How to use FTP (from a machine on the Internet)
::::::::::::::

From a UNIX system, type "ftp <site>" where <site> is the FTP site you wish
to use. When prompted for a username, type "anonymous". When asked for a
password, type in your e-mail address (this will not echo back!).

Once connected, use "cd" to change directories, "dir" to look at a list of
files and directories, and "get" to transfer files to your local computer.
"get <filename> |more" will display the file directly to your screen and
page through it with the program "more". "quit" will close your connection
and quit FTP.

Here's an example:

> ftp ftp.hmc.edu

Drug Questions? Just in the mood for browsing?

Hundreds of file are stored at hemp.uwec.edu, and you can
use FTP or gopher to get to them. Don't know how to use
FTP and don't have a gopher client? No problem; keep reading.

There are better ways to access information than ftp. I realized that
only computer geeks (like me) know ftp like the back of their hand, so I
made most of this information available via gopher. If you have a
gopher client on your machine, then just type: GOPHER HEMP.UWEC.EDU
to check it out.

Next I realized that not everyone has a gopher client, so I set up
mine to be used by anyone. To use it, simply telnet to HEMP.UWEC.EDU,
and login as gopher; no password required. Here is an example:

        $ telnet hemp.uwec.edu
        Trying... Connected to HEMP.UWEC.EDU.

        ULTRIX V4.3 (Rev. 44) (hemp.uwec.edu)

        login: gopher
        Last login: Mon Mar 7 18:25:38 from ...

When viewing a document from gopher, press return, until you reach the
end. At that time, you have the option to mail a copy to yourself.
(please do not use the download or print features as the files will
stored on my system, not yours.

If you have problems, let me know. I want everyone to have access.
(not just us computer geeks :')

I would be happy to include anything you think might be valuable to
the net.surfers, and I also want to hear your complaints.
(please no complaints about my spelling)
