




          The giant set them down gently at the city gate. "I hope you have 
     now learned your lesson," he said. 
          "Oh, thank you kindly!" said Peddler Polly, lighting her pipe 
     with a shakey hand. "I believe I have!" 
          The giant turned and raced back down the road, vanishing from 
     sight within seconds. 
          So Peddler Polly entered the city with goods to sell and a story 
     to tell. And ever since then--thanks to Peddler Polly--travelers 
     between Here and There have only to bring themselves halfway. 
          From there, they get a ride from the giant.
