      INTRODUCING WINCLAVIER

WinClavier is a keyboard translation program that allows you to
input french characters as text into any Windows application.
When WinClavier is installed, its effect propagates throughout
the entire system and all Windows programs like Cardfile, Write,
      Microsoft Word for Windows, etc...

      HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

WinClavier does not require any special hardware besides the
hardware required to run Windows. To run WinClavier, you need
Windows version 3.0 or above. WinClavier will require
approximately 28k of RAM to run, but some of this memory can be
released to the system if it requires it.

      INSTALLING WINCLAVIER

WinClavier comes in two files: WINCLAV.EXE and WCLLIB.DLL. Both
have to be in the current directory or in the path. You run it
once and it is installed. For instructions on how to run it, see
your windows manual. The windows manual shows you how to install
WINCLAV as a member of a program group in the PROGRAM MANAGER.

You may find it handy to have it installed automaticcaly when
Windows loads. To do this, you have to edit you win.ini file,
and add "winclav.exe" at the end of the line labelled "load=".
You will then see the WinClavier Icon on the bottom of your
      screen.

      USING WINCLAVIER

The first time you load WinClavier, you will see the '' in the
Icon. The presence of the accent indicates the WinClavier is
active and your regular keys are remapped to the french-specific
keys. At anytime you can remap your original keys by clicking on
the icon. Then you choose the option "Turn keyboard OFF". If
WinClavier is presently active this option will read "Turn
keyboard ON". A faster alternative to that is by holding the
Ctrl key while pressing the 'k' (Ctrl+k). This is a hotkey
toggle, so that if you press it a second time the french
keyboard will be activated again. You can save the current state
of WinClavier by clicking on the Icon and chosing the item
labeled "Save current state as default". This controls the
initial state on startup (or when Windows is loaded).

The default HotKey toggle for Winclav is Ctrl+K.	If you wish to
change the HotKey, you can select the 'Change Hotkey' options from
Winclav's menu. A dialog box will pop up showing you the current
hotkey and it will prompt you for a new one. If you wish this hotkey
to become the default for you subsequent windows sessions press the
'SAVE' button. If you wish to use your new hotkey for this session
only, press the 'OK' button. If you wish to cancel the operation,
      press the 'Cancel' button.

For users who do not wish to see the WINCLAV icon at the bottom of the
screen, you can select 'Hide Icon' from winclav's menu. Once this has
been done the only way to get the Icon back (so you can close the
program) is to run WINCLAV the same way you did to initially load it.
This does not run another copy of WINCLAV, it merely makes the hidden
window visible again. Hiding the WINCLAV icon will also remove it
from the ALT-TAB window change cycle and it will not appear on TASK
      MANAGER's list box.

Selecting the 'Set Initial Defaults' from the WINCLAV menu will allow
you to configure how WINCLAV is setup each time it is loaded. A dialog
box will pop up when this item is selected allowing you to define whether
or not keyboard translation should be active and if the WINCLAV icon
should be shown when the program is first activated.

The HELP option gives you the mapping of the french keys so that
you don't have to try them out to find the character you are
looking for like we have to do for DOS-based keyboard programs.

Please note that WinClavier will not work for DOS programs even
if they run under Windows. The reason is that Windows and
Windows applications are constantly communicating between
themselves, while DOS programs are totally isolated from each
other and from Windows. Because Windows has to run DOS programs
in a DOS Virtual Machine, and DOS programs do not send messages
the same way Windows programs do,WinClavier is totally isolated
from your DOS programs by Windows.
