                                BUILD STAIRS

Use the number 17 for stair building. As the sum of
the height of one riser and width of one tread in inches.

The riser is normally 6 to 7 inches. The tread is
usually 9 to 10 inches plus an overhang.

This number, 17 is used for all types of stairs and
always results in a comfortable step. They go from 3 and 14
          or 7 and 9.

          LAY OUT OF THE STRINGER

The stringer is the piece of wood that the risers and
the tread are nailed to. This material is combined to make
a total thickness of one and one half inches.

The stringer is cut out of one three quarter by
twelve spruce or pine and then nailed to another uncut
          three quarter board.

To find the riser measurement measure the distance
from the surface of the floor to the surface of the other
          floor.

Divide this measurement by seven ( the height of the
riser ). For example if the distance between the two floor
is 1O5 divided by 7 equals 15 steps. The tread will be 1O.

Use 7 and 10 on the framing square and lay out the
cut outs for the steps. Or make a patern that is 7 and 10
inches from the square end of a board.

Subtract the thickness of the tread from the bottom
of the bottom step. Before cutting.

After you cut the stringer tack it to the other board
and trace it and cut the other stringer.

Cut the risers and treads next. The thickness of the
riser is subtracted from the width of the tread because it
will be nailed behind the tread. Allow an overhang.

Nail the stringers to an other three quarter board
use four penny nails and bend them over.

Nail the risers to the stringers first then the
treads. Then nail all the risers and treads together.

                            *** EASY DO TIPS ***

          1. When you cut the stringer finish the inside corners with
a hand saw. This will make the stringer stronger.

          2. Let the tread overhang the riser 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch.

          3. When you lay out the stringer if the figures do not come
out even, use the nearest fractional equivalent ( see
             fractions ).
                                                            END
