1.      Introduction

1.1 DataSafe Version 1.0.0 is a fast and extremely reliable data encryption program. It has been designed to offer the greatest protection with the minimum of effort required from the user.

1.2 It can be used to encrypt all types of files, be they word processor, database, spreadsheet or program.

2.      Conventions

2.1 Bold is used for program names i.e. DataSafe.

2.2 [] is used for user interaction i.e. [Do This]. Do not type the brackets.

2.3 <> is used for keys to be pressed i.e. <RETURN>. Do not type the brackets.

3.      Installation

3.1 DataSafe is best installed on a hard disk but will function from the supplied floppy disk.

3.2 It consist of the following files, each of which is necessary to run the program.

DataSafe.exe    -       The main program.
esoteric.ini - Used by all esoteric programs to set up control data. May be blank or contain information about esoteric programs.
esoteric.msg - This contains standard information used by all esoteric programs and is a method of reducing the required disk space on users systems.
DataSafe.pif - This allows DataSafe to run under Microsoft Windows it may be customised by the user, and is not necessary for purely DOS usage.
install.bat - Used to install the programs to a hard disk and is not required after installation.

3.3 To install the programs to a hard disk, [insert the floppy diskette into the floppy drive]. Change to the floppy drive by typing [a:] or [b:] and pressing <RETURN>. Type [install] and press <RETURN>, the install script will then use the built in d
efaults, these are to copy files to c:\esoteric. If an alternative drive and directory is required, type [install] followed by the new details i.e. [d:\utils] or [d:\esoteric] and press <RETURN>. The full drive and path must be entered.

3.4 If using the floppy diskette to run the program, a backup should be made and this used. The master copy should be housed securely.

4.      Operation

4.1 All that is necessary to encrypt a file is to type DataSafe followed by the name of the file to encrypt and the chosen password e.g.

[DataSafe filename.ext password] <RETURN>

4.2 The filename may either be the full drive and path name or the home directory filename i.e. c:\docs\filename.ext or filename.ext.

4.3 The password may be any combination of keyboard characters up to 256 in length. The same password is used to decrypt the file and must therefore be remembered. Using the wrong password will terminate the decryption process immediately.

4.4 DataSafe will use the same path and filename for the encrypted file but append the extension .enc to indicate an encrypted file. It is therefore imperative that the original file does not use the extension .enc.

4.5 Decryption uses the same procedure but recognises the .enc file extension and will decrypt this. The output from decryption is placed in a file with .dec appended.

4.6 It is strongly recommended that the file extensions .enc and .dec are reserved for DataSafe, to avoid any possible loss of data through conflict.

4.7 The use of the 'S' option will display the statistics for the relevant encryption or decryption, once the option has been completed.

4.8 The use of 'I' as an option is restricted for use on files bearing the .dec extension, as it will display the encryption method.

4.9 It is possible via use of the 'Q' option to suppress the graphically display. This is useful for occasions when it is not beneficial to know that encryption/decryption is taking place. It also has the added advantage of being considerably quicker,
 as use of the 'S' option will demonstrate.

5.      Assistance

5.1 If [DataSafe] <RETURN> is entered a help screen will be displayed as below.

DataSafe Version 1.0.0
Filename.ext Password
->      Filename.ext to encode as Filename.ENC
->      Filename.ENC to decode as Filename.DEC
-> Encoding and Decoding require the same Password
Options : [-/]
->      [hH] = Help <no load>
->      [iI] = Show file encryption details <No Load>
->      [qQ] = No display during coding <Quiet Mode>
-> [sS] = Show statistics after coding
->      [rR] = Registration Procedure <No Load>
->      [vV] = Version details <No Load>

5.2 If options are missing or DataSafe cannot function correctly, the following appropriate message(s) will be displayed at the bottom of the help screen.

	->> Filename Missing <<-
	->> Password Missing <<-
	->> Wrong Password   <<-
