INSTALLATION TIPS FOR MESSAGEWORKS
==================================

STAND-ALONE PCs
---------------

When installing MessageWorks on a stand-alone PC, the installation is very
straightforward. The message data files are stored in the same directory
as the MessageWorks program files. Since message recipients will not be
able to view their messages on their PC, you will probably want to use the
print feature and deliver the phone messages to the recipients periodically.
All the other conveniences of storing the messages on the computer (simplified
entry, archiving of messages, and search capabilities) are available.

NETWORKED PCs
-------------

When installing MessageWorks for use on a network, both the network server
and each workstation must be configured properly. After installing the
MessageWorks software, your network administrator must take some steps
before MessageWorks can be used.

NOTE: You can install the MessageWorks executable files on the server, and
cause all workstations to run the copy of the program that is on the server.
You still need to run the setup program on each workstation, but specify the
redirected network drive and path (see below) for the installation path.
Select Full installation for the first installation, and Configure
Workstation Only for all subsequent installations.

If you ever upgrade to a newer version of MessageWorks, simply run the
installation program from one workstation (when noone is running the old
version), and all workstations will be upgraded!

Server Setup
------------

1. Identify a network file server that will store all messages. All persons
who desire to send and receive messages to or from each other must be able
   to connect to this server.

2. Create a directory on this server for the messages (e.g. \\MSGWORKS).

3. Give all MessageWorks users read/write access to this directory.

Workstation Setup
-----------------

After the network server has been properly setup, each user must take the
following steps before running MessageWorks for the first time:

1. Redirect a local drive to the MessageWorks server. The command to do this
can vary depending on the type of network you are using. It can be done
at the DOS prompt or from the Windows File Manager.

For example, suppose your company uses an MS-LAN Manager network and a
MessageWorks data directory called \MSGWORKS has been created on the
\\PEACH server. Determine a drive that is not local to your machine
(usually A:, B:, and C:) and has not been redirected to another server.
For this example, we assume drive D: is unused. To redirect drive D: to
   the MessageWorks data directory, type:

       NET USE D: \\PEACH\MSGWORKS

2. Either place the redirection statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (after the
network logon statement) so the connection is established each time you
logon, or if your network has a feature for remembering the connection
and can reestablish it automatically each time you logon, use this feature.

3. The first time you run MessageWorks, a dialog box will be displayed
stating that the path is invalid or empty. Enter the redirected drive
name (D:\ in this example). If all the network connections were properly
setup, MessageWorks will run and you are ready to go!

The first time a user runs MessageWorks, their name is automatically added
to the list of callee names in the MessageWorks database and their messages
will be properly routed to their workstation. No administration of addresses
is required.

Testing
-------

To verify that the messages are indeed being sent across the network,
take a message for another MessageWorks user. If MessageWorks is running
on their PC, they should receive notification of the message within 5 to
10 minutes. Or, to force MessageWorks to poll immediately for new messages,
go to File Preferences and click on OK.

When MessagesWorks finds one or more new messages, it plays the sound associated
with the Windows "Exclamation" event (look in the Control Panel Sound function
to see what sound it is set to). If the window is maximized, the main window
title changes to something like "John Doe - 1 Message" and the title bar
blinks; if minimized, the icon title changes and the icon begins blinking.

If you have already setup your system and are still having problems

1. Make sure you are logged onto the network.

2. Make sure the server is "up".

3. Go through the workstation setup again to confirm the connections are setup
   properly.
