APPENDIX E -- THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS

          UTILITY PROGRAMS REQUIRED OR SUPPORTED

           Extended File Copy Function

WinNAV uses the following external MS-DOS/PC-DOS utility program
for its extended copy and backup functions.

These standard DOS applications are invoked by WinNAV launch of
the indicated PIF file. It should be noted that WinNAV looks for
the *.EXE or *.COM file extension when it attempts to load any
internally defined standard DOS applications; however, Windows
will first attempt to load the appropriate *.PIF file.

          Supported Versions User Created
          Application Tested PIF File
          Programs With To Be Named

          XCOPY.EXE 3.21 XCOPY.PIF

           Pack/Unpack File Compression Utilities

WinNAV supports the following external file compression utilities
through its Pack/Unpack menu and dialog options.

Each of these are standard DOS applications that are invoked by
WinNAV's launch of their respective PIF files. It should be
noted that WinNAV looks for the *.EXE or *.COM file extension
rather than the *.PIF extension when it attempts to load any
internally defined standard DOS applications; however, Windows
will first attempt to load the appropriate *.PIF file.

          * Note: LHA.EXE should be renamed to LHARC.EXE. Although WinNAV
could invoke LHA.EXE through the use of an LHARC.PIF
file, CVT will only invoke LHARC.EXE.

           Convert File Utilities (optional)

In addition to the foregoing, the convert (CVT.COM) utility
options also will require the following utilities to fully sup-
port all listed file compression formats; however, these addi-
tional utilities are only used by the CVT.COM and CVT!.COM
application programs, and may be omitted if conversion of the
indicated formats are not required by the user.

Each of these are standard DOS applications that are invoked by
WinNAV's launch of their respective PIF files. It should be
noted that WinNAV looks for the *.PIF file extension rather than
the *.EXE or *.COM extension when it attempts to load any inter-
          nally defined standard DOS applications.

           Virus Scan Utility (optional)

The convert utility options also will require the following util-
ity to invoke the virus scan option; this utility is used by both
WINNAV.EXE and the CVT.COM and CVT!.COM application programs, and
may be omitted if the user does not wish to invoke any virus scan
          options.

          ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS AND UTILITIES

Although the following applications are not required nor inter-
nally defined by WinNAV, they can be used to fully exploit its
Launch and View Panels' capabilities. They are comprised of many
of the most popular and widely distributed public domain and
shareware DOS and Windows applications that are available today.

These applications are just a sampling of the utilities that can
be invoked by WinNAV, and should not be considered to be a recom-
mendation or endorsement, nor should it be considered as an all
inclusive list of available public domain and shareware
applications suitable for use by any particular user.

Each of the standard DOS applications, indicated by an asterisk
("*") next to its name, should be loaded by WinNAV's Launch or
View functions invocation of their respective PIF files; gener-
ally, the file name of the PIF file should be the same as that of
the executable program. The Windows applications do not require
PIF files, and may be invoked by directly calling the applica-
tion's file name and *.EXE extension.

          Programs Tested Application or Utility
          ---------- --------- -----------------------

LIST.COM * 7.1a This is perhaps the oldest and most
used of any the PC/DOS file view
utilities; it lists any file in text
or binary format, and provides exten-
                                      sive options, filters, search and
                                      other facilities too numerous to
                                      describe. It is directly supported
by WinNAV, for viewing files within
archives, due to its support of text
                                      and binary files.

DBB.EXE * 1.2 DataBase Browser an excellent and
relatively new list utility that dis-

                                     Appendix E-4

                                      plays formatted fields and records
stored in the dBase *.DBF file
                                      format.

WP5LOOK.EXE * 1.0 Another excellent list utility that
                                      displays WordPerfect formatted docu-
ment files, and provides its own
                                      internal search capabilities.

BROWSER.EXE 3.0 and 3.2 A Windows list utility that provides
fine search, filter, format and other
capabilities -- its only draw back is
that it cannot load large files as
the entire file is held in memory.

GCP.EXE 4.20SW An excellent Windows graphic viewer,
(f/k/a (also 4.10) manipulation and file conversion
EASEL.EXE) utility, which supports Windows Paint
(Old and New MSP), Bitmap, Cursor and
                                      Icon, MacPaint and Mac Startup
Screens, GIF, PC Paintbrush (PCX) and
                                      HP Laser (PCL) file formats.

WINPRINT.EXE 1.32 An excellent Windows print formatter
that allows text files to be printed
                                      with headers, selected fonts, margins
                                      and other user specified settings.

          FILEVIEW.EXE 1.00 An excellent Windows file view/list
utility that allows viewing files of
                                      unlimited length.

HOW TO OBTAIN APPLICATIONS AND UTILITIES

Many of the foregoing are shareware as well as public domain
applications. These applications, like Windows Navigator, may be
obtained from such sources as local bulletin board systems
(BBS's), friends, clubs and user groups, and even mail order pub-
lic domain distributions -- one such software library is men-
          tioned earlier in this manual.

In addition, some of these are distributed (as disk space per-
mits), to registered users of WinNAV when they purchase a disk

                                     Appendix E-5

set; they are included free of charge, together with any
original on-disk documentation and other information, distributed
          with WinNAV's registered user disk.

Note, however, that shareware authors expect or at least hope to
get paid for their investment of time and labor in the develop-
ment of a particular application; "payment" generally means
direct payment to the author, and not to any third party or
          distributor.

When you register WinNAV, you have not paid for or obtained any
license to use any of the third-party applications which might be
contained on the disk set; these utilities change from time to
time, and are merely provided as a convenient way for you to
sample additional applications that are made available through
          their respective authors.

Should any of these utilities be of use to you and wish to con-
tinue to use them, then you must comply with the license terms
and conditions and the registration instructions that are
included with each individual application. Furthermore, these
utilities are distributed "AS IS" and without any warranty what-
soever. Also note that while it is hoped that the utilities on
the whole represent the most current versions presently being
distributed by the author, more current versions may be available
          through other sources.

Hopefully, from time to time, other shareware authors and regis-
tered users of WinNAV, will pass on copies of WinNAV's demo pro-
gram (not the registered copy please) to others, or will forward
new versions of their own utilities, viewers or other shareware
and public domain applications to us for review. If they are
found to be compatible with or otherwise complement the use of
WinNAV, we in turn, will attempt to make them available to our
own registered users for their review.
