How to Build a Boot Diskette
=============================================================================


This document provides a procedure to create an emergency boot diskette.
A boot diskette is a floppy diskette that can be used to start your
computer in an emergency.

The procedure is divided into two parts: Required and Optional. The
Required procedure has the minimum steps necessary to create a diskette
that can start your computer. The Optional procedure contains additional
steps to create a boot diskette that will allow you to diagnosis and
fix problems with your system. Following both the Required and Optional
procedures is recommended.

You will need 1 diskette and 1 label.


Build Boot Diskette - Required
==============================

     [ ]    1.    If you are using a new diskette, then skip this step.
                  Confirm all files on the diskette are not required. Use
                  the file manager or the following command at the DOS 
                  prompt to view an inventory of files on the diskette:

                             DIR  A:\*.* /S /P

                  If you are not using drive A:, substitute your drive 
                  letter in all commands listed in this procedure and
                  the Optional procedure below.

     [ ]    2.    If you are using a new diskette, then skip this step.
                  Copy files you wish to keep to a different floppy disk or
                  to a hard disk. Use your file manager or DOS commands 
                  at the DOS prompt.
 
     [ ]    3.    Build a system diskette using the file manager or
                  using the following command at the DOS prompt:

                            FORMAT A: /S

     [ ]    4.    Copy the C:\COMMAND.COM file to A:\COMMAND.COM. Use
                  the file manager or the following command at the
                  DOS prompt:

                         COPY C:\COMMAND.COM  A:\COMMAND.COM /V

                  Replace C: in the above command with the default boot
                  drive letter if it is different with than C:
               
     [ ]    5.    Create the diskette label and paste it on the diskette.
                  Suggested label: 
                 
                        "Emergency Boot Diskette - Created MM/DD/YYYY".

                   Notes: (1)Depending on the DOS version on your system,
                             some of the files may not be included.
                          (2)Additional files may be copied to the 
                             diskette as well.

      [ ]    3.    Copy the help files listed below to drive A.     
                   These files are located in your default DOS directory.

      [ ]    4.    Copy the DOS configuration files listed below to drive A:
                   These files are located in the root directory of your
                   default boot drive.

                        CONFIG.SYS     DOS startup configuration file

                    Note: These files are automatically archived to the
                          Software Manager VAULT\CFGSAVE directory 
                          by the Install and Uninstall functions.

      [ ]    5.     Copy the Windows configuration files listed below to
                    drive A. These files are located in your default
                    Windows directory.

                        *.GRP          Program Manager group info. files
                        REG.DAT        Windows Registration Database


                    Note: These files are automatically archived to the
                          Software Manager VAULT\CFGSAVE directory 
                          by the Install and Uninstall functions.   

     [ ]     6.     Copy the PCSoft procedure document listed below to
                    drive A: This file is located in the main Software
                    Manager directory.

                        File           Description

                        RCVRPRO.TXT    Recovery procedure to be used if
                                       system can not be started after
                                       installing or uninstalling software.
