1. OVERVIEW

Do you organise sporting competitions?

  Use Home or Away to schedule your teams in a round robin
  competition at lightning fast speed. Create a basic schedule in
  just a few minutes. Just enter the names of the teams, press the
  generate schedule button and print the schedule. Home or Away
  does not force you to enter any information that it does not need
  or cannot work out for itself.

  The schedules produced by Home or Away are balanced. As long as
  the number of games scheduled represent a number of complete
  rounds the schedules produced have the following qualities:

  * Each team plays every other team the same number of times
  * Each team plays every other team before any rematches
  * Each team has a fair mix of home and away games

Are your schedules more complex?

  Use Home or Away for advanced schedules as well. Schedule
  competitions for as many as forty teams with these features:

  * Dates, Times and Locations

  Specify date ranges, holiday periods, playing days, number of
  games at each time etc. with powerful date functions. Enter
  details of available times and locations and assign preferred
  home locations and playing times.

  * Modify games manually

  Manually modify the games that Home or Away schedules to handle
  exceptional situations. Home or Away preserves your changes and
  optionally reschedules the remaining games.

  * Summary

  Summarise the schedule to see at a glance how well balanced it
  is and to highlight any problems.

  * Optimisation

  Optimise the schedule to reduce the total number or
  distribution of home or away streaks.

  * Presentation capabilities

  Customise the printed schedules by selecting font styles, sizes
  and page orientation. Export the information to spreadsheets,
  database managers and word processors (e.g. MS Excel, Access and
  Word) to exploit their extensive data sorting, report design and
  formatting capabilities.

  * Internet-ready schedules

  Publish your schedules on the Internet or view them with a Web
  Browser by exporting them in the web page HTML format.

2. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 3.0

  V3.0 (5 Jun 1998)

  * Share Locations / Minimise Streaks

  When generating a schedule you can now choose from one of two
  different scheduling methods. The new method is considerably
  faster and has the additional benefits that pairs of teams
  can share locations i.e. one team always plays at home whenever
  the other is away and vice versa. This scheduling method also
  results in a schedule with very few home / away streaks i.e.
  more than two consecutive home (or away) games for any team.

  The original scheduling method is still available as an option
  for compatibility with previous versions. Its main feature is
  that it automatically rebalances a schedule if you have made
  any manual changes to any of the game matchups. e.g. if you
  have modified a schedule to ensure that two particular teams
  play each other on a certain day, the schedule will be
  rebalanced to ensure that each team still plays each other
  team the same number of times.

  * Separate Optimisation

  When a schedule is generated it can be optimised to reduce the
  number of home / away streaks. The optimisation function can
  now be started separately without having to generate the
  schedule again. This is useful if you have made manual
  modifications, but you do not want the schedule to be
  rebalanced.

  * Options Menu - Days Between Games

  You can specify a minimum number of days break between games.
  e.g. if you want to ensure that no team plays more than once
  on the same day set the value to 1. If the value is set to 0
  Home or Away will just avoid scheduling games at the same
  time.

  Home or Away does not change the timeslots that you have
  entered, it reorders the games so that they are further
  apart. In some cases, Home or Away will not succeed in
  rescheduling all of the games. These are marked with a !
  in the status column of the schedule. You can either try
  again, using a different method of optimising Home or Away
  streaks, or you can modify the dates and times manually.

  * Options Menu - Skip Byes

  Byes, by default, occupy a timeslot. Check the Skip Byes
  option if you only want timeslots to be occupied by actual
  games for the current schedule.

  * Options Menu - Save as Default

  The current options settings are save and used as the default
  values when a new schedule is created.

  * Windows 98

  Both 16-bit and 32-bit versions of Home or Away have been tested
  on Windows 98 without any problems.

==================================================
10. COMPATIBILITY WITH PREVIOUS VERSIONS

  You can open schedule files created by Home or Away V2.0 or
  later with V3.0.

  Schedules saved with earlier versions of Home or Away can be
  opened with V3.0 and are automatically converted to the new
  format when saved. In some circumstances (see notes below) the
  resulting schedule may be different.

  Use Save As to save the new files with a different name if you
  still want to use the original files with the earlier version.

  Note: If your schedule is not a complete round robin (i.e.
  each team does not play every other team the same number of
  times) you will need to regenerate the schedule with V3.0
  before you optimise it.

  Note: If time clashes were detected and removed by Home or
  Away, the resulting schedule may be different in V3.0 as it
  uses a more effective method of removing time clashes.

==================================================
11. PROBLEMS FIXED

  * V2.24 (2 Apr 1998)

  In some circumstances, depending on the number of games played
  at a time, a team could be scheduled to play more than one
  game at the same date and time. These are now interchanged
  with other matches wherever possible.

  When working with a second schedule in a session, the previous
  schedule was not always completely cleared. This resulted in
  some spurious results and possibly a 'division by zero' error.
  The problem could be avoided by restarting Home or Away
  the previous schedule

  * V2.23 (14 Mar 1998)

  The printed times did not always match the displayed times.
  This used to happen if the schedule had been optimised to
  reduce streaks. If the schedule was saved and then reopened
  the printed times would be corrected.

  * V2.21 (20 Jan 1998)

  If date is blank it now exports as blank instead of
  0/0/0 (Win3) or 30/12/99 (Win32).
  Schedules containing manual games now reschedule correctly.
