Documentation for Word-Up June 95.

This program is shareware, this means that you may use it and distribute
copies to others. If you decide that you like the software you may want
to register your copy with the author. After registration you will be
issued with a personal password which will enable additional features in
this software.
Until registration words of length greater than 6 letters will not be
dislayed, also the complex rhyme finder which matches complicated
spellings like 'true' and 'through' is disabled. (The basic rhyme finder
does work even in un-registered versions).

INTRODUCTION.
Word-Up is an integrated package designed to help solve word puzzles and
crosswords . It also has an additional feature for generating rhymes to a
word, a great source of inspiration when writing competition slogans,
poems, lymerics or songs.

INSTALLATION.
Word-Up runs on any IBM PC compatible computer.
It requires DOS 3.0 or higher, a floppy drive and a hard drive.

The supplied installation disk or zipped file contains the following files:

WORDUP.EXE The main program.
CRUNCHED.DCT A data file containing over 125,000 words.
WORDUP.TXT This document.

The program will only run from the C:\ drive. Copy all the files into a new
directory on your hard drive called C:\WORDUP.

You must now modify the existing PATH in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This means
adding ;C:\WORDUP to the end of the line.

ie, PATH = [existing paths remain here] ;C:\WORDUP

This will enable the operating system to find WORDUP.EXE and its data files.

IMPORTANT After installation please re-boot your computer before proceding.

REGISTRATION.
In order to encourage registration of this shareware, some features are
disabled until a password is entered. Registration costs US $12.00 or
10.00 UK Stirling, simply fill out the form at the end of this document.
Or copy the details onto a seperate sheet.
Upon reciept of payment I will send you the password for your system.

RUNNING THE PROGRAM.

Type wordup <Enter> at the DOS prompt.

If you haven't already registered, you will see a screen reminding you
about shareware etc and showing your unique PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
(PIN) . The program will halt at this point and wait for you either enter
the correct password or just press a key and <enter>.
Once registered this screen doesn't appear.

IMPORTANT NOTES AFTER REGISTRATION.
During registration the program will have created a directory called
C:\AUTH on your hard drive. This directory cannot be seen when using the
dir command because it's a hidden system directory. It is essential that
you do not attempt to delete, move or even change the attributes of this
directory. C:\AUTH will contain a read-only data file called AUTH.DAT.
This stores the authorisation codes that Word-Up uses to recognise
registered versions.
If you tamper with this file, or its directory, you may have to
re-register.(there is no charge for re-registering, its just inconvenient.)
The file is very small (only 2 bytes) and hidden from view, you are better
off forgetting that its there.

Once registered you will get the full features of this software, unless:
You install the program onto a different computer.
You accidentally move or delete the directory C:\AUTH.
You accidentally wipe the file C:\AUTH\AUTH.DAT.

As accidents do happen re-registration is of course FREE.
But I will know (from your PIN number) if you are trying to install onto a
different computer.

USING WORD-UP.
Type wordup <Enter> at the DOS prompt to run Word-Up.
The program screen is divided into four areas.

Title bar Shows software version information.
Footer bar Reminder of function keys.
Input window The active area where letters, words and numbers are
                   entered.
Output window The area where words are listed and messages displayed.
Along the top and bottom of the output window are
various statistics. (Note the output window is not
visible until after the first search begins).

THE ANAGRAM SEARCH.
Type the anagram letters, all lower case with no spaces ie.
Type	software then press <ENTER>

The program will open the output window and start searching for words
that fit the anagram 'software'. All the words found that can be made from
the letters S O F T W A R E will be listed in the output window.
This should take no more than a few seconds, depending on the speed of
your system. (See section on "Improving Preformance" later in this manual).

Looking along the top of the output window you will see the word "ANAGRAM".
This tells you that the program has done an "anagram search" on the input
string. (The anagram search is the default when lowercase letters are used
for the input string).

On the top right you will see in yellow 1/3 . This tells you that page 1
of 3 is currently being displayed.
Press the < PAGE UP/DOWN > keys to scroll through the pages and see the
rest of the words.

Along the bottom of the window are some statistics. The first is a total
word count. In this case 214 words have been made from the letters in
"software". Next in square brackets is the range of wordlengths used for
the search. In this example, the default of [ 2-8 ] has been used. (The
maximum wordlength allowed is 18 letters, but as the source anagram only
contained 8 letters, this has to be the maximum for this case.)
The next number, again in square brackets, is the time taken for the search.

CHANGING THE MINIMUM & MAXIMUM WORD LENGTHS.
Suppose you only want to find words of at least 4 letters but less than 6.

Your input will now need to be: software 4 6 then press <ENTER>

The minimum and maximum wordlength numbers are seperated by SPACES.
There are now only 146 solutions to the anagram "software" with 4-6 letters

USING WILDCHARACTERS IN THE INPUT.
A wildcharacter is a character that can represent any letter of the alphabet.
. Word-Up uses a question mark to represent a wildcharacter ?
For example suppose you were trying to make words from the letters "truth"
plus any two other letters.

Type truth?? then press <ENTER>

Also the range of wordlengths can still be changed as before.

Type truth?? 4 6 then press <ENTER>

When lots of wild characters need to be entered you can use the
shortcut of just typeing the number of ?'s required.

ie truth2 is the same as truth??

and truth3 4 6 is the same as truth??? 4 6

SOLVING CROSSWORDS.
Solving those tricky clues in a crossword couldn't be easier.
The input is simply entered as before exept CAPITAL letters are used.
This tells the program that all letters are in fixed positions (unlike in
an anagram). So if your doing a crossword just hit the <caps lock> key.
?'s are still used to mark unknown letters.
As you would expect in a crossword, the minimum and maximum wordlengths
are fixed to the length of the input, and so cannot be changed.

Suppose your crossword has the clue, "A discussion".
It's an 8 letter word. You know the second letter is ' i ' and the
seventh letter is ' u'.

Type ?I????U? or using multiple wildchars 1I4U?

The search will produce 46 words that will fit into the crossword. All that
you have to do is select the one that matches the clue. In this case
"dialogue".
Obviously the more letters you know, then fewer solutions will be offered.

FINDING WORDS THAT RHYME .
Due to the complexity of the English language, finding words that rhyme with
each other is very difficult. It is not simply a matter of matching the
endings.

For example take the following four words, taste, waist, laced & based.
All these words rhyme, but all have different endings. And to complicate the
issue even further the words, fraught & draught have the same ending but
don't rhyme. To try to overcome this problem, Word-Up includes two types
of rhyme search.

The first is a simple ending search.
The other is an intelligent search that attempts to find all spellings for
the rhyming sound (with registered versions only).

To do a simple ending search a dot or full stop (.) is entered before the
ending to match against.

To do an intelligent rhyming search .. (two dots) are used
before the ending to rhyme with.
(Due to the complex nature of the rhyming search, sometimes this search can
take awhile.)

To find all words that rhyme with "western" you have two choices.

(1) A simple ending search.
          	Type .ern <ENTER>
The program will find 45 words all ending in 'ern.

(2)	A complex rhyme search.
          	Type ..ern <ENTER>
The program will now find some 82 words. Words like heartburn, firn,
epergne, learn & kerne, are now included.

This complex search does have limitations, if you try this example, you will
see that the words mourn and cairn have also been included, even though they
don't rhyme.

TIP: If this search doesn't work for a particular word then try entering an
ending which itself rhymes with, but has a different spelling to the
original. ie ..urge instead of ..irge . If this doesn't achieve
the required results, then you will have to use the simpler ending match.
As in (1) above.

Wordlength filtering can be used with both of these searches. If your
looking for rhymes with only a few sylabuls then try reducing the maximum
wordlength. If you want longer rhyming words then increase the minimum
wordlength.

SORT OPTIONS.
The default display automatically sorts words into alphabetic order.
You also have the option of sorting into wordlength order by pressing the
F2 key.
F3 will display a random order (usefull for disguising multiple competition
entries).
Pressing F1 will restore alphabetic order again.

ABORTING DURING A SEARCH.
Pressing <Escape> during a search will stop it at any time.

PRINTING WORD LISTS.
Make sure your printer is online etc and press F5, you will be asked to
confirm the request by pressing F5 again to start printing.
Pressing <ESC> will terminate printing at any time.

IMPROVING PERFORMANCE.
As the speed of this software relies heavily on disk access speed, I
recommend the use of a disk cache. See your DOS documentation for
information on this. For size of the cache should be large enough so
that there is no or little disk activity during a search (other than for
the first search).

QUITTING THE PROGRAM
Press F8 to quit, you will be asked to confirm the request.

ERROR MESSAGES.
If an error occures in the application you will see an error message on
the screen. Here is a list of what they mean and possible causes.

Error # 1: Cannot open data file. This means the program cannot find
the dictionary file "crunched.dct". Check to see that it exists in the
C:\wordup directory, and check the path statement in autoexec.bat has
C:\wordup in it.

Error # 2: Incompatable DOS version. This program needs DOS 3.0 or
greater.

Error # 3: Cannot allocate dynamic memory. You have run out of memory,
remove unwanted TSRs and drivers.

Error # 4: Search aborted. The maximum of '10,000' words has been reached.
This program is limited to displaying less than 10,000 words for any
single search. Try reducing the range of word lengths and doing two
searches, ie words of 2-6 letters first, then 7-18 letters.

Error # 5: Incorrect version of data file. It is unlikely you will have
the incorrect dictionary with your version.

Error # 6: Cannot allocate dynamic memory. As Error #3.

Error # 7: Error reading into memory. Program error.
Error # 8: Error reading header. Program error.
Error # 9: Error reading into memory. Program error.

Error # 10: Search aborted by user. Pressing <escape> aborts searches.

Error # 11: Cannot allocate dynamic memory. As Error #3.

Error # 12: Search aborted after 'n' words. Too many solutions for
available memory. Try reducing the range of word lengths and doing two
searches, ie words of 2-6 letters first, then 7-18 letters.

Error # 14: Data too long for available memory. Program error.

Error # 15: Cannot allocate dynamic memory. As Error #3.
Error # 16: Error occured reading header. Program error.

Default: Any unlisted errors are displayed as "default" errors.
