.	THE CARTOON THEATER SERIES-1
	(c)1994-Paul G. Huffman
	P.O.Box 202 - Exeter, NH. 03833

The Cartoon Theater is a library of PCX graphics containing
cartoon character head positions, body positions, props,
page layouts and the necessary drawing elements to enable
anyone to use the full potential of any computer paint
program	that reads PCX files to produce professional quality
	cartoons.
	-------------------------------------------------------------
You can send this document directly to the printer with the
	             DOS command: "type read-me>prn"
READ-ME is a six page document explaning how to use this
	                   shareware program.
	-------------------------------------------------------------
This distribution disk contains both the CGA shareware ver 1.0
and VGA shareware ver 1.1 of The Cartoon Theater Series-1.

"TCTS-CGA.EXE" is a self extracting archive file containing
the CGA version and will expand to 26 FILES-168,410 bytes.

"TCTS-VGA.EXE" is a self extracting archive file containing
the VGA version and will expand to 24 files-704,164 bytes.

	************************************************************
Due to the simple fact that the file names contained in each
	of these programs are identicle...
	------------------------------------------------------------
DO NOT EXPAND THESE PROGRAM FILES INTO THE SAME DIRECTORY!
	------------------------------------------------------------
...........if you do, the program file expanded secondly will
over-write some of the files you've previously expanded......
	...so be careful!
	************************************************************

...................it is entirely up to the user as to where to
store this library of files. It is suggested that you make a
subdirectory under the directory that contains the paint program
you will use to manipulate these files.

For example; If you have a paint program under a directory such
as C:\PBRUSH. You may wish to store these files in that directory
      under a subdirectory called THEATER...to do this;

      1. At the DOS prompt C:\> type md\pbrush\theater (enter).
      2. At the DOS prompt C:\> type cd\pbrush\theater (enter).
      3. Place your program disk in your floppy disk drive and close
	the floppy disk drive latch.
      4. At the DOS prompt C:\PBRUSH\THEATER> type copy a:*.* (enter).
      5. At the DOS prompt C:\PBRUSH\THEATER>	type TCTS-CGA
                               - OR -
At the DOS prompt C:\PBRUSH\THEATER> type TCTS-VGA
(depending on which version you are using).
      6. At the CONTINUE EXTRACTION? prompt, type Y (enter)
      7. After all the files have been extracted you can delete the
	READ-ME and TCTS-CGA or TCTS-VGA.EXE files
to free up additional disk space.

				Page 1.

.	You may also copy these programs to a floppy disk if you
wished to keep this library of files aside from your hard disk
files or because you have no hard disk.
TO DO THIS...USING THE CGA VERSION.

      1. Put your shareware disk in your floppy a drive and close the
         drive latch.
      2. Put a blank formatted 360k DS/DD in your floppy b drive and
         close the drive latch.
      3. At the DOS prompt enter the command>
         copy a:tcts-cga.exe b: (enter)
      4. Change to the B drive by entering the command> B: (enter)
      5. At the B:\> prompt enter the command> tcts-cga (enter)
      6. Under the self-promo for "THE CARTOON THEATER SERIES-1"
you will see the question> Continue Extraction?
      7. Type y (then push enter).
      8. All of the programs 27 files will expand onto your floppy
         disk in drive b:
      9. You can now use these files with any CGA pc paint program
that reads and writes PCX files.
      -------------------------------------------------------------
TO DO THIS....USING THE VGA VERSION
....You must have one 5 1/4" 360k ds/dd floppy disk drive
      ....and... one 5 1/4" 1.2mb ds/hd floppy disk drive or a
      3.5" 1.44mb mini disk drive.

      1. Follow the exact proceedures as above by substituting the
proper drive letters for the source and target disks.
      2. In step 5 above type> tcts-vga (enter).
      3. This file will expand into 24 files-704,164 bytes.
      4. You can now use these files with any VGA pc paint program
that reads and writes PCX files.

... Of coarse your drive letter and directory name may differ
but the basic format remains the same. The basic idea is that it
is best to store these files out of the way in their own
      subdirectory.
Be sure to make backup copies of your original Cartoon Theater
disk and set your original Cartoon Theater disk aside for safe
keeping. If you are unfamiliar with how to make back up copies
of your original disks, please refer to your Dos manual.
			------------------------

The general idea behind the concept of The Cartoon Theater
is that to draw with a computer paint program by using a mouse
is about as comfortable as trying to draw on a piece of confetti
with a crowbar. There are a million good PC paintbrush and
drawing programs with very powerful features but they never seem
to give you a library of files that the average person can use
to have full control over putting together a good little drawing
or cartoon on a greeting card, a calandar page or the like. We
are not all professional artists and that is what the overall
concept of the Cartoon Theater is all about.

				Page 2.

.	How the overall concept of THE CARTOON THEATER will unfold.

Series-1 features a block style newspaper cartoon format.
Series-2 will feature a more complicated, story book form
                  of cartooning.
Series-3 will feature a very complex library of files to
enable the average person to construct a very
                  detailed, fine-line work of illustration.

The Cartoon Theater Series-1 is scheduled for release on 1/1/94.
The Cartoon Theater Series-2 is scheduled for release on 6/1/94.
The Cartoon Theater Series-3 is scheduled for release on 1/1/95.

HOW TO USE THE CARTOON THEATER...

A cartoonist is a producer, director and playwright all rolled
into one. The cartoonist sets the stage, designs the costumes and
scenery, chooses the cast of characters, writes the script and
produces the finished work. The Cartoon Theater provides literally
hundreds of separate drawing elements to help make this all
possible. Only four head positions are shown for each character.
You can flip the 3/4 and side views of the character's head
positions to instantly achieve two more head positions for each
of the characters. Be sure to pay close attention to the direction
and size of the collar to match your chosen head position. You
could use a collar pointing in the opposite direction to achieve
a " looking over the shoulder" effect.
Likewise, you can manipulate any of the separate drawing elements
in this way, such as body positions, props, etc. The page layouts
included with The Cartoon Theater offer the user with even more
      versatility.

				Page 3.

.	The file WORKPAGE.PCX is a blank page for you to draw on.
This was included to avoid confusion as you construct your
      finished master piece...........................FOR EXAMPLE!
Let's say you wanted to draw a single panel cartoon for a
newspaper, or a magazine or just to pin-up on your wall or
      refrigerator.
      TO DO THIS...

	1. Start your favorite pc paintbrush program you will be
            using THE CARTOON THEATER with.
	2. Open a head or body or prop file and begin bringing
seperate drawing elements together on the workpage.
         3. every time you bring a new element onto the workpage
keep resaving the workpage until you have completed a
            whole idea.
         4. Using the cut and paste utilities of your paint program,
cut the image from the workpage and paste it onto
PG-1-PNL.PCX which is a layout for a single panel cartoon
for a newspaper, magazine or just to hang on the wall.
Give your new cartoon feature a title, a caption below and
type in your initials behind the copywrite (c).
	5. Now save this new cartoon with a new filename.
         6. You can do the same thing with the calendar page layout,
it is the file entitled PG-CAL.PCX or SIGN-1.PCX.
	7. After you have saved your new creation go back to your
WORKPAGE and erase any left over images (if any) and
resave your WORKPAGE as a blank page.
.................................THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT!

In the registered version there are page layouts for 3-panel,
4-panel cartoons, a mock newspaper front page, a greeting card,
      and so much more.

.	Due to the many variations of printer configurations involved,
it is the responsibility of the individual user to achieve the
desired result when sending work to the printer. When using
the page layouts take note of the following tips....
       1. All files created in CGA mode were originally created in
640 x 200 CGA screen size (except for the PG-CAL.PCX
          which is 640 x 400 ).
...All files created in VGA mode were originally created in
640 x 480 VGA screen size (except for PG-CAL.PCX which
          is 768 x 996 ).
....If using Windows 3.1 Paintbrush for printing these
full page layouts, access the page setup menu and set your
          margins...TOP MAGIN=0.125" "ALL OTHER MARGINS=0.00"
      ---------------------------------------------------------------

All my years as a free-lance commercial artist and cartoonist
I have never found a program developed enough to fulfill these
needs for the common amature, so I made one myself. I hope you
will have as much fun playing with this program as I had
creating it. Feel free to use it to develope your own style,
technique and library of files of your own creations.
