		Who's-In? Installation

Thank you for choosing to evaluate our 5 user
Who's-In? Trial Pack !

Installing Who's-In? involves the following steps:

We will assume you have unzipped/expanded the file you
downloaded into a directory on your local C: drive...

* Run the Who's-In? SETUP.EXE program which will copy all
the files from your local C drive to a File Server,
create a new Folder/Group and automatically run the
  Administrator Program.
* Add some users, or Import them from an ASCII text file.
( Add yourself as the first user! )
* Double click your name from the User List and set
  Global Access Rights ON.
(This will allow you to change anyone's Status.)
* Select your receptionist's name from the user list,
and also set his/her Global Access Rights to ON.
* Run the main Who's-In program, and it will ask you to
select the user name for this PC. Select your own name
at this point, and you are up-and-running.
* Add the WI-USER.EXE program icon to each user's Startup
Group/Folder, or simply run the INSTALL.EXE (Workstation
Installation) program, which will create a WHOS-IN
Group/Folder, and add the required Icons.

INSTALLING PROGRAM FILES AND DATABASE
FILES TO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS:
The database files may be located on a different drive
and/or directory to assist those people who require the .EXE
files to be placed in a READ ONLY area, and the database
to be located in a READ / WRITE area.

To move the database to a new location:
* Create the new subdirectory at the desired location.
  Example: W:\APPS\WHOS-IN\DATABASE
* Move WHOS-IN.MDB, WHOS-IN.LDB, WISERIAL.LDB, WISERIAL.MDB,
HUDSON.MDA AND HUDSON.LDB to the new location.
* Run the Admin Program, and from the FILE MENU,
choose DATABASE PATH and enter the new location.
(This must be accessable to all users, and we highly
recommend you use Universal Naming Convention path names,
  not dedicated drive letters.)
  Example UNC Path: \\SERVER\SHARE_NAME\PATH\

IMPORTANT:
It is important that the database location drive assignment
for all users be identical. The program files drive assignment
may be different for different users, but the database directory
assignment must be identical for all users at all times.
(OR you may use Universal Naming Conventions to attach to a
server. eg. \\SERVER\SHARE\PATH\ )

Example:
(Assuming the program files are installed to W:\APPS\WHOS-IN
and the database files have been installed to X:\WHOS-IN.)

Drive W may be assigned to different users as G H J or
whatever, but the database must always be assigned to X
for all users ! The reason for this is that the file
WHOS-IN.INI contains the Path to the database, and if
the drive assignment is different for a user, they will
be unable to locate the database.

The WHOS-IN.INI file containing the path to the database
files may be edited (with NotePad) after installation to
display a UNC path if required.

MS ACCESS COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS

IMPORTANT:
It is essential you use the MS Access Jet Engine
( MSAJT200.DLL ) supplied with Who's-In? The file may
appear to be the same as the standard file supplied with
Access 2, but it is not. We use version 2.5 and the two
are not compatible. ( Someone on your network using
version 2.0 of this DLL is the most likely cause of
corrupted database errors.)

Please consider a system wide upgrade of this DLL for all
your users. Contact Microsoft for a complete Access upgrade
and ask for ACCSRV.EXE (Access Service Pack) or download
the zipped version from the Who's-In area within the
HUDSON Forum on msn.
(NOTE: The Access Service Pack is 1.9mb (compressed) and
includes many additional DLL's to bring Access up to
version 2.5)

MS ACCESS FILE INFORMATION:

Old file details (MS Access version 2.0) :
MSAJT200.DLL 04 Apr 1994 994496

New file details (MS Access version 2.5):
MSAJT200.DLL 20 Nov 1994 995056

IMPROVING NETWORK PERFORMANCE

The Whos-In? Setup program copies all files into the
directory on the server you specify, however due to the
large size of several of the Microsoft DLLs
(eg MSAJT200.DLL = almost 1Mb) loading these files from
the server to a workstation each time Whos-In? is run
each day can degrade network performance. Multiply the
file sizes by say, 100 or more users, and we are talking
huge amounts of network traffic each morning! To enhance
the load times of Who's-In? you may choose to copy the
required files to each users local PC, however there are
also disadvantages in doing so...

If your users run Windows from their own local (C:) drives,
you may choose to run the INSTALL.EXE program (located on
the server) from each users PC, and choose the copy files
option. This option will :

Create a WHOS-IN directory on the users PC.
Copy the required files from the File Server to the
  users local Hard Disk.
Create a new Who's-In? Group or Folder.
Create the required Icons in the Group or Folder.

In this case, the ICON properties will point to the
.EXE files located on the users local Hard Disk. Then, when
Who's-In? is run, it will read the local copy of WHOS-IN.INI
to locate the database files on the Server. This will
dramatically improve the performance of your network by
reducing traffic, and speed up the loading time for Whos-In?

DISADVANTAGES:
Should the administrator for some reason move the WHOS-IN
directory on the server, each users local copy of
WHOS-IN.INI (located in the program files directory) would
need to be updated with the new server location.
When installing an updated version of Who's-In? in the
future, the files on each users PC will be out of date,
and the INSTALL / copy files procedure would need to be
  run again for each user.

DO NOT USE THE COPY FILES OPTION IF YOUR USERS RUN WINDOWS
FROM A SHARED DIRECTORY ON THE SERVER.
