WDIR
WDIR COPYR. 1994 MIHA MAZZINI ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

WHAT IS WDIR?
WDIR works similarly as DIR command in DOS but displays also information
about contents of Windows EXE, GRP, PIF, PFB, TTF, SFP, SFL, VBX, DLL,
FON, FOT, DRV, CPL, ACM, MMH, TSK,... files.

Type WDIR /? for help.

HOW TO USE IT?

If you type the following command in Windows SYSTEM directory

       DIR MMP.DLL

you'll get the following (or similar) information:

       MMP DLL 105.072 06.03.92 0:00

Typing

       WDIR MMP.DLL

will reveal the contents of the cryptic MMP.DLL file

       MMP.DLL 105072 Multimedia Player DLL

Lost in fonts?

Just type WDIR *.TTF in the Windows SYSTEM directory and you'll get a
list of fonts with their real names, not just file names. For example,
ARLRDBD.TTF is Arial Rounded MT Bold.

Even more! Are you searching for Courier font? Type

            WDIR *.TTF /FCourier

and presto!

            COUR.TTF 72356 Courier New
            COURBD.TTF 78564 Courier New Bold
COURBI.TTF 84436 Courier New Bold Italic
            COURI.TTF 80588 Courier New Italic
                        ----------
                            315944; file(s): 4

You can of course just type WDIR and get the information about almost
all the files in the directory. Not all, but nearly all. WDIR looks for
descriptions encoded in files and if there is none, it displays just a
question mark. Besides, there are files that WDIR knows nothing about
their inner structure and therefore ignores them.

WDIR is not an all-knowing type of program. It can recognise the
following types of files:

1. executable programs (EXE)
2. groups (GRP)
3. PIF files (PIF)
4. ATM fonts (PFB)
5. True Type fonts (TTF)
6. HP bitmap fonts (SFP and SFL)

Only six of them? What a misery! Yes, yes. But files ending with VBX,
DLL, FON, FOT, DRV, CPL, ACM, MMH, TSK,... extensions are, deep
down in their hearts, just plain and common EXE (i.e. type # 1) files.

For programs, WDIR displays the identification string; for groups, the
window title; for PIF files, the name of the called DOS application, and
for all the three types of fonts (TTF, PFB, SFP), the font names.

Examples for all file-types:

AAPLAY.DLL 137232 Autodesk Windows Animation Player :>Version 1.02 <:
BP7.GRP 16491 Borland Pascal
DOSPRMPT.PIF 545 COMMAND.COM
TIBI____.PFB 35603 Times Bold Italic
ARLRDBD.TTF 39960 Arial Rounded MT Bold
AC100WFJ.SFP 22790 Swiss Bold
