2.0 INSTALLING AND UNINSTALLING

Installation is easy. Basically it is just copying
files from your distribution disk. We have provided an
installation program (INSTALL.EXE) to do this for you.
If you are running Windows, you also need to set up a few
       icons manually - INSTALL.EXE doesn't handle that.

If you already have a copy of BlueBook on your system,
you can safely install this version directly over the top
of it (ie, into the same directory). But as always, it is
a good idea to have a backup of your program files, just
in case the distribution disk proves faulty.

       ----------------------------------------------------------
INSTALL.EXE writes a text file called INSTALL.LOG into
your chosen installation directory, so you can see what it
       has done.
       ----------------------------------------------------------

       ==========================================================
IF YOUR FILES ARE STILL COMPRESSED.....

If you are reading this, your files are probably expanded,
but not certainly. Some programs, like Central Point's
File Manager replacement, can read and display compressed
       files for you.

The usual format for a "zipped" file is the PKZip one,
which can come as either a simple ".ZIP" file, or as a
self-expanding program ("Something.EXE"). The former has
to be run through PKZip before it is usable; the latter
just has to be run, like any other program, in order to
       expand the files.

Whichever kind of file you have, copy it to a TEMPORARY
directory, and expand it there. Once expanded, you can
use INSTALL.EXE to copy its contents to your chosen
PERMANENT installation directory. (INSTALL won't let you
install TO the same directory you are installing FROM.)

Don't forget to delete the expanded files in the temporary
directory when you are done, to save disk space.
       ==========================================================

2.1 Uninstalling Old Components / Copying New Ones

When INSTALL.EXE has copied the files on the distribution
disk, it will offer to search all directories in your
Path for old program components, and delete them for you.

This is housekeeping, to prevent possible clashes between
versions. You can safely agree to it provided you are
sure this new version has been correctly copied across,
and/or that you have a good backup. (You can skip this
step if installing for the first time.)

       ----------------------------------------------------------
NB - Existing databases will NOT be deleted, and you
should NOT delete them manually: they are fully compatible
with this new version of the program.
       ----------------------------------------------------------

INSTALL will next offer to copy the latest versions of
these components FROM your installation directory, TO a
directory in your Path (selected by you).

You should agree to this. BLUEBOOK.EXE is only a launcher
program. It runs BBMAIN.EXE, which in turn uses BBVIEW.COM,
BLUEBOOK.HLP, etc. Having all these in your Path, readily
accessible, ensures smooth operation regardless of your
       current directory.

       ----------------------------------------------------------
If you don't agree to this, you will need to include your
installation directory (C:\BLUEBOOK) at the end of the
PATH statement (";C:\BLUEBOOK") in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
and reboot before running. Either that, or ALWAYS be in
your installation directory when you run BlueBook.
       ----------------------------------------------------------

2.2 Now to install....

On the DOS command line, or in the Windows File/Run box,
type the command "A:\INSTALL" (no quotes) and hit <Enter>
       or click <OK> as appropriate.

That's assuming you are installing from a floppy diskette
in the A: drive, with the files in the root directory of
the floppy. If you are installing from a CD (which is
probably your D: drive), and the files are in a directory
on the CD such as, for example, "\SHARE\BLUEBOOK", then
       you would type instead:

          D:\SHARE\BLUEBOOK\INSTALL <Enter> (or <OK>)

INSTALL will ask you to enter the drive and directory you
are installing FROM (ie, where your distribution disk is
located), and where you want to install TO. The defaults
are "A:\" and "C:\BLUEBOOK" respectively - modify them as
required ("A:\" to "D:\SHARE\BLUEBOOK", for example).

       ----------------------------------------------------------
We assume you want to install to your C: hard disk, and
to a directory \BLUEBOOK. You are urged to do this, as it
will save you having to alter Windows PIF files, etc.
       ----------------------------------------------------------

When all the files have been copied over, INSTALL will
take you through the housekeeping steps described above.
And that's it, you are set up. Except for Windows.

To set up BlueBook under Windows you need to:

       (1) Make a new program GROUP (or select an existing one).

       (2) Create five new PROGRAM ITEMS (one for BlueBook, and
one each for its companion programs, the utilities
           BBReset, BBRestor, BBTrim, and BBIni).

           ------------------------------------------------------
If you already have these from a previous version,
you can skip this step - but please see the next
           highlighted note, in (3) below.
           ------------------------------------------------------

       (3) Tell these to run the PIF files provided (NOT the
programs directly) and use the relevant icon files,
eg. run BBTRIM.PIF, and use BBTRIM.ICO, from your
           installation directory.

           ------------------------------------------------------
If you chose to install somewhere other than
C:\BLUEBOOK, you MUST update all PIF files to "point"
at that directory as requested by INSTALL.EXE, using
           the Windows PIF Editor.
           ------------------------------------------------------

IF INSTALLING FOR THE FIRST TIME, you should also
"File/Associate" (in File Manager) the file types BBL,
BBI and BBD with BLUEBOOK.EXE, to enable point and
           click launching from there.

IF YOU HAD A PREVIOUS VERSION INSTALLED, and you took
this opportunity to change the installation directory,
don't forget to update all the OLD program items
(quite apart from the PIFs), using File/Properties
           in Program Manager.

           ------------------------------------------------------
If you need help installing a program into Windows, or
you don't understand PIF files, or you don't know how
           to "associate", there's a very full, click-by-click
guide for Windows 3.1 in the file "WinSetup.Doc".
           ------------------------------------------------------
           ------------------------------------------------------
SHORT OF DESKTOP? You CAN skip installing utilities.
They can all be run from DOS, or even from a BlueBook
database record (taking care to avoid clashes with
           already open databases).
           ------------------------------------------------------

2.3 Miscellaneous points

It IS possible to run BlueBook direct from a diskette or
CD, with provisos. See section 4, "Running the Program".

Beware of changing diskettes while a database is still
       open!

       ----------------------------------------------------------
TO UNINSTALL, just delete the files relating to BlueBook
in the installation directory you chose; those copied
elsewhere (see INSTALL.LOG); and any databases you made.
       ----------------------------------------------------------
