ABOUT WP4U.ZIP

Introduction

This collection came about rather by chance. We're fond of wallpaper, so
much so that we found the collection which shipped with Windows 3.1 got
small real fast! Initially we started tinkering with the colors in that
collection but quickly stopped, since the results clearly looked like
someone had been merely tinkering with the colors.

We then turned our attentions to creating our own. It proved very difficult
to get the results we wanted in Paintbrush, so we began experimenting with
various high-end vector and paint programs; some of this came from our
extensive involvement in beta testing several of those programs. As a result
of those experiments, and the appearance of new programs, we have finally been
able to create wallpaper which suits us aesthetically. And you have the
results now!

Using the collection

Unzip the contents to \WINDOWS and select via Main/Control Panel/Desktop.
If you use a wallpaper management program, and there are several good
shareware versions in WINNEW and WINADV, you will want to unzip to where
those programs ask/require you to store the wallpaper.

PLEASE remember from the online descripton that you need 256 color video
capability for these files to look as intended. Remember too that all need
to have the tiled option set in Control Panel/Desktop.

If, like us, you become enamored of wallpaper, we heartily recommend one
of the wallpaper management programs (first paragraph). All have their strong
points. We are particularly fond of the freeware change.exe, available on
ZNT:TIPS. This allows you to not only cycle through your wallpaper but to
do it in tandem with color schemes, screen savers, and desktop patterns; we
have *no* connection with the author of the program.

About the collection

WP4U.ZIP contains the following files (all .BMP except this .TXT file):

WP4U.TXT	CRYSTAL1
ABLEND DG1
ADOB1 PALAT
CIRCLES PALY
CIRCLES1	PS1
CROSS1 PTEST1
		PTEST2

We have created them mostly in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
in various combinations, often employing various stylizing filters from the
latter program. PALY was created in Fractal Design Sketcher and PALAT in
Harvard Draw.

About legal stuff

(this is boring but necessary)
All of this wallpaper represents our original creations. You may freely
distribute the complete zip file and modify (if you dare!) individual
pieces, but you may not distribute as other than our creation.

All of this wallpaper is distributed as is and we warrent that it will
look as we have represented it if properly installed. Although these are
graphics rather than executable programs, we nevertheless cannot be
responsible for any untoward results; there is no reason to think there
will be any! This includes, but is not limited to, the look of your Windows
display, palette conflicts, the state of your Windows .INI files, and any
tinkering you may do with your video.

We're sorry to have to take this space, but in an era of litigation for
even post-nasal drip, we must protect ourselves.

About shareware

Please see the first paragraph of the previous section. If you find this
collection pleasing and useful, and we will not attempt to define those
adjectives, we expect you to register it. Registration is not only "the right
thing to do" but will give you several added benefits. See next section.

About registration

To register, send a check for $10.00 payable to Robert Phillips to:

Robert Phillips
Classical Typography
621 15th Ave.
Bethlehem, PA 18018-6437

We feel this is a modest fee, particularly in light of the work involved to
produce the collection. Indeed, for less work we could produce a windows executable appropriate for the registration fee! Obviously, we did not do it for profit! But
registrations will encourage us to produce more for public consumption. In
addition, registration confers the following benefits:

1. Unlimited wallpaper support as long as Windows exists. It seems likely that
as new versions of Windows (NT, Cairo) appear there will be changes in palette
management and graphics functions. Since we have considerable Windows programmig
experience, we will modify/redo/consult as needed to take those changes into
account. Unregistered users will have unlimited support only as long as they
use Windows 3.1. Please note: we have no competence with OS/2 and thus cannot
undertake to support our collection if you use it with that operating system.

2. Our HOW2WP.WRI file, a collection of instructions and tips which can save
you much frustration in creating and modifying your own wallpaper. In fact,
it may even encourage you to compete with us! This file will not otherwise be
available; please indicate if you would like hardcopy (include mailing address)
or as the .WRI file (include your CIS number).

3. We will design you a custom wallpaper; this, of course, will be subject to
the time constraints of our business. In general, you'll get our best if you
want things along the lines of this collection, but we are certainly willing
to attempt full screen wallpaper designs, including photos. We can scan for
b/w, but if you want color photos we will need a you to supply a scan.

Unregistered: shame on you! But if you persist, see item one above.
