                    ----------------------------------------

Changes to the current edition of the PAY*STAR Reference Manual are
    presented below.

Please note that whenever the PAYSTAR directory is referenced, it is
referring to the directory containing the PAY*STAR program, PR.EXE.
PAY*STAR version 2.21 will normally be in the directory, PAYST22.

To get a hard copy of this file, use your word processor or, from
the Program Manager Command Line or C:\> prompt, type the command:
    COPY path\README2.TXT PRN

If you use Windows' Notepad to print this, set the left and right
    margins to 0.

Page 1-5, last paragraph. Begin the sentence with:

On the PAY CALCULATION screen ...

    --------------------------PAY CALCULATION---------------------------

Page 5-14, "EMPLOYEE-PAID TAXES". Replace the second paragraph with:

Employee taxes are calculated using data in the EMPLOYEE MASTER
RECORD (payroll frequency, marital status, W-4 deductions, EIC
status, and SIT and SDI tax states); the PAYTYPES table (pay and
deduction taxability); and the FEDERAL and CALIFORNIA TAX TABLES.

For employees whose SIT or SDI state is not California, use XSIT
and XSDI tax overrides as appropriate. Entered amounts will be
reported under the employee's SIT and SDI state respectively.
(See UPDATING EMPLOYEE BALANCES for more on tax overrides.)

    -------------------------USER REPORT LAYOUT-------------------------

Page 9-9, "Month begin". Change paragraph to read:

"Month begin" specifies the beginning column for month number
        (mm) or month abbreviation (Mmm).

Page 9-9, "Year begin". Change paragraph to read:

"Year begin" specifies the format of check-date and the
beginning column for year as shown below. (The last format
leaves room for a pre-printed century.) To print:

            mm/dd/yy set to "Month begin" + 6
Mmm dd, yyyy set to "Month begin" + 8
Mmm dd yy set to "Month begin" + 9 or more.

Page 9-9, "Pay-to line". Change paragraph to read:

"Pay-to line" specifies the print line for employee name. If
employee address is also to appear on the paycheck, include the
phrase, "/addr", in the REPORT TITLE box. (Quotes are not
needed.) The two- or three-line address will print immediately
        below employee name.

Page 9-9, "PNT CTL FILE". Add the paragraph:

If you are printing a combined earnings statement and paycheck
and using two printer control files, use the vertical spacing of
the first item on the page to determine the beginning line number
        of the second item.

    ---------------------PRINTER CONTROL FILE EDIT----------------------

Page 9-16, Data Description. Add the paragraph:

Printer-control files for Hewlett-Packard LaserJet and compatible
printers must have a name that begins with the letters "HP".
Files for non-compatible printers must have a file name that
        begins with something else.

    --------------------APPENDIX A - MEMORY MESSAGES--------------------

Page A-2, Increasing Available Memory. Add the paragraphs:

When you start PAY*STAR in the normal manner with the command,
PR, you are in fact starting C:\PR.BAT - a batch file in the
root directory of your hard disk. This file in turn starts
C:\PAYSTAR\PR.EXE - the PAY*STAR program located in the PAYSTAR
        directory.

If you are starting PAY*STAR from Windows, you can save about 3K of
RAM if you use the Program Manager Command Line and start PAY*STAR
directly. To do this, select File (Alt+F), Run (R), and type
C:\PAYSTAR\PR.EXE on the Command Line. (You won't save anything if
you select the icon, MS-DOS Prompt, from the Windows Main screen.)

You can save an additional 3K of RAM by exiting Windows completely
and starting PAY*STAR from native DOS. To do this, select File
(Alt+F) and Exit Windows (X). If you don't have the C:\> prompt,
type CD.. and press Enter. Repeat this until you get the C:\>
prompt. Now start PAY*STAR in the normal manner by typing PR and
        pressing Enter.

-----------APPENDIX B - PRINTERS AND PRINTER CONTROL FILES----------

Page B-1, Appendix B (new). Add the appendix:

    Introduction

PAY*STAR is initially set up to use any Hewlett-Packard LaserJet
or LaserJet-compatible printer. All user and tax reports are
set to initialize the printer with a *.PCF printer-control file
containing Hewlett-Packard PCL Printer Language commands.

If you do not have an HP LaserJet or compatible printer, then
you may either use the printer's hardware settings or create
        printer-control files of your own.

    Installing Printer-Control Files

When installing PAY*STAR, you are asked if you have a LaserJet or
        compatible printer.

If you answer "Yes", the printer-control files are copied from
the install disk to the PAYSTAR directory and given a .PCF file
extension. PAY*STAR has been set up to look for files with this
extension and use them to initialize the printer.

If you answer "No", the printer-control files are copied and
given a .PCX extension. PAY*STAR has not been set up to look
for files with this extension and, therefore, will not find any
and will not try to initialize the printer.

The printer-control files included with PAY*STAR and their
        intended use is summarized below:

        Filename Chars/in Lines/in Feed Use
        ---------- -------- -------- -------- ----------------------

The PCL Printer Language commands in these files may be changed
or new files created. Note that the file name of printer-control
files for Hewlett-Packard LaserJet and compatible printers must
begin with the letters "HP". The file name of printer-control
files for other printers must not begin with the letters "HP".

Consult your HP LaserJet Technical Reference Summary and Section
9 of the PAY*STAR Reference Manual for more information on PCL
commands and how to create printer-control files.

    Installing a New Printer

If you install a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet or compatible printer
after you install PAY*STAR, you can still use the printer-control
files by renaming them from *.PCX back to *.PCF as follows:

Change to the PAYSTAR directory. From the C:> prompt, type:

                    CD PAYSTAR

Rename the *.PCX files to *.PCF by typing:

                    RENAME *.PCX *.PCF

Return to the C:> prompt by typing:

                    CD..

Likewise, if you install a non-LaserJet-compatible printer after
you install PAY*STAR, rename the HP files from *.PCF to *.PCX.

Creating Control Files for Other Printers

You may create printer-control files for other printers by
consulting your printer's reference manual and using the printer-
control file conventions described in 9-15 through 9-17 of the
        PAY*STAR Reference Manual.

        Non-LaserJet-compatible printer-contol files must not have a
file name that begins with the letters "HP". Any file extension
may be used but only files with a .PCF extension will appear in
the file list below the PNT CTL FILE box on the USER REPORT LAYOUT
        and TAX REPORT LAYOUT screens.

If you create new printer-control files, be sure to change the
PNT CTL FILE name on reports where you wish to use the new files.
(See Section 9 of the PAY*STAR Reference Manual for information
on the USER REPORT LAYOUT and TAX REPORT LAYOUT screens.)

    LPT1 Timeout Value Modification

Upon loading PAY*STAR, the ROM-BIOS LPT1 timeout value is
saved and then replaced by the value in sys.timeout. The
sys.timeout value is initially set to 0 but can be changed
from the PAY*STAR screen's internal command line (Ctrl+6) by
entering, "set timeout". At the prompt, enter a value from
        0 to 255.

Upon leaving PAY*STAR, the original LPT1 timeout value is
restored. If PAY*STAR does not end normally, the computer
        should be rebooted.

Users who still experience printer time-out problems should
add the following to their AUTOEXEC.BAT file: MODE LPT1,,P
