The RSI-Manager and
found it was valuable in all important aspects in keeping the RSI at bay.
Since changing jobs recently, I have been unable to use the RSI-Manager
on my current machine as it is an ancient word processor. As a result, I
have had recurrences of RSI.
I am very much looking forward to the day when I will once again be able
to benefit from using the program again.
I feel that the program should be a compulsory part of any computer
system, and feel that this would prevent people from contracting RSI.
I have no hesitation in recommending the RSI-Manager system."

Lynette Birnie, Personal Assistant to the General Manager, Prudential
Life, Christchurch, New Zealand.

This testimonial is very typical of the many we have received.

WHAT IS REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY?
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) is a collective term for a range of
conditions, including injury, characterised by discomfort or persistent
pain in muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It is also known as OOS
(Occupational Overuse Syndrome), CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) and
Tendonitis amongst other names.
Most computer or keyboard users experience RSI symptoms at some time!

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
In the early stages these include:
muscle discomfort fatigue aches and pains
hot and cold feelings stiffness numbness and tingling
  muscle tightness soreness muscle weakness

These conditions may develop, if untreated, to a stage where the sufferer
experiences chronic pain. In many cases this becomes severe enough to
interfere with normal daily life for a period of months or even years.

WHAT CAUSES RSI?
RSI is a condition brought on by a number of factors such as poor
ergonomics and procedures, and high stress levels in the workplace.
All computer users are at risk unless specific measures are taken to
prevent this.

RSI occurs over a period of time and can often seem harmless at first.
It can start with a tightness or stiffness after continuous or rapid
typing... this is often thought to be normal after using a computer!
If the work environment does not change, then the computer user finds
that after some time the tightness persists during their breaks and even
when they are not at work.

HOW DO I PREVENT/CURE RSI?
Although the causes of RSI are varied, a proper system of prevention can
be employed that will not only prevent RSI at the cause but also
rehabilitate keyboard users that are already displaying symptoms of RSI.

Effective safety measures should address the following issues:
1. Workplace environment:
      operator seating and equipment layout
      task variation
2. Stress and relaxation:
      stress in the workplace
      relaxation techniques
3. Keyboard habits:
      typing speed
      Rest Breaks and Micropauses
      total time spent at keyboard

The RSI-Manager system effectively addresses ALL of these critical
issues.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE RSI PROGRAM?
Studies show that prevention of computer related illnesses will give
benefits such as:
  - reduced error rate
  - increased productivity (key strokes per hour)
  - fewer sick days
  - better morale

A longer term case of RSI will incur
  - loss of production time
  - loss of skill and experience
  - staff replacement and retraining costs

Other benefits are
  - better compliance with Health and Safety Acts

GETTING STARTED
The program/system is VERY easy to install, implement and use.

As with any modern software, it's possible to just run the software
without reading the manual, as everything is very intuitive.

However, to get the very best out of this carefully designed system, at
some stage we suggest you have a quick skim through this manual to get an
overall feel of it, then follow the specific instructions about
installing, logging-in, etc.

Many users have commented that the installation and setup procedure is
VERY quick and easy.

RSI: ITS CAUSE, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

The RSI-Manager system includes:
- Correct work environment and exercise information
- Guidelines for correct use of Forearm rest
- Correct timing schedule as implemented by the RSI-Manager software.

For the system to work effectively we strongly recommend that you include
all three of these components. Our manual includes all the information
needed to implement the system.

OTHER DISORDERS
As well as the prevention and effective treatment of RSI, The RSI-Manager
has also been shown to minimise:
- Eye strain
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Headaches/migraines

PRODUCTIVITY
Initial feedback on the system may seem that it will reduce productivity,
due to the pauses and breaks.
However, properly controlled trials have shown that it actually increases
productivity.
It allows users to maintain the levels of energy and concentration
necessary for good productivity.

So, please don't feel that the Micropauses etc are inconvenient, or are
slowing you down... they are actually increasing your productivity!

We all use it here at CTT, and feel generally better for it.
I myself felt initially that it would interfere with my work, but it have
found that the regular Micropauses make me feel "lighter" and more
energetic when working.
Short relaxation breaks every few minutes really do increase
productivity.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- If you are experiencing chronic pain you should consult your
physician. The RSI-Manager system is meant to prevent and treat RSI,
but medical consultation should be sought in cases of chronic pain.
- The main cause of RSI is your TOTAL work and personal environment.
Fixing any one component (eg taking rests or using a forearm-rest)
will not give the significant results that you can expect by using the
   TOTAL RSI-Manager system.
- Stress management in all its forms is a major factor in preventing and
   effectively treating RSI.

THE SYMPTOMS OF RSI
Early symptoms:
- Muscle discomfort - Fatigue - Aches
- Pains - Soreness - Hot and cold feelings
- Muscle tightness - Numbness - Tingling
- Stiffness - Muscle weakness

Later Symptoms:
- Burning - Shooting pains - Weakness of grip
- Dropping things - Inability to coordinate fingers.

If untreated, the early stages can progress to more serious stages such
as when pain extends beyond the work cycle. RSI is fairly easy to
effectively treat at the first stage, which is when there are mild
symptoms: typically aching and tingling late in the work cycle which
disappear on stopping work. If left untreated and allowed to progress to
an advanced stage it can cripple.

TREATMENT
The best treatment depends on your level of pain.
The stages of pain are as follows:

STAGE SYMPTOMS
1 Mild symptoms, typically aching and tingling late in the work
cycle, and disappearing on cessation of work.
2 Symptoms occur earlier in the work cycle, continue on when
work ceases, but are gone by the next morning.
3 Symptoms present at rest, at night, disturbing sleep and at
           weekends.

If you are in stage 1 or early stage 2, the only treatment needed is
detection and correction of the mechanism of injury.

If you are in late stage 2 or stage 3 you will need additional medical
treatment which may include:

- Relaxation therapy - Physiotherapy
- Re-training - Stress counselling
- Splinting - Massage therapy
- Acupuncture - Acupressure
- Aerobic exercise therapy

In general, medication and surgery have rarely been found to be
effective.

FACTORS CAUSING GREATEST RISK:
- Poor ergonomics from bad equipment layout
- Excessively high keystroke rates
- Lack of task variation
- Failure to take Micropauses and Rest Breaks
- Stress
- Amount of time spent at keyboard.

MATERIAL INCLUDED IN THE RSI-MANAGER SYSTEM
The system incorporates everything needed to implement a comprehensive
RSI preventative and treatment program:
- Reference Manual containing:
   - Setting up your work environment
   - Relaxation/exercise techniques
   - Installing and using the software
- Guidelines for correct use of Forearm rest
- Software which includes:
   - Self install program
   - Main operating program
   - Various utilities

SETTING UP YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT

Your work environment should contain the following correct components.
Detailed information on setting these up is contained in the printed
manual.

- The Forearm rest
- The chair
- The footrest
- The screen
- The desk
- The keyboard
- The copy holder and copy
- Lighting
- Noise
- The environment

THE SOFTWARE
The RSI-Manager software is designed to make it very easy and convenient
to implement the Micropause and Restbreak schedules.
Without the software, the operator must remember when to take a Restbreak
or Micropause. This is very difficult while typing.

As well as this, the software monitors the key rate, and also times the
amount of work done for the day.
All these features make the Software an important part in implementing
the RSI-Manager system.

We have tried to make it as unobtrusive and friendly as possible, so
employers and employees don't get annoyed with it interrupting their
work.
Yet it is still forceful enough to remind them of what they are supposed
to be doing.

Please refer to the SOFTWARE section of this manual for information on
installing and running the software package.

EXERCISES
A section is included in the manual showing various:
- relaxation techniques
- a regime of exercises

RELAXATION INSTRUCTION
Relaxation is THE key to avoiding RSI.
Working in a relaxed way means:
- Knowing what a relaxed muscle feels like.
- Knowing how to find a relaxed posture.
- Knowing how to work with rhythm.
- Knowing how to introduce relaxation pauses (Micropauses) into the work
   rhythm.

A Basic Technique for Relaxing:
This is one of the best techniques. It doesn't need much practice and
takes only a minute to try.

- Sit quietly and comfortably and close your eyes.
- Feel your breathing.
- Feel your breath coming and going.
- Repeat a word over and over as you breath out, such as
   "one...one...one..."

Relaxation training has three steps:
- Practice the technique just described twice daily for 10 to 15 minutes
until deep relaxation comes easily and naturally.
- Learn to relax rapidly, and relax several times a day.
- Identify the situations which create tension or make pain worse, and
deal with these through relaxation as they occur.

RELAXATION DURING THE MICROPAUSES
Relaxation during the Micropauses is very important as it:
- Allows tight muscles to relax.
- Clears lactic acid buildup which causes pain.

During the Micropauses:
- Rest your arms in your lap. (Some may prefer to rest the arms on the
   forearm rest)
- Allow your shoulders to "hang loose".
- Try moving your shoulders up, then let them drop down to get the idea
   of "hanging your shoulders loose".
- Close your eyes (after you have read this section!).
- Each time you breathe out, just "sag" and "let go of everything".

If you find it a bit difficult to relax at first, please persevere.
Relaxation during the Micropauses is a learned experience and many who
need relaxation most find it hardest to learn.

Alternatively, you may also wish to stretch or move your position during
a Micropause.
The main purpose of the Micropauses is to break your "concentrated"
typing position. Whether you relax, shift around, or stretch is up to
your own preference.
My own "style" is to relax as above for around 5 seconds, then rotate my
neck round, then stretch my arms out, and flex my back and shoulders for
a few seconds, taking a few deep breaths.

Note: It is also important to look away from the screen during
Micropauses to gives your eyes a break too.
- Look away from the screen and focus on a distant object
- Blink your eyes a few times

At the end of the Micropause a beep (if enabled) will sound to tell you
that the Micropause has ended.
The Micropause end is just a prompt and has deliberately been set a bit
short for convenience. If you feel that the Micropause has been too short
for you, just keep relaxing and/or stretching until you feel ready to
resume typing. This may be from 5 seconds to 20 seconds, whatever is
comfortable.

EXERCISES
These will normally be done during the Rest Breaks (not Micropauses).
However you may wish to do them at any time you feel the need.

We recommend that you perform all these 12 exercises each exercise
session.
The exercises need to be done in a relaxed manner and not too hurriedly
It is better to think in terms of "encouraging the muscles to lengthen"
rather than that you are "stretching" them.

SUGGESTED EXERCISE REGIME:
The total exercise regime is detailed in the full manual and could not be
included in this on-line manual due to the use of diagrams.
For the purposes of your evaluation, just get up an have a walk round,
and do some stretching exercises.

SAMPLE TIMINGS
The Default timings (as they come with the software) are for a
PREVENTATIVE situation... ie for people experiencing NO pain.

For the purposes of your evaluation we suggest you leave them as is.
Alternatively you may like to experiment with changing the timings if you
are experiencing chronic pain and wish to make the breaks longer and the
intervals shorter.

The full manual gives detailed recommendations for user and therapist
timings.

You may also wish to change your values from the above due to personal
preference, or due to your therapist's recommendation. In particular, you
may wish to change your Micropause Duration to fit in with the time you
find most convenient for the Relaxation technique.

THE RSI-MANAGER SOFTWARE

INTRODUCTION
The RSI-Manager is designed to help prevent computer operators who
perform intensive keyboard work from contracting RSI (Repetitive Strain
Injury), also called OOS or CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).
It is also useful in the treatment of these, and can be configured
according to the therapist's requirements.

RSI-Manager uses techniques that are at the forefront of the current
state of knowledge for preventing and treating RSI/CTS/OOS.
It is a very sophisticated program, yet very easy to use.

It achieves its task by:
- Prompting the user at specified intervals (Micropauses) so that the
operator can relax their arm and hand muscles
- Telling the operator when to get up from the keyboard and perform
other tasks for a while (a Rest Break).
- Scheduling the operator, allowing him/her to do relaxation and various
   exercises at specifically needed times.
- Keeping track of the total amount of time spent on the keyboard during
the day and telling the user when they have done the maximum daily
   amount of keying.
- Monitoring the rate of keying and informing the operator if s/he is
   typing too quickly.

RSI-Manager also has a use in occupational therapy as it helps RSI
sufferers follow the pattern of work, relaxation and exercises that are
required of them if they are to recover.

These exercises and scheduled breaks from key-board activity are
recommended by specialists who are treating RSI in recovery and
preventative situations.

RSI-Manager is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and not
interfere at all in your normal work.
While we strongly suggest that you follow the actions it recommends, any
actions you take as a result of its pop-up screens are completely
voluntary.
Ie, it will not force you to do anything, or make a nuisance of itself if
you follow your own course.

RSI-Manager runs in conjunction with most Windows-compatible programs.
Ie: it will run with Word For Windows, WordPerfect for Windows,
PageMaker, CorelDraw, Microsoft Excel, etc. It sits there quietly in the
background until it needs to tell you something, at which stage a pop-up
screen appears and a beep sounds. Once the pop-up has gone away (or you
have actioned its message) you can continue with normal computer use.

RSI-Manager will not work with earlier Windows versions than 3.1 We
suggest you upgrade to at least 3.1 as it's a vast improvement on earlier
Windows versions!
It will run with Windows in either Standard or Enhanced mode.

Each of the message screens are described in detail in their own section
of the manual

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- IBM AT or compatible computer (eg 286, 386, 486, Pentium)
- Hard Disk drive
- At least 2 Megabytes of RAM is recommended
- 5.25 or 3.5 inch floppy diskette drive (for installation)
- DOS 3.30 or later
- Microsoft Windows(TM) 3.1 or later in standard or enhanced mode
(also works with Windows for Workgroups, LAN and DOS versions
   available on request)
- EGA / Hercules resolution or better
- Battery backed up Real-Time clock (as standard on most PCs)
- Mouse

RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS
RSI-Manager for Windows has been designed primarily for running with word
processor, text editor and data entry applications.
It will therefore work with:
- WordPerfect
- Microsoft Word
- Most other industry-standard word processors
- Most industry-standard editors
It does work under some circumstances with other types of applications
such as CAD, Drawing, Publishing, Compilers, etc. However we make no
guarantees that it will work with these other "graphic" types of
applications. Your evaluation will let you know if it works with your
application.

GETTING STARTED

SOFTWARE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Very comprehensive instructions for operating the software are supplied
with the full User Guide. The following brief instructions are provided
to assist you during your evaluation of the software. If you require
further assistance, please contact us at the contacts in this document.

HARD DISK INSTALLATION
NOTE: These instructions are for Windows 3.1 or later.

RSI-Manager comes with an install program that will install RSI-Manager
onto your computer's hard disk for you. It will also make changes to your
Computer's WIN.INI file.

Users have commented many times on how easy and quick the program is to
install and get running. These instructions may look a bit long, but in
practice it should only take a few minutes.

NOTE: Help has not been implemented in this version.

To install the RSI-Manager program:
- Have Windows running.
- You will already have un-compressed the RSI-Manager archive file onto
   your hard drive and have it in {your drive}{your directory}
- If you are installing from floppy, have it uncompressed on the floppy,
or if it's in a compressed file on the floppy then uncompress it onto
   your hard drive as above.
- From the Windows Program Manager "File, Run" option:
In the command line type {your drive:}\{your directory}\INSTALL
(Alternatively, you can use the Browse option to select the RSI
   INSTALL program.
- Follow the screen prompts

Note: You have the option of having the RSI-Manager placed into your
STARTUP group. Select this if you wish to have the RSI-Manager active
automatically every time you start Windows.
If you don't place it in your STARTUP group you will need to activate it
by double clicking on its icon.

The installation process will create an RSI-Manager group and icon. You
may leave it as is, or drag the icon into another group if you wish, and
then delete the RSI-Manager group.

TO INSTALL THE DOCUMENTATION:
There are a number of documentation files, order forms, etc that are part
of the compressed archive.
The installation process as above does not copy these doc files across
into the C:\CSLWRSI directory (to save space on your hard drive).
If you wish these to also be copied across to the CSLWRSI directory, then
from within Windows click on File/Run menus as above and run INSTALLD.BAT

Now please read on, as you will need to add the User(s) and Log-on.

DATE AND TIME
The RSI-Manager program uses the date and time functions stored in your
computer. It is important to make sure the date and time in your computer
are set correctly before running this program.
Most computers will remember the date and time once it has been set, but
it would pay to check your computer's date and time are correct every
week or so.

CONFIGURING THE PROGRAM TO YOUR PERSONAL
PREFERENCE

ADDING A NEW USER
Before you start using RSI-Manager you will need to set it up for your
own user. The first thing to do is to add a new user.

Double click on the RSI-Manager icon and switch to it as per normal (ALT-
TAB is easiest)

From the User menu select the Log-in option. Click on the New User
button. Type your chosen user name in the User Name edit box.

You will be automatically given some default settings. You can change
them from this screen. To see how this is done refer to the Edit User
section of this manual.

BASE TYPING RATE RECORDING
This is an important step in configuration to your personal requirements.
One of the main causes of RSI is stress. Your Base Rate is the typing
rate that you are most comfortable with. RSI occurs when you are forced
by pressure of work to exceed your base rate.
The RSI-Manager flashes a prompt on the screen whenever you are exceeding
your base rate (or a set percentage of it).

For the purposes of evaluation, we suggest you don't go through the Base
Rate recording, as the default setting will handle most situations.
The full manual gives more details on how to record your base rate.

Now click on Save and OK to exit.

START UP USER
This is the user who is automatically logged in when RSI Manager is
started up.
To set yourself as the startup user, switch to the RSI-Manager as before,
then select User Maintenance from the User menu.
Click on your name to highlight it, click on Set as Start-up User, and
click on Close.
Then minimise the RSI-Manager by clicking on the top right down-arrow
button.

LOGGING A USER
Normally you will have RSI Manager start up and log you in automatically
by having it in the Startup group, and having yourself set as the Startup
User (see User Maintenance).

However, if you don't do this, or there is more that one person who uses
the same computer you will need to log yourself in manually.

From the User menu as before, select the Log-in User option. Select the
required name from the drop-down list, and then click on OK.

USER MAINTENANCE
From the User menu as before, select the User Maintenance option. Select
the name of the user to maintain and also which option you wish to take.

EDIT USER
To determine your usual typing speed, see BASE TYPING RATE RECORDING.

Warning Beep: The warning beeps are the beeps that occur at the start
and end of breaks.

Countdown Timer: You have the option of seeing how much time remains in
the current Rest Break.

START UP USER
This is the user who is automatically logged in when RSI Manager is
started up.

STANDBY
Standby temporarily stops the RSI Manager pop-ups from occurring.

Use standby mode whenever you leave the computer unattended, and wish to
allow others to use the computer without altering your personal timing.

You may also wish to use Standby if you are formatting a document (as
distinguished from entering the information) and don't wish to have the
RSI-Manager interrupt you when you are cursoring round, cutting/pasting,
etc.

To enter standby mode, check Standby from the User menu.
To go back to active mode, un-check Standby again from the User menu.

HOW THE TIMINGS WORK
RSI Manager "goes to sleep"
The times above are for the actual time you are typing, and not the
elapsed time. If you have not struck a key or used the mouse for 30
seconds RSI Manager "goes to sleep" until you start typing again.

If RSI Manager goes to "sleep" for a period greater than the Rest Break
Interval, the Rest Break Interval is re-initialised. This is so you don't
come back from a long break from the computer to find you have a Rest
Break straight away. While RSI Manager is "asleep" the work time
remaining is not adjusted.

POP UP MESSAGES
These pop up messages occur during the normal use of RSI Manager. They
form the basis of the work-time regulation that RSI Manager is designed
to encourage.

Once they have gone from your screen you can continue with normal
computer use. You can "Acknowledge" some of the screens with your mouse
if you wish to make them disappear. We recommend that you don't do this
as it takes time for your muscles to relax after working.

Rest Breaks are no substitute for Micropauses. It takes several hours to
recover from 50 minutes muscle tension without Micropauses. Micropauses
use less time per day than Rest Breaks.

Productivity gains may be expected at work if proper Rest Breaks and
Micropauses are built into work.

MICROPAUSE
This should be set so that it pops up every 3 minutes or so for about 5
seconds. During the Micropause do the relaxation techniques as in the
section in this document.

REST BREAK
During the Rest Break you should take a break, do some other work, or do
some stretching exercises. The full printed manual gives details and
diagrams of recommended exercises.

STOP WORK
This window tells you to when you should stop working for the day.

TOO FAST
