WindX Windows file naming and retrieval System
===============================================
Cover Disk Version
==================

WindX is designed to help you find of files for any Windows
application. It does so by integrating with the File|Open and
File|Save As dialog boxes of applications it has 'learned'.
Each time a new file is saved WindX allows you to record a
quick comment (up to 128 characters) to describe the file.

Retrieving a file is simply done by searching for a comment
(or part of a comment) and this can be done from the Application
File|Open dialog box or from the Desktop.

With its unique Learn function WindX can reference any type of
file and launch any Windows 3.1 application. Even DOS
applications can be launched from within Windows if you register
the file with the appropriate DOS application.

This Version
============

This version of WindX is a fully working version except for file
archiving and version control which were removed to save space.
You are also restricted to describing 100 files. To order the
complete product, see the order section below or in the WindX
Help file.

Starting WindX
==============
Double Click on the WindX Icon in the WindX Program Group and
start WindX running (if you have not chosen to put WindX in
the Startup Program Group.)
When WindX is running, click on the WindX Icon to get the System
Menu and select an action. Alternatively double click the icon
to get the WindX button bar. Click the Help (?) button to see
what each button means.

First Time Use
==============
If you have not made the choice to run the Program Locator at
Setup, run the program now (the Program Locator is in the WindX
Program Group) to register all your program files. Then start
WindX. You can begin to register some existing files into its
database either using the Auto-Register option or 'Drag and Drop'
files from File Manager onto the WindX icon. Use the Help
facility to tell you how.

Tip: It is not mandatory to register all your files into WindX
before you start. We suggest that you register existing files as
you need them.

.WDX Files installed

All these Applications have their File|Save As and File|Open
dialogs already learned. This means that WindX will appear
automatically whenever a file is opened or saved. Also a WindX
button will appear on each of these dialogs.

Should you wish to inhibit the automatic behaviour of WindX for
all applications should WindX Options and Click on
"Inhibit Auto-Mode". If you wish to inhibit the automatic behaviour
for one application, simply re-learn the application without
selecting the Automatic Mode.

Some applications will also link to WindX for other functions
(such as File Import and Export). If you do not want WindX to work
with one of these applications, simply delete the appropriate
.WDX file.

Microsoft Products
==================
WindX can capture the information it requires (i.e. File Name, File
Directory and, where applicable, a File Description) from most Windows'
Applications File|Save and File|Open Dialog Boxes. Unfortunately a number
of Microsoft Application Products do not obey the same rules as the others
and WindX cannot capture the File Directory Name from the File|Save As
Dialog Box. This is only a problem with File|Save As because WindX
provides the File|Open Dialog Box with all that it needs.

This problem effects WindX with Excel 3.0 & 5.0, Powerpoint 2.0 and
Works 2.0. Word 2.0 & 6.0 users, however, have a macro included with
this package which solves the problem (see Word for Windows Macro below).

To use WindX with these products, there are three alternative courses of
action. Either:

Register the files concerned for the first time, using "Drag and Drop"
or Auto-Register.

or
Enter the full file name (including the full path) in the WindX File
Register box when saving new files. WindX copies the file name back
to the application and this ensures that WindX has all the information
required to find and launch the file and application from the Desktop.

or
Use the WindX automatic file naming function so that WindX controls
the full file name and path.

Otherwise:
Should you use the WindX functionality solely from within the application
and all the application files are saved in the current directory set by
the application, you could ignore the missing directory information in
the WindX dialog boxes.

Borland Quattro Pro, Picture Publisher, MS Project & Lotus 123
==============================================================
Microsoft Project V1.0, Quattro Pro, Picture Publisher V4.0 and
123 for Windows V3 will not link to WindX at all because they do not use
a recognisable Windows Dialog Box. However this problem does NOT occur
with Lotus 123 Release 4.xx and later versions of MS Project.

Learning Amipro
===============
Amipro has already been 'learned'. However should you wish to re-learn
Amipro please note that Amipro handles the user interface in a slightly
different way. When asked to learn the Application, click the 'Application'
button and move the cross hairs to somewhere within the Amipro document
- not the Application Title Bar - and click again. In this way you make
sure that WindX knows that it is learning Amipro.
(If you choose the Title bar, WindX thinks it is learning a program called
Amiproui.dll.)

Word for Windows Macro
======================
This macro adds more functionality to the normal Word for Windows
FileSaveAs command (used when you choose the Menu Option File|Save As
or press F12) by providing a second Dialog Box from which WindX captures
its information.

In addition to the saved File Name and Directory, this macro captures
information normally found in the "File|Summary Info" Dialog Box,
namely the File Title, Subject and Keywords. This information is
concatenated into a phrase that is copied into the WindX Comment box
when the file is saved (using Save As).

To install the macro, start Word for Windows and open the file
WDXMACRO.DOC. Double click the Install Macro button or use the arrow keys
to select the button, and then press ALT+SHIFT+F9. Remember to save the
changes to the Global Glossary when asked.

The macro can also be un-installed if required.
