What is Matches?

Matches is a simple game of memory. You play against the
computer, attempting to remember the position of pictures hidden
under squares. The game has an option to let you match pictures
with words. I wrote this game for my five year old daughter to help
her learn her vocabulary words from school. Contrary to what she
claims, the computer does not cheat at the higher level settings.

Installing Matches

There is no fancy installation program with Matches. Simply copy
the files on this disk to any suitable directory on your hard disk.
The three files you will need are; MATCHES.EXE, MATCHES.IMA,
MATCHES.HLP. You can add Matches to your Program Manager
by selecting the program group, then selecting the File New menu
option. Select Program Item and click on OK. For the description
type "Matches" and enter the full path and program name on the
Command Line entry, eg. D:\GAMES\MATCHES.EXE.

Starting Matches

Double click on the Matches Icon in either the Program Manager or
the File Manager.

Playing Matches

Rules and instructions for playing Matches are obtained by using
the Help menu selection. The menus are for adults. Kids don't
usually need instructions. (They wouldn't follow them even if they
had them.)

Customizing Matches

Matches contains about 50 pictures. More than enough if you're
just playing a memory game, but if your using Matches for
increasing your child's vocabulary you may need to customize it
with your own pictures. Registered users can add pictures to the
Matches data base by sending the pictures on disk to the address
below. Pictures must be in two color Microsoft Bitmap format and
measure 72 x 72 pixels. You can make these by using the
Windows Paint program. Name the bitmap the word you want to
appear in matches, for example; MOOSE.BMP for moose. Include
a self addressed stamped disk mailer with your order. There is
no charge for this service. All artwork becomes the property of
Quality Concepts.

Speeding up Matches

The internal memory settings for Matches have been set to allow
the game to be played in real mode with only 640K of memory. If
you're running in Standard or Extended Mode and you have extra
memory you can speed up the program placing the following lines
in your WIN.INI file.

[Matches]
static=150

If the Matches section exists in win.ini, simply add the static line.

If you get the message "Not enough memory to run Matches", set this
value at 70, and try to run the program again. Repeat
this routine every time you get the message, decreasing the value by
10 each time. Do not set below 40 however. Settings below 40 may cause
the computer to hang or error messages to be generated.

Registering Matches

You may evaluate Matches free of charge, but if you wish to use it,
you must register it with Quality Concepts. To register, send
$10.00 (ten dollars, US) to
